Iana received a reprimand after an incident with a fellow science officer, Henry Tuck, who developed a split personality and attacked several crew members with a toxin. Because of her Vulcan abilities, she was asked to use a mind meld to retrieve information from Henry Tuck. Under orders to not cause any harm to Tuck, Iana abused her ability to 'rewire' Tuck's mental state to correct the problem. Despite the end being 'good,' the means were not justified and under violation of moral code and Captain's orders. She was demoted to Ensign and suspended from duty until ethics training was completed.

2358: Iana Auryn Et`Kal was born to Delona Et`Kal. Delona had relations with Jovant, a Vulcan, while on Risa. She had no interest in pursuing their relationship further so Iana was born without knowing her father. 2361: Like most Betazoid children, Delona sent her daughter to school to learn about the arts at a young age. Iana excelled early on in painting and other fine arts. 2368: During middle school, Iana struggled in many of the telepathy developing courses. Her skill was much weaker as it began to develop since it took more of a Vulcan nature, contact telepathy; however, it didn't stop her from doing the best she could in her courses. She still started to build the Betazoid gift for counseling and other psychology studies. 2369: Delona Et`Kal died of a terminal illness that doctors were unable to cure since it had been detected in its final stages. Not wanting her daughter to have no family and to go into foster care, she contacted Jovant on Vulcan to let him know he had a daughter and that he would need to raise her. After the death of her mother, a devastated Iana was abruptly taken to Vulcan by her father. This had an impact on Iana's usually compliant and calm nature. The sudden change in society added to the lose made her more withdrawn. 2370: "High school" is easy for nobody and Iana had a particularly difficult time adjusting. She was not fully trained as a Vulcan and was not entirely Vulcan in customs, knowledge of history, and so forth. Because she didn't like to fail and didn't want to disrespect her mother's memory,Iana did her best to learn Vulcan traditions. This gave her a sense of appreciate of history and culture; however, she didn't full embrace being a Vulcan either. During her first year, she met a small group of 'half breed' students who didn't also entirely fit the mold of being Vulcan or necessarily embrace it. Many had a Terran mother or father. This helped her cope more with the change. 2374: At 16, Iana was accepted into Star Fleet Academy. She had started schooling early as part of Betazoid tradition so her age is slightly younger. Despite troubles in high school, she had graduated in the top 5% of her class. Falling back to her Betazoid roots, she decided to go into Counseling as her career choice. Having many interests, she studied electives and post-course activities in piloting. This is where she met Vaughn, a Vulcan, who was studying to be a helmsman. He had progressive Vulcan ideas which surpassed Vulcan tradition which made them click instantly. They began to date seriously despite Vaughn being 40 years her senior. 2376: Iana and Vaughn marry in a traditional Vulcan ceremony on Vulcan during break from the Academy: which was surprising given that neither usually practiced tradition. Vaughn graduates from the Academy and is assigned to the USS Pandora-C. 2378: Iana graduates in the top 10 of the counseling school. She is assigned to the USS Phantom-A as an Ensign and Junior Counselor. Two months into her tour of duty, she is informed that Vaughn was killed in a conflict on a recently launched exploration expedition of his ship. Two days prior, she was informed that she was surprisingly pregnant. Devastated, Iana took a month off from her work before coming back to the job (probably too soon.) Feeling she wasn't prepared to be a suitable parent and afraid of putting her child through the Star Fleet life,Iana made the decision to give her child up for adoption. 2378 - Aja is born on the Phantom. Taking a detour to Vulcan, Iana gave her child to Vaughn's sister and her husband to raise. Feeling the Phantom left her with too many bad memories, she was granted a transfer to the USS Horizon-A to restart her life. She was also promoted to Lt. Junior Grade because she would be the lead Counselor. It was a small ship that patrolled the borders of the Alpha Quadrant which needed crew members who had several fields of knowledge. 2380 - While the Horizon was on a Risa retreat, Iana and fellow crew mate Michael Moriarty married on Risa after a year of dating. For both, it was a rebound maneuver and seen generally careless by most around. Despite her personal behavior, Iana's professional behavior was exemplary. Moriarty began to teach Iana tactical work while in their off time on the ship. 2382 - The Horizon came under fire while investigating reports of attacks on freighter vessels but unmarked ships. The attacked happened while ships passing near an asteroid field on the edge of Federation territory. The attack was so hard and so fast that many of the senior officers on the bridge were heavily wounded or killed in one hit after sensors were disrupted by something in the asteroid field. Passing off her wounds and relying on her extra skills learned,Iana took the helm and being the highest ranked officer on the bridge took over while communications were being reestablished with the rest of the ship. The Horizon was able to escape the rest of the attack by hiding in the Asteroid field and manage to dock at the closest station. Iana received commendations in her record for her valour in battle. 2382 - Near the end of the year, a new science Ensign, Henry Tuck, that she was counseling started suffering from space sickness and began developing alternate personalities due to the stress of being on the ship for so long. Iana , with the Captain's permission, restricted him from duty and tried to work with him before he had to be confined to his quarters. Ensign Tuck's darker side did not like that possibility and quickly acted out in his craziness and infected several crew members with a virus that he created. Being the only one with the cure and with time running out, Captain Daniels ordered Iana to retrieve the information from Ensign Tuck with a mind meld. He also gave her the strict orders not to tamper with anything else in Tuck's mind including the split personality even if it was an easy solution. While in Ensign Tuck's mind performing the forced mind meld,Iana saw ideas and thoughts that led her to disobey the captain's direct orders. Feeling it was for the greater good, she violated many ethical codes and restructured part of Tuck's mind to 'fix' him and it worked. Tuck came out of his space sickness and she also retained the cure for the ill crew members. Infuriated with her disobeying a direct order and her disregard for the 'well being' of a patient,Iana received a demotion back to Ensign, mandatory ethics training, and reprimand on her record. 2383 - When the Horizon re-docked at Star base 242, Iana was transferred off of the Horizon to the Galaxy. She also received notice of divorce from her husband, Moriarty. |

Two worlds collide creating a very complex woman. Raised by her mother in the world of Betazoid tradition, she respects cultures, arts, nature, and can be nurturing. She learned to have the Betazoid zest for life and whims of fancy. Abruptly taken from that and thrown into a world of logic, she did her best to learn Vulcan tradition as it suited her. Iana can be a typical Betazoid or Vulcan when she wants to be, but always pushes things to that edge after years of rebelling against her father as a teenager. Because both Vulcan and Betazoid cultures encourage truth, Iana rarely lies. With a high sense of duty and working towards the greater good, Iana is very hard to break under pressure. |
||
Iana carries features of both races but leans more towards Vulcan in physical characteristics. She has the typical thick, dark Betazoid hair and dark eyes. Vulcan characteristics she retains: pointed ears, blood, longevity, lung capacity, inner eyelid, sense of smell, and strength. Other notable characteristics include a tattoo on her left ankle that includes traditional Vulcan art and one on her right that includes typical Betazoid art.
