THE OUTLANDS is the name given to the region of space along the what used to be the Neutral Zone. A vast region of unclaimed star clusters, systems, asteroid belts and one Nebula, it is a no-man's land where most major spacefaring races can be found in some way, shape or form. Established colonies are few and far between, mostly the remnants of forgotten attempts to 'settle' this region. No laws hold sway in the Outlands, except in official 'trading enclaves' where the usual rules are 'Might makes Right' and 'Watch your Back' The Federation has a few trading bases here, but Starfleet simply cannot control the mess that is the Outlands. It is consistantly, the most dangerous region of space anywhere. Bordered upon by no less than fifteen Alpha Quadrant governments, it is an unspoken 'Neutral Zone' for everyone involved, much to their relief. More ships have been lost in these parsecs than anywhere else. It is a haven for those who are fleeing civilization or its attentions. Most utopian colonizers don't survive very long.
