The Last of the Echani's story began on her homeworld.
Located on the verge of Federation space, the Echani star seemed as it was bright, enabling life to expand towards three of its twelve surrounding worlds. The Echani themselves had reached beyond the heavens through recent advancements in spacefaring technology, and over time established several colonies on these worlds. Their scientific endeavours led to the discovery that over thirty-eight percent of their solar-system was comprised of dilithium deposits, and that they were not alone in the universe. A member of the United Federation of Planets had established a concealed presence nearly two decades ago in order to refine the dilithium for their own necessities. When their operation was detected by ships of the Echani Defense Force in the year 2376, they forced the Federation Council to neglect the Prime Directive and establish direct relations with the Echani Government. For the promise of assisted cultural development, the Echani granted the Federation access to three of their major dilithium deposits. Two years later a single member of the Echani Defense Force was extended an invitation join Starfleet in an effort to enhance diplomatic relations. A young intelligence officer by the name of Rayne Sutea was selected for that program. After having adapted to her new surroundings on Earth, Rayne entered the academy program with the intent of excelling. By all consideration she had been the first of her kind to ever leave Echani space, and she considered it a proud honor. Her first year at the academy went surprisingly well. She received impressive remarks from her instructors, and was well liked by other cadets. Her second year began with an immeasurable loss however, one that would forever echo in mourning. She learned of the incident during a holovid alongside many of those she had befriended. One of the Echani's largest dilithium moons had suddenly erupted. The shockwave was powerful enough that it essentially scorched every trace of life from the system, leaving behind fractures in the space/time continuum. The entire system was placed under strict quarantine as to prevent further loss of life. In a single night she had become the last of her kind. With no place left to go, Rayne endured as best she could. Nevertheless, her grades during her second year deteriorated towards the possibility of expulsion. Transferring to the SFMC during her third year was a decision she made despite great opposition from her instructors, fellow cadets, as well as unexpected visitors. There, she became more dangerous and reckless than ever before. As if determined to mark the last cry of the Echani in battle, it took a defining interdiction to quell her self-destructive motivations. Days later, the woman known as Rayne simply faded from existence, becoming "The Last of the Echani". While effectively assuming the identity of her entire species, psychological evaluations concluded that this her way to deal with it. Echani managed to rebuild most of her shattered life and graduate two years later. She was then assigned to the USS Galaxy. |

Echani has come far in a short time. Once considered to be adept, perceptive, and yet even playful by her peers, She is slowly returning to her old traits. There is a sense of solace within this young woman, but she still has a long way to go from completely recovering over the loss of her people.
The Echani race possess a natural, yet intense telepathic ability which is exercised through direct physical contact. It causes a exchange of personality and experience, which can be controlled to a degree through proper instruction and readiness. For this reason, such physical contact has been regarded with great intimacy. The Echani wore gloves in order to avoid inadvertent subconscious contact with other living beings, as the last of their kind continues to do.
