Support Craft

The USS Galaxy maintains a significant number of smaller support craft designed specifically for the use of personnel for short-range transport, reconnaissance, covert operations, short-term scientific exploration and cargo transportation. The Galaxy-Class starship currently maintains 5 shuttle bays - 1 main, 4 auxiliary. The current complement of support craft aboard the Galaxy is as follows:

Shuttles
2 Type-9 Personnel Shuttles
6 Type 14 Cargo Shuttles
2 Type-10 Shuttlepods
6 Type-11 Personnel Shuttles

Runabouts
2 Danube Class Runabouts
2 Mustang - Class Assault Runabouts

The details on each class of support craft is as follows:

Runabouts

Danube-Class Runabout (Commissioned in 2365)

The Danube-Class Runabout is one of the more common runabouts used by Starfleet for multi-purpose functions: transport of cargo modules and personnel on short-range trips, small-scale scientific expeditions and tactical reconnaisance, as well as the more covert transport of intelligence/tactical personnel.

The front cabin is designed to accomodate four persons comfortably, two of which are the pilot and operations officer, with the other two seats being used to accomodate any accompanying officers, although the runabout is capable of carrying a maximum of 40 people for emergency purposes.

Specifications:

Armament

6 x Type IV Phaser Arrays
2 x Standard Mini-Photon Torpedo tube (24 Microtorpedoes)

Runabout Velocities
Normal Cruise : Warp Factor 4
Maximum Cruise : Warp Factor 5
Maximum Rated : Warp Factor 5.2 for twelve hours

Dimensions
Length : 23.1 m
Beam : 13.7 m
Height : 5.4 m
Decks : 1

Mustang-Class Runabout (Commissioned in 2375)

The Mustang Runabout is designed to serve a more tactically-based role than the multi-purpose Danube-Class runabout. Even given this consideration, the Mustang is in itself equivalent in armament to the Danube, but has stronger hull plating and a more cohesive structural integrity field.

The forward compartment of the runabout is the same as in the Danube-class, since the runabout is designed to effectively fly with a single pilot, one navigation officer and capable of carrying an additional two officers, like the Danube. However, the ship is also designed to transport either 20 marines or tactical officers for ground-based combat operations, or can serve to carry a maximum of 20 medical patients (under which circumstances the two additional officers in the forward compartment are likely to be medical personnel). Like the Danube, the maximum capacity in the event of an emergency is 40 personnel in total.

Specifications:

Armament

1 Fore, 1 Rear Microtorpedo Launcher
6 x Type IV phaser arrays

Runabout Velocities

Normal Cruise: Warp Factor 4
Maximum Cruise: Warp Factor 5
Maximum Rated: Warp Factor 5.2 (12 hours)

Dimensions

Length: 23.1 meters
Beam (Width): 13.7 meters
Height: 5.4 meters
Decks: 1

Shuttle Craft

Type-9 Personnel Shuttle (Commissionedn 2370)

The Type-9 shuttlecraft is Starfleet's premier support craft of it's size capable of transporting up to 4 personnel, including the pilot and operations officer, on long distance missions (for reconnaisance, scientific exploration and courier missions) in comfort. Each craft is named by the captain of the vessel to which the shuttles themselves are assigned.

Although not heavily armed, the Type9s are capable of a faster standard cruising speed than the Runabouts, and consequently are more likely to be used for long-distance missions.

Specifications:

Armament

2 x Type IV Phaser Arrays
1 x Type IV Phaser Emitter
2 x Standard Micro-Torpedo Tubes (60 Torpedoes)

Shuttle Velocities

Normal Cruise : Warp Factor 5
Maximum Cruise : Warp Factor 5.4
Maximum Rated : Warp Factor 5.8 for three hours

Dimensions

Length : 9.17 m
Beam : 3.8 m
Height : 2.95 m
Decks : 1

Type-14 Cargo Shuttle

The Type-14 is designed exclusively for the transport of cargo and freight on ship-to-ship and ship-to-ground assignments. The shuttle is designed for a maximum of two crew, the pilot and operations officer. It also possesses a small transporter system located between the main cockpit and cargo bay. The maximum capable velocity of the shuttle is Warp Factor 5.

Specifications:

Dimensions

length: 14.6 meters
width: 3.3 meters
height: 4.5 meters

Type-10 Shuttle Pods (Commissioned in 2370)

The Type-10 was the first shuttle designed based along lines of the Defiant-Class starships, utilising warp nacelles and engines of a similar (albeit smaller) design of that class of ships. Due to the incorporation of a more efficient warp coil, the shuttles are capable of reaching far faster warp velocities than the majority of other shuttles currently used aboard Starfleet vessels, and thus serves most effectively when used as a courier ship in the field, since it can convey messages and personnel between ships and facilities in deep space far quicker than other shuttlecraft.

The shuttle is capable of carrying 4 crewmembers, including the pilot and operations officer, but it is not big enough to maintain a very effective evacuation capacity, and thus is rarely ever used in emergency situations where other craft are available for such duties.

Specifications:

Armament

2 x Type IV Phaser Arrays
2 x Type IV Phaser Emitters
2 x Standard Micro-Torpedo Tubes (60 Torpedoes)

Shuttle Velocities

Normal Cruise : Warp Factor 5.5
Maximum Cruise : Warp Factor 5.8
Maximum Rated : Warp Factor 6.5 for three hours

Dimensions

Length : 9.64 m
Beam : 5.82 m
Height : 3.35 m
Decks : 1

Type-11 Personnel Shuttles (Commissioned in 2372)

The Type-11 Personnel Shuttle was originally designed by Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E based on a Starfleet Initiative to allow starships to design and build their own support craft to suit the purposes of the ship and the missions to which it is assigned. She is one of the fastest ships in both size and class, able to attain a maximum warp velocity of Warp Factor 7. However, she is also less heavily armed than the majority of other ships in her class.

With regards to personnel, the shuttle can carry 2 command crew: pilot and operations officer, along with 10 passengers, and thus can be used for science missions, fast personnel transport or covert operations.

Armament

3 x Type IV Phaser Arrays
2 x Standard Micro-Torpedo Tubes (60 Torpedoes)

Shuttle Velocities

Normal Cruise : Warp Factor 6
Maximum Cruise : Warp Factor 6.6
Maximum Rated : Warp Factor 7 for three hours

Dimensions

Length : 14.64 m
Beam : 3.26 m
Height : 4.5 m
Decks : 1
