Medical
Sciences Database - Conditions and Ailments |
|||
There are many common ailments in the Star Trek Universe. Any new diseases, conditions, and/or ailments must be cleared by the Chief Medical Officer if they are potentially contagious to the crew and/or would have an effect on the Galaxy's plotlines.
Conditions and Ailments
Altarian Encephalitis | A retro-virus that incorporates its DNA directly into the cells of its host, lying dormant up to many years before becoming active and subjecting the host to a coma and delirium for days. This inactivity erases through synapse degradation all memory back to the point of infection -- according to the future scenario the alien Barash constructed with Commander Riker. Apparently Klingons are immune to this infection ("Future Imperfect" [TNG]).
Amnesia | Loss of memory, whether permanent or temporary.
Anchilles Fever | Deadly disease capable of spreading
rapidly in a planetary population and causing widespread and painful deaths
in the millions. The disease struck Styris IV in 2364 ("Code of Honor" [TNG]). |
||
Andronesian Encephalitis | A highly contagious airborne disease, yet safely treated in Sickbay thanks to a superior air filtration system. The threat of this disease caused the guardian of the Daled IV Dauphin to request the destruction of the individual infected ("The Dauphin" [TNG]).
Aphasia | Dysfunction of certain brain centers affecting the ability to communicate in a coherent manner. Different forms of aphasia exist, but the type that afflicted the members of Deep Space 9 in 2369 caused an inability of the brain to process audio and visual stimuli, making the victims incapable of understanding other or expressing themselves coherently ("Babel" [DS9]).
Aphasia Virus | Virus created by Bajoran scientist
Dekon Elig, intended to be used as a terrorist weapon against the Cardassians.
The disease organism would have been delivered through an aphasia device
planted in a food replicator by the Bajoran underground. Once contracted,
the virus would find its way to temporal lobes and disrupt normal communication
processes, causing a type of aphasia. As the virus spread, it attacked the
autonomic nervous system, causing a coma, then death.
The aphasia virus was accidentally unleashed on Deep Space 9 in 2369, ironically after the Cardassians had abandoned the station ("Babel" [DS9]). |
||
Arethian Flu | Illness which Lieutenant Hargrove was tested for on the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656, stardate 48579 ("The Hunted").
Arteriosclerosis | A pathological condition in some humanoid species characterized by the hardening of the arteries and accompanied by the deposit of fat in the inner arterial walls. Joseph Sisko developed progressive atherosclerosis, eventually necessitating that he be given a new aorta ("Homefront" [DS9]).
Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome | A syndrome where intron release causes a de-evolution within a patient's DNA. This virus exhibited airborne transmission and worked by invading the host's DNA and activating introns. The virus is caused by the invasion of genetic codes by synthetic T-cells, and was named for Lieutenant (j.g.) Reginald Barclay of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D in 2370 as its progenitor ("Genesis" [TNG]).
Balt'masor Syndrome | Klingon exobiologist J'Ddan suffered from Balt'masor Syndrome. He required regular treatments, given by injection, for the condition ("The Drumhead" [TNG]).
Bendii Syndrome | A rare usually fatal disease that
afflicts Vulcans over the age of 200, debilitating their emotional control;
there is no known treatment. Early symptoms include sudden bursts of emotion,
especially irrational anger, but the only way to prove a diagnosis is to grow a culture from tissue of the metathalamus -- a process which takes several days. The telepathic abilities of Vulcans are strong enough to cause the loss of control to be projected onto others. Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan died of it on stardate 45245, in 2368 ("Sarek"; "Unification, Part 1" [TNG]). |
||
Biomimetic Fluctuation | Medical reading in Founders that are indicative of dangerous instability of the morphogenic matrix ("The Begotten" [DS9]).
Blight, the | The name given by the natives of the Teplan system to the disease that they were infected with by the Jem'Hadar as an example to all who defied the Dominion. Everyone there is born with it. In the asymptomatic stage, the victim has blue lesions on the face and body, which turn red with the onset of the terminal stage, known as Quickening; death soon follows. A cure has been created, however, in 2372 by Julian Bashir. The cure is only bittersweet, though. It does not help the current generation of sufferers, but stops the disease from being passed to their newborns ("The Quickening" [DS9]).
Blood Parasites, Distillate |
To put Federation negotiator Mendoza out of commission during the Barzan wormhole bargaining in 2366, the Ferengi used a distillate of their own daimon's blood parasites to wreak a serious allergic reaction. Dr. Arridor took a sample of the yellowish Ferengi blood from Daimon Goss' neck, then rubbed the distillate into his daimon's palm -- where it turned deep blue-green -- to make contact in a handshake ("The Price" [TNG]).
Cartalian fever | Bashir mentions this deadly virus while Jake was thinking that an outbreak of this virus would be just the thing to liven up his article on the doctor. Can reach plague proportions ("Nor the Battle to the Strong" [DS9]).
Cholera | Acute infectious enteritis, common on Earth in the 19th and 20th centuries, caused by the organism Vibrio cholerae. A cholera epidemic in late 19th-century San Francisco was used as a cover for a group of time travelers from Devidia II. The Devidians used the disease to conceal their murder of many humans so that they could steal their neural energy as food ("Time's Arrow, Part 1&2" [TNG]).
Claustrophobia | Morbid fear of enclosed or confined spaces. Elim Garak suffered from an acute case of claustrophobia ("By Inferno's Light" [DS9]).
Cold, Common | An infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by any of over 200 viruses in many humanoid species. By the 24th century, the common cold was a curable ailment ("The Battle" [TNG]).
Coleibric Hemorrhage | A fatal condition in Cardassian physiology. It was the cause of death of the infamous Gul Darhe'el, who died in 2363 ("Duet" [DS9]).
Correllium Fever | Correllium fever broke out on planet Nahmi IV in 2366 ("Hollow Pursuits" [TNG]).
Cytotoxic Shock | Prostration of bodily function caused
by high levels of cytotoxins. Cytotoxic shock in humanoid patients can be treated with inaprovaline ("Nothing Human" [VOY]). |
||
Darnay's Disease |
A deadly ailment that attacks the brain and nervous system of its victims. Dr. Ira Graves died of Darnay's disease in 2365 ("The Schizoid Man" [TNG]).
Denevan Neural Parasites | Origin unknown, an irregularly shaped gelatinous life-form analogous in structure to an oversized brain cell. The entire population of these parasites were somehow linked together to form a collective intelligence. In their young form, the parasites were mobile, capable of flight. They would latch themselves onto a humanoid life-form, infiltrating the humanoid nervous system, gaining control of both autonomic and higher functions, and inflicting severe pain on the victim. These parasites were so virulent that they were capable of infesting an entire planet's population, at which point they would reach across interstellar distances to another planet. The neural parasites appeared to have come from outside the Milky Way Galaxy, attacking the ancient Beta Portolan system, then infesting Levinius V, Theta Cygni XII, Ingraham B, and, in 2267, planet Deneva. Among the parasites' victims at Deneva were Aurelan and George Samuel Kirk, brother and sister-in-law to Captain James Kirk. Also infested was Science Officer Spock, although he was freed by exposure to intense light, an experiment that provided the means to destroy the remaining parasites on Deneva. The actual eradication was accomplished by placing 210 satellites in orbit around Deneva, bombarding the surface with powerful ultraviolet radiation. ("Operation- Annihilate!" [TOS]).
Depressurization | In a depressurized environment, consciousness lasts 15 seconds followed by 10 seconds of disorientation followed by unconsciousness.
Dermal Dysplasia | Medical skin disorder caused by an overexposure of the epidermis to hazardous levels of thermal and ultraviolet radiation. ("Future's End, Part I" [VOY]).
Dorek Syndrome | A very rare and incurable disease that afflicts one out of every five million Ferengi. In 2372, Dr. Orpax misdiagnosed Quark with Dorek syndrome during Quark's annual insurance physical. ("Body Parts" [DS9]).
Dissociation | A psychological condition symptomatic of mild schizophrenia of split personality.
Enantiodromia | Psychological term that literally means conversion into the opposite. Vico survivor Timothy was diagnosed as suffering from enantiodromia following the death of his parents in 2368. ("Hero Worship" [TNG]).
Eosinophilia | Medical condition. An abnormally high count of serum eosinophils, a type of white blood cell in humanoids. ("The Host" [TNG]).
Forrester -Trent Syndrome | Degenerative neurological disorder. It is very rare, but if left untreated, can result in paralysis and even death. The syndrome is usually hereditary but can be activated by a random mutation. A neurostabilization regimen can stabilize or reverse the disease. Jason Vigo was diagnosed as having Forrester-Trent in 2370, caused when Bok secretly resequenced Vigo's DNA to make him appear to be Picard's genetic progeny. ("Bloodlines" [TNG]).
Fostossa virus | Fostossa virus was epidemic on Bajor during the Cardassian occupation, killing thousands of Bajorans. A cure for the disease was developed by Dr. Crell Moset, but only after extensive experimentation on Bajoran prisoners, resulting in the painful death of many of those unwilling subjects ("Nothing Human" [VOY]).
Genetic Virus | Deadly biological weapon. ("Blood Oath" [DS9]).
Hemocythemia | Medical condition in which intercellular pressures are unstable. This condition was also called hemocythemic imbalance and could be treated with osmotic pressure therapy. ("Deadlock" [VOY]).
Hesperan Thumping Cough | A flu-like affliction. Wesley Crusher noted that the effects of a virus he contracted on Quazulu VIII were worse than Hesperan thumping cough. ("Angel One" [TNG]).
Histamic Reaction | Federation negotiator Mendoza suffers a system-wide histaminic reaction -- massive, body-weakening allergies -- after being infected by DaiMon Goss via a distillation of the Ferengi's own blood pyrasites; one early symptom seen is fever, leading to dizziness and weakness. It is not serious, but knocks Mendoza out of the negotiations for the rights to the Barzan wormhole for several days ("The Price" [TNG]).
Holodiction | Contraction for holodeck addiction. A psychological condition where an individual becomes so caught up in holographic simulations that the real world becomes unimportant. Reginald Barclay suffered this affliction when first assigned to the Enterprise - D in 2366. ("Hollow Pursuits" [TNG]).
HTDS | Holotransference Dementia Syndrome. Medical condition in which a person becomes so disoriented within a holographic simulation that they lose their sense of identity and start to think that they are part of the program. ("Projections" [VOY]).
Hyper-REM | Abnormal neurological condition during sleep. In 2374, the crew of Voyager experienced a prolonged and agitated period of deep hyper-REM sleep initiated by a dream species ("Waking Moments" [VOY])
Hyperacceleration | Biochemical condition that plagued the people of planet Scalos due to radiation permeating their water supply. Hyperacceleration of biological processes caused an individual so affected to experience one second as if it were an entire hour. Outsiders who were accelerated quickly burned out, dying in a very short period of time due to cell damage. To a normal, nonaccelerated person, a Scalosian sounded very much like an insect. ("Wink of an Eye" [TOS]).
Hypochondria | Condition which causes the sufferer to imagine they have various other medical conditions.
Hysterical Amnesia | A mental safety valve to block the memory of something too painful to remember.
Intron virus | An intron virus that causes humanoids and other animals to develop structural and behavioral characteristics of earlier evolutionary forms. Accidentally developed in 2370 when a routine synthetic T-cell treatment became mutated. The virus exhibited airborne transmission and worked by invading the host's DNA and activating introns. Discovered by Dr. Beverly Crusher of the U.S.S. Enterprise -D, named for Reginald Barclay, the first patient known to have contracted the virus. ("Genesis" [TNG]). Also known as Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome. |
||
Iresine Syndrome | A very rare neurological disorder in humanoids characterized by a peculiar electropathic signature in the thalamus, and a severely decreased histamine count. Victims of the disorder, first identified in the 23rd century, would fall suddenly into a coma for approximately 72 hours. Diagnosis could be confused by the presense of any of 22 different substances that left electropathic residue resembling that of this disorder. Iresine Syndrome was suspected of inducing comas that befell three members of the Enterprise -D crew in 2368, but was later ruled out when it was learned they were victims of telepathic memory invasion rape. ("Violations" [TNG]).
Irumodic Syndrome | Degenerative disorder that causes progressive deterioration of the synaptic pathways. The disease can cause senility and eventually death. Treatment of choice for the disorder was peridaxon, though this was simply palliative; no cure existed. (In the anti-time future created by the Q Continuum, Picard suffered from this disorder.) ("All Good Things..." [TNG]).
Iverson's Disease | A chronic disease that causes fatal degeneration of muscular functions in humans. Iverson's disease does not, however, impair mental functions. There is no known cure for the condition. Admiral Mark Jameson suffered from Iverson's disease, although he eventually died from other causes. ("Too Short a Season" [TNG]).
Kalla-Nohra Syndrome | Chronic pulmonary disease. Kalla-Nohra Syndrome is found only in individuals exposed to a mining accident at Gallitep, a labor camp run by the Cardassians during the occupation. There are no known instances of anyone not involved with that mining accident contracting the disease, so a positive diagnosis makes it virtually certain that an individual has been at that infamous death camp. Cardassian citizen Aamin Marritza was diagnosed with Kalla-Nohra at Deep Space 9 in 2369, and was subsequently suspected of having been Gallitep commander Gul Darhe'el. ("Duet" [DS9]).
Lacunar Amnesia | Type of amnesia that occurs when a patient witnesses an act of violence so terrible that the patient rejects the reality of the situation. Dr. McCoy's preliminary diagnosis included lacunar amnesia when assessing the lack of grief shown by the children of the Starnes Expedition on planet Triacus for the death of their parents in 2268. ("And the Children Shall Lead" [TOS]).
Larosian Virus | Mild disorder. Dr. Julian Bashir feared that Jadzia Dax might have contracted Larosian virus on stardate 46853. In truth, a replica of Dax, created by unknown aliens from the Gamma Quadrant, was responsible for Dax's unexpectedly amorous behavior toward Bashir. ("If Wishes Were Horses" [DS9]).
Levodian Flu | Viral disease. Levodian flu normally lasts 29 hours. Symptoms include sneezing and a runny nose. The U.S.S. Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram once programmed himself with a holographic simulation of the Levodian flu. He hoped that the experience would help him better relate to organic patients. ("Tattoo" [VOY]).
Lobar Pneumonia | A disease from which Elias Sandoval suffered as a child ("This Side of Paradise" [TOS])
Macrovirus | Life-form probably indigenous to a planet in the Delta Quadrant, resembling a conventional virus, but growing to extraordinary size. The macrovirus begins its life cycle at a submicroscopic size, but quickly grows, infecting its host body as it multiplies. When it reaches approximately one centimeter in size, the macrovirus emerges from the host, where it can grow as large as two meters. The Tak Tak civilization had serious problems with macrovirus infestations, and adopted a policy of destroying any infected colony or ship. Although Tak Tak medical technology had no effective treatment for the macrovirus, the Emergency Medical Hologram aboard the Starship Voyager was able to develop an antigen that could destroy the macrovirus. ("Macrocosm" [VOY]).
Memory Virus | Parasitic organism that thrived on the peptides generated by its host's brain. The virus, discovered in 2373 by Voyager scientists, was able to evade the body's immune system by disguising itself as an engram. The parasite would create a false memory for its host that was so traumatic that the host's mind would repress it. The memory virus would live, in person after person, hiding in a part of the brain that the unconscious mind would want to avoid at all costs. When it sensed the death of its host, the virus would leave to find another. Thoron radiation was lethal to the memory virus. Victims of the memory virus included Dmitri Valtane and Tuvok. ("Flashback" [VGR]).
Mendakan Pox | Humanoid disease characterized by skin mottling. Harry Kim had a case of Mendakan pox in 2358. ("Favorite Son" [VOY]).
Metremia | Radiation poisoning caused by the metreon cascade. Metremia, a fatal degenerative blood disease, was caused by exposure to high concentrations of metreon isotopes. The disease attacked its victims on a molecular level, causing the body's atomic structure to undergo fission. ("Jetrel" [VOY]).
Microvirus | A genetically-engineered microorganism designed to attack only cells with a specific DNA sequence. One such organism was designed to attach itself to parasympathetic nerves and to block the function of the enzyme cholinesterase, thus blocking autonomic nerve impulses, but only of specific individuals. Yuta of the Acamarian clan Tralesta used such a microvirus as a weapon to systematically murder nearly all members of the rival clan Lornak, including Penthor-Mul and Volnoth. ("The Vengeance Factor" [TNG]).
Morphogenic Virus | A virus engineered by Star Fleet Intelligence ("Section 31") with the intent of killing the Founders. The primary symptom is a decreasing ability to shapeshift, accompanied by pain and peeling skin; the progress is accelerated by frequent shapeshifting and in the final stage of the disease, the Changeling cannot revert back to liquid state and will die in solid form. The cure for the disease contains a nucleotide marking sequence consisting of adanine, asporadine, lytastolanine, and radanine ("The Begotten" [DS9]).
Neural Depletion | Complete loss of electrochemical energy of a humanoid brain, resulting in the death of the victim. Neural depletion was characteristic of the victims attacked by aliens from Devidia II. ("Time's Arrow, Part II" [TNG]).
Neural Metaphasic Shock | A potentially fatal failure of the neurological system in humanoids. Neural metaphasic shock was the cause of death of a crash victim from the U.S.S. Denver after Dr. Toby Russell treated him with borathium, an unauthorized drug. ("Ethics" [TNG]).
Neurochemical Imbalance | A serious physiological condition in Vulcans, the effect of the Pon farr mating drive. Even Ensign Vorik's brief physical contact with B'Elanna Torres on stardate 50537.2 caused her to experience a potentially fatal neurochemical imbalance, the result of a Vulcan telepathic mating bond. ("Blood Fever" [VOY]).
Neuroleptic Shock | Form of neurological disturbance in which cortical functions of the brain's synaptic pathways are disrupted. This could result in a state similar to a coma, but without the usual biochemical markers. ("Sacred Ground" [VOY]).
Nihiliphobia | The fear of nothingness. Neelix suffered from nihiliphobia when Voyager traveled through the profound emptiness of the region of space informally known as the Void in early 2375. Symptoms of nihiliphobia can include anxiety and even panic attacks leading to collapse ("Night" [VOY]).
Nitrogen Narcosis | Also known as "rapture of the deep," nitrogen narcosis was a hazard of 20th-century-Earth deep-sea diving. It was caused by the replacement of oxygen in oxyhemoglobin with nitrogen. In its victims, the resultant anoxia produced disorientation, hallucinations, and lack of judgment. The phenomenon is similar to temporal narcosis. ("Timescape" [TNG]).
Omega 10 Virus | An airborne virus native to Omega 10, it dehydrates the human body, reducing it to a crystalline form. The planet itself provides immunity, and enough time spent on the planet will lead to the death of the virus ("The Omega Glory" [TOS]).
Orkett's Disease | Viral sickness. Orkett's disease swept through the Bajoran work camps during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, killing thousands of children. ("State of Flux" [VOY]).
Parinisti Measles | Endoplasmic virus. Six Voyager crew members suffered from Parinisti measles on stardate 48693. Fortunately, the Emergency Medical Hologram was able to produce a vaccine that prevented the disease from becoming epidemic. ("Heroes and Demons" [VOY]).
Phage | In biology, a virus that infects bacteria by attaching a hollow protein tail to a bacteria cell wall, injecting DNA into the cell. Sometimes called a bacteriophage. Phage was also the name of a deadly virus that attacked members of the Vidiian people in the Delta Quadrant. The phage consumed the Vidiians' bodies, destroying their genetic codes and cellular structures. There was no known cure for the phage, and the Vidiians survived as a species only by making extensive use of organ transplantation. ("Phage" [VGR]). One of the symptoms of the early stages of the phage is excruciating joint pain. Some who are infected have been known to die from the agony itself. Klingon physiology was resistant to the phage, and Vidiian scientist Sulan believed that Klingon genetic material extracted from B'Elanna Torres would eventually lead to a cure for the disease. ("Faces" [VOY]).
Phyrox Plague | The population of planet Cor Caroli
V suffered an outbreak of Phyrox plague in 2366. The epidemic was contained
with assistance from Enterprise - D personnel. Starfleet Command classified
the incident as secret. ("Allegiance" [TNG]). |
||
Plasma Plague | A group of deadly virus types. An unclassified but extremely virulent strain of plasma plague threatened the densely populated Rachelis system in 2365. Significant research into plasma plague was conducted by Dr. Susan Nuress in 2295 in response to a similar outbreak on planet Obi VI. One mutated strain developed during Nuress's research was found to grow more rapidly when exposed to eichner radiation. A similar strain threatened the Enterprise -D when that ship was transporting specimens of plasma plague to Science Station Tango Sierra to combat an outbreak in the Rachelis system in 2365. ("The Child" [TNG]).
Polycythemia | Medical condition characterized by an abnormal increase in the number of red blood cells. ("Basics, Part I" [VGR]). SEE: xenopolycythemia.
Pottrik Syndrome | Disease that afflicts Cardassians, similar to Kalla-Nohra Syndrome. So alike are the two afflictions that they are even treated by the same medication. Aamin Marritza claimed to suffer from Pottrik Syndrome, in an apparent attempt to conceal the fact that he suffered from Kalla-Nohra. A lower pulmonary bio-probe for Pottrik Syndrome shows up as negative, whereas for Kalla-Nohra, it shows up as positive. ("Duet" [DS9]).
Progeria | A rare genetic disorder which causes Humanoid children to age extremely fast. It was eradicated by medical science around 2374 ("Scientific Method" [VOY]).
Psi 2000 virus | A water-based disease organism originally found on planet Psi 2000 in 2266. This virus infected members of the Federation science team stationed on that planet, causing suppression of their inhibitions, and ultimately their deaths. Transmitted through human perspiration, the virus later infected members of the Enterprise crew, resulting in the near-destruction of the starship when infected crew member Kevin Riley disabled the ship's engines while it was in orbit around the disintegrating planet. ("The Naked Time" [TOS]). A variant of this virus infected members of the U.S.S. Tsiolkovsky crew as well as the crew of the Enterprise -D in 2364. ("The Naked Now" [TNG]).
Psychotropic Addiction | An addiction perpetuated by an effect directly on brain cells ("The Game" [TNG]).
Retrovirus | Member of a family of viruses, Retroviridae, which reproduce by using a host cell to reproduce DNA, rather than the RNA which most viruses produce. In order to combat an outbreak of Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome aboard the Enterprise - D in 2370, Data used the amniotic fluid of Nurse Ogawa's pregnancy as a template for a retrovirus. This retrovirus, once activated, rewrote the DNA of the mutated T-cell, which caused the symptoms of the syndrome to abate. ("Genesis" [TNG]). While this retrovirus was a good one, most of them are associated with cancers, mostly in animals. There is also some research linking a retrovirus with AIDS. The Taresians engineered a retrovirus that they placed on several planets in the Delta Quadrant. The retrovirus would alter the DNA of a male host's body, making it Taresian. The retrovirus also imparted an instinctive urge to return to Taresia, where the male would be killed by denucleation. ("Favorite Son" [VOY]).
Rigelian Fever | Deadly disease resembling bubonic plague. An outbreak of Rigelian fever threatened the Enterprise crew in 2269, necessitating that a landing party beam down to planetoid Holberg 917G in search of the antidote, ryetalyn. ("Requiem for Methuselah" [TOS]).
Rigelian Kassaba Fever | Disease. As a ruse to regain control of the Enterprise in 2268 when it was commandeered by the Kelvans, Dr. McCoy claimed that Spock suffered from Rigelian Kassaba fever and required treatment with stokaline injections. ("By Any Other Name" [TOS]).
rop'ngor | Disease that sometimes affects Klingon children, somewhat akin to terrestrial measles. As an adult, Worf came down with a case of rop'ngor in 2365, much to his embarrassment. Sensitive to Worf's feelings, Dr. Katherine Pulaski made up an excuse for him: that he had been engaged in ritual Klingon fasting and thus was not at peak physical condition. ("Up the Long Ladder" [TNG]).
Rudellian Brain Fever | Type of illness. Miles O'Brien feared his wife had been stricken with Rudellian brain fever upon returning from planet Bajor in 2373. ("The Assignment" [DS9]).
Rudellian Plague | Disease. The Cardassian colony on planet Pentath III was afflicted by Rudellian plague in 2372. ("Rules of Engagement" [DS9]).
Rugalan Fever | Deadly disease. Audrid Dax's daughter, Neema, spent two weeks in the hospital with Rugalan fever over two hundred years ago. ("Nor the Battle to the Strong" [DS9]).
Rushton infection | Disease. A Rushton infection killed Jeremy Aster's father in 2361. ("The Bonding" [TNG]).
Sakuro's Disease | An extremely rare disease that can cause intense fever, weakness, and death if not treated. Commissioner Nancy Hedford contracted Sakuro's disease in 2267, preventing her from serving as mediator in a dispute on planet Epsilon Canaris III. ("Metamorphosis" [TOS]).
Somatophysical Failure | In humanoid physiology, the collapse of all bodily systems. Captain Picard suffered massive somatophysical failure when he was physically separated from the emanations of the Kataan probe in 2368. ("The Inner Light" [TNG]).
Strain No. 9 | Doctor Susan Noress and a four-member research team to fight a plasma plague 70 years ago in the Oby system. A sample of the plague for use in combating a plague in the Rachelis system begins growing en route, stimulated by Eichner radiation, and threatens its containment model and the bio-health of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D that ferries it.
Streptacochlial-bola-spongiform-diadinate (Zintels Disease) | Sneezing, Shortness of breath, Red-Blue-Green spots, Blurring vision, Hallucinations, Increased aggression, illogical activity, Loss of motor control, Paranoia and Delusions of Grandeur. The Virus eats away at the body, traveling along the nervous system and blod vessels.The body is unable to fight off the infection and normal antidotes are in-effective. Placing the patient in stasis has little or no discernable effects. It attacks only bodies with certain "T"cells common to all species. Incubation period is between 2 -8 days then the first symptoms appear. In later stages the patient has weeping sores that expand, this can take anything from a few days to three weeks to occur. In the final stage the victim displays remarkable logic and clear thoughts almost tripling their intelligence. This stage lasts no more than forty minutes before the patient convulses and dies. The body then disintegrates to a mushy pulp and after twenty minutes leaves no traces. |
||
Stockholm Syndrome | In psychology, the tendency for hostages to sympathize with their captors after extended captivity. Dr. Crusher believed that Jeremiah Rossa might have exhibited Stockholm Syndrome after spending years with Talarian Captain Endar. ("Suddenly Human" [TNG]).
Symbalene Blood Burn | Virulent disease. Symbalene blood burn can kill an entire planetary population in a very short period of time. Nevertheless, the destruction of the Malurian civilization in 2267, caused by Nomad, was even more rapid than a plague of Symbalene blood burn. ("The Changeling" [TOS]).
Synthococcus Novae | Dangerous bacillus-strain organism, a by-product of modern technology. Although treatable, the deadly bacillus was regarded as a significant health hazard. Dr. Sevrin was a carrier of the disease but immune to it, passing it on to others yet remaining symptom-free. ("The Way to Eden" [TOS]).
Tahiti Syndrome | Twentieth-century term for a human longing for a peaceful, idyllic natural setting when suffering from the stresses of modern life. McCoy noted Kirk's reaction upon observing the ancient Native American lifestyle on Miramanee's planet, commenting that overpressured leader types like starship captains often exhibited the Tahiti Syndrome. ("The Paradise Syndrome" [TOS]).
Telurian Plague | A terrible disease that was still incurable in the 2360s. ("A Matter of Time" [TNG]).
Temporal Narcosis | Delirium produced by exposure to a temporal distortion phenomenon. ("Timescape" [TNG]).
Terellian Death Syndrome | Disease whose symptoms include dizziness,
blurred vision, palpitations, and stinging in the lower spine. The condition
causes cellular decay, which can be reversed if caught early enough. In
2370, Reginald Barclay diagnosed himself as suffering from Terellian Death
Syndrome. Fortunately, he was wrong. ("Genesis" [TNG]). |
||
Terrellian Plague | Dangerously virulent disease. (In the anti-time reality created by the Q Continuum, during 2395 there was an outbreak of Terrellian plague on Romulus. The Klingons allowed Federation medical ships to cross the border, and the U.S.S. Pasteur used this outbreak as an excuse to enter the Neutral Zone.) ("All Good Things..." [TNG].)
Thelusian Flu | An exotic but harmless rhinovirus. The first officer of the U.S.S. Lantree was treated for Thelusian flu two days before that ship made contact with the Darwin Genetic Research Station on planet Gagarin IV in 2365, but Dr. Pulaski ruled out the virus's having anything to do with the hyperaccelerated aging experienced by the Lantree crew after that contact. ("Unnatural Selection" [TNG]).
Transporter psychosis | Rare medical disorder caused by a breakdown of neurochemical molecules during transport. Transporter psychosis was first diagnosed in 2209 by researchers on planet Delinia II. The condition affected the body's motor functions, as well as autonomic systems and higher brain functions. Victims were found to suffer from paranoid delusions, multi-infarct dementia, tactile and visual hallucinations, and psychogenic hysteria. Peripheral symptions included sleeplessness, accelerated heart rate, myopia, muscular spasms, and dehydration. The problem was eliminated around 2319 with the development of the multiplex pattern buffer. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, suffering from acute fear of transporting, believed he might have been experiencing transporter psychosis. ("Realm of Fear" [TNG]).
Vegan Choriomeningitis | Rare and deadly disease. James Kirk almost died of Vegan choriomeningitis in his youth. The disease remained dormant in his bloodstream and in 2268 was used by people of planet Gideon to infect volunteers willing to die to solve their overpopulation crisis. Symptoms include high fever, pain in the extremities, delirium, and death if not treated within 24 hours. ("The Mark of Gideon" [TOS]).
Xenopolycythemia | Disease in humanoids characterized by an abnormal proliferation of red blood cells causing varied symptoms including weakness, fatigue, enlarged spleen, and pain in the extremities. Dr. Leonard McCoy was diagnosed with terminal xenopolycythemia in 2268. He was cured, thanks to advanced medical information from the spaceship Yonada. Prior to that time, xenopolycythemia was considered to be invariably fatal. ("For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" [TOS]).
Zanthi Fever | Viral condition that affects the
empathic abilities of mature Betazoids. A patient suffering from Zanthi
fever can involuntarily project emotions onto others. Lwaxana Troi contracted
