Procedures | |||
Accelerated Critical Neural Pathway Formation | Medical procedure that uses genetic re-coding to alter the brain of a humanoid patient. Although it was banned in the Federation, physicians on Adigeon Prime used the technique to enhance the brain of Julian Bashir when he was almost seven years old. The procedure is illegal under laws dating back to the end of the Eugenics Wars. ("Doctor Bashir, I Presume?" [DS9])
Angosian Alteration | Used by the Angosians to turn normal men into 'killing machines'. The process alters cell structure using substances as cryptobiolin, triclenidyl and macrospentol ("The Hunted" [TNG]).
Amniotic Scan | Sensor readings of the fluid contained within the amniotic sac of a mammalian pregnancy. Such a scan can provide a wealth of information about the fetus, including its sex ("Genesis" [TNG]).
Aortal Graft | A procedure which patches a defect or wound in the Aorta on a humanoid.
ARA Scan | Autonomic Response Analysis, a medical scan used to determine the truthfulness of a subject patient. ("Ex Post Facto" [VOY],"Projections" [VOY],"Basics" [VOY]).

Blood Screening | Medical test used by Federation personnel to identify shape-shifters. This was considered necessary because of the possibility that shape-shifting Founders had taken humanoid form and infiltrated the Federation and other Alpha Quadrant powers. The test involved removing a small sample of blood from an individual's body. If the individual was a changeling, the blood would revert to a gelatinous orange liquid. Captain Sisko ordered blood screenings on Gul Dukat and the Detapa Council members after rescuing them from the Klingons in 2372. ("The Way of the Warrior" [DS9]). Blood screenings, along with phaser sweeps were employed as security measures on Earth in 2372 shortly after the bombing of the Antwerp Conference by a changeling. ("Homefront" [DS9]). In 2373, the Klingon Empire became obsessive about doing blood screenings to prevent infiltration of the empire by Founders. ("Apocalypse Rising" [DS9]).
Brain-circuitry Pattern | Medical diagnostic image mapping neural activity in a humanoid brain. The BCP of each individual is unique, and thus serves as a positive means of identification. Mira Romaine was given a BCP diagnostic exam in 2269 during the battle with the Zetarians. The test revealed the fact that her brain-wave patterns were changing to match those of the aliens. ("The Lights of Zetar" [TOS]).
Cardiac Induction | Emergency medical resuscitative measure. Cardiac induction was used on Jean-Luc Picard on stardate 45944, following his exposure to the Kataan probe. ("The Inner Light" [TNG]).

This procedure required a large amount of the rare T-negative blood type, donated by his son, Spock. ("Journey to Babel" [TOS]).
Cryostasis | Medical procedure used to slow down biological functions in a critically injured patient, allowing the physician more time to correct the malady. Dr. Julian Bashir wanted to put Hon'Tihl, the critically injured first officer of a Klingon vessel, into cryostasis on stardate 46922, but the patient died shortly after transport to Deep Space 9. ("Dramatis Personae" [DS9]).
Cryostasis Chamber | Storage device used to preserve living being at cryogenic temperatures for later revival. Over 300 people including Amelia Earhart were abducted from Earth in 1937 and brought to the Briori homeworld in the Delta Quadrant to work as slaves. Noted Earth aviator Amelia Earhart and seven others remained in cryostasis on the planet until they were revived by the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager in 2371. ("The 37's" [VGR]).
Decompression Chamber | Medical treatment facility aboard Federation starships for patients requiring exposure to atmospheric pressures other than Class-M normal. ("Space Seed" [TOS], "The Empath" [TOS], "The Lights of Zetar" [TOS]).

A device called a neural stimulator is used in this procedure. Direct reticular stimulation was unsuccessfully attempted when Natasha Yar was critically wounded by Armus. ("Skin of Evil" [TNG]).
DNA Reference Scan | Medical test to confirm an individual's identity by matching DNA patterns. Kobliad security officer Kajada asked Dr. Julian Bashir to order a DNA reference scan to confirm the identity of a body believed to be that of her prisoner, Rao Vantika. ("The Passenger" [DS9]).
DNA Resequencing | A procedure in which a subject is genetically engineered for specific traits. It is illegal except to correct severe birth defects, but it was going on on Adigeon Prime in 2348, when Bashir's parents had it done to him. Any individual discovered to have been so treated is barred from serving in Starfleet or practicing medicine, in order to discourage the creation of genetic "supermen" like Khan Singh. In some instances the subject suffers incurable mental side effects. ("Doctor Bashir, I Presume", "Statistical Probabilities" [DS9]).
Electrophoretic Analysis | Standard medical test run to analyze cellular components. Dr. Julian Bashir ran an electrophoretic analysis on cells found in Ibudan's quarters to help determine their origin. ("A Man Alone" [DS9]).
Encephalographic Polygraph Scan | A brainwave scan used to determine truthfulness during questioning. ("The Drumhead" [TNG]).

Inner Nuncial Series | A battery of neurological tests. Dr. Crusher ran an inner nuncial series on Counselor Troi, following the loss of Troi's empathic sense in 2367. ("The Loss" [TNG]).
Jungian Therapy | Psychiatric treatment based on the theories of Carl Gustav Jung. In 2374, Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram incorporated Jungian therapy into his psychiatric subroutine ("Retrtospect" [VOY]).
K-3 Cell Count | A medical test. An imbalance of the K-3 cell count can be indicative of Urodelean flu ("Genesis" [TNG]).
K-3 Indicator | Medical measurement of neural activity
corresponding to the level of pain being experienced by a patient. The biomedical displays on Constitution-class starship sickbays incorporated a K-3 indicator. While Spock was under the control of the Denevan neural parasites in 2267, the K-3 indicator was nearly at maximum, indicating extreme pain ("Operation Annihilate" [TOS]). |
||
Level-4 Neurographic Scan | Highly detailed neural study. Much more thorough than a normal neural scan, a level-4 was intended to detect even very slight defects ("All Good Things..." [TNG]).

Neural Pathway Induction | Medical procedure used to repair damaged neural pathways in a humanoid brain. Kira Nerys required neural pathway induction after she experienced an energy discharge on the bridge of the Defiant on stardate 50814, but the Defiant's sickbay was not equipped for the procedure ("Children of Time" [DS9]).
Neural Polaric Induction | Medical procedure used to repolarize ganglionic neural sheaths in the brain ("Rapture" [DS9]).
Neuromuscular Adaptation | Medical concept in a treatise published in 2340 by Nathaniel Teros. In it, Teros theorized that stimulation of the humanoid motor cortex would increase acetylcholine absorption, increasing muscle tensile strength in low-gravity species. This would make it possible for members of such species to function in gravity fields substantially greater than those for which their bodies had evolved. In 2370, Starfleet physician Julian Bashir tested this theory, dramatically increasing muscular strength in an Elaysian. The test subject, Ensign Melora Pazlar, declined to undergo a full treatment, because she feared she would be unable to return to her homeworld once the treatment became irreversible. ("Melora" [DS9]).
Neuroregeneration | Medical technique sometimes effective in treating Yarim Fel Syndrome ("Ties of Blood and Water" [DS9]).
Neurosomatic Technique | Procedure used on planet Tilonus IV in an attempt to extract strategic information from Commander William Riker, captured there in 2369. Using neurosomatic techniques, his captors created a delusional world in which Riker believed he was an inmate at the Tilonus Institute for Mental Disorders. Riker's subconscious incorporated elements of a play called Frame of Mind into this delusional world, allowing Riker's mind to create a defense mechanism against the neurosomatic process ("Frame of Mind" [TNG]).
Osteotomy | Surgical procedure in which all of an organism's bones are removed. The procedure, used by the Hirogen to remove body parts used as prizes of the hunt, is fatal to the victim ("Hunters" [VOY]).
Psychological Profile | Complete psychological history required of all Starfleet personnel. Enterprise crew member Mira Romaine's psychological profile was examined in 2269 when her mind was occupied by the noncorporeal survivors of the planet Zetar ("Lights of Zetar" [TOS]).
Reflection Therapy | Psychiatric technique used on the planet Tilonus IV in which the patient's brain is scanned and images from brain areas that control emotions and memory are projected holographically. The patient then interacts with holographic images which represent various facets of his personality ("Frame of Mind" [TNG]).
Resonance Tissue Scan | Medical diagnostic test used by Starfleet physicians to screen for infection. Dr. Crusher ran a resonance tissue scan on Geordi La Forge when his VISOR malfunctioned after he was kidnaped by the Solanagen based aliens ("Schisms" [TNG]).

Synaptic Induction | Technique in neurotheraphy used for patients suffering from traumatic memory loss. Dr. Crusher attempted synaptic induction with the Zalkonian called John Doe in 2366, but because his neural nets did not conform to any known patterns, the therapy was ineffective ("Transfigurations" [TNG]).
Synaptic Reconstruction | Surgery which neutralizes the synaptic pathways responsible for deviant behavior. While being brainwashed on the planet Tilonus IV, Riker experienced a delusional world where he was an inmate at a mental hospital and was threatened with synpatic reconstruction to 'correct' his 'psychotic personality' ("Frame of Mind" [TNG]). |
