Kelly Cartwright attended
the University of Life or as many space cadets like to call it, the school
of hard knocks. Kelly grew up with his mother and father on a ranch in
Joshua Tree, California before a divorce resulted in a relocation to Las
Vegas, Nevada. There his mother worked as a show girl on one of the strips
more higher profile venues. Kelly met his father again when he was sixteen
after he returned from a stint in a penal institution. His father was a
manipulative and physically violent man. Following a barrage of assaults
by both parties Kelly left the home and went to fend for himself in the
big bad world. After an extended period of travel he ended back up on a
ranch in Southern California. The money was poor but Kelly was at least
out of the home. Life out on the Ranch was tough and it hardened Kelly
physically and mentally but eventually the poor wages lead Kelly out of
the countryside and into the big city of San Francisco.
Kelly never had any real ambition for Starfleet or for life in general.
He was happy to move from one job to the next, taking life slow and easy.
By the age of eighteen Kelly was at a crossroads. He had no job and very
little money. Life on his lonesome wasn't as attractive as it had been
at first. The obvious thing to do was to enroll in the Academy. He surprisingly
passed his entrance exams but struggled academically throughout his four
years there. When he graduated he was finally glad to be rid of the burden.
He decided to take a break immediately afterwards. The Academy had opened
his eyes to new species, races and cultures. He enlisted in the merchant
navy and was given an attractive salary and a rotation schedule which allowed
him to travel to all ends of the galaxy. He spend many years piloting a
variety of ships to exotic locations. Not all of which he liked or ever
plans on returning to. He dealt with many species he would never have dreamed
of and made many strange friends in the process.
Returning home after two years in the Delta quadrant Kelly gave his notice
and bought a ranch near Joshua Tree with his small new fortune. After a
further 12 months there he got bored with life on the ranch. Rumours of
wars and battles afar and the destruction of Starfleet Academy by the Breen
lead him to finally start his commission with Starfleet.
Cartwright did not take to authority or those who commanded it very well.
It lead him to much trouble on his first commission and after two years
of mixed emotions he was promoted and reassigned to the USS Hardy Eustace.
There he used his experience on the merchant navy in the role of helmsman.
He enjoyed his experience there as the ship was involved in many major
Starfleet operations. After a year he decided to progress his career on
another vessel.
Kelly was transferred to the USS Galaxy in 2381. |

| Cartwright is a moody
and arrogant man but despite this he remains very approachable and likable
due to his rugged looks and casual sense of humour. He loathes authority
and power trips. He has no hesitation in putting people in their place
regardless of the consequences. He is honest and devoted when it suits
him. |

| Wears a stetson on his
head when off duty and is never seen wearing anything but leather and suede
off duty. He is quite partial to heavy drinking, gambling and a bit of
rough stuff between the sheets. |
