Originating on the planet Bynaus, the Bynars are one of the few cybernetic species known. Unlike the Borg, the Bynars are a benign species, and many have served on Federation Starbases as computer experts. The Bynars are heavily dependant on computers, to the extent that their thought processes are as close to binary as is possible for an organic being. Indeed, they are unable to live without the central computer system on their world which interlinks them all. The Bynars, who always come in groups of two, as to communication to each other. There are similarities with the Bynars and the Borg, as in they are linked via a central computer, but they always need another one present with them, to function. Each Bynar has a device implanted into their brain, as to transfer digitally information from one Bynar to another.

Homeworld

Bynaus (101100010100110) is the third planet in orbit around Sigma Regonis. Spread across the surface of Bynaus is the Bynar's extremely sophisticated main computer network, to which each Bynar is linked. In 2364, it survived the death of the star Beta Magellan in their system.

Language

They communicate in pairs, alternating their speech.  Their primary language is a high-speed
chatter that delivers information at incredible speeds, so quickly that the Bynar's organic brains cannot
store it all - for this they use a device called a buffer.

The buffer is a cybernetic device worn on their belts that enables them to exchange information in digital form at a rate they can comprehend and utilize.

Bynars are a unisexual race that resemble humans, but stand around four feet tall on average and have enlarged, bony craniums with slender bodies. Their skin tone is lilac in color.

Biology
Bynars give birth as they reach maturity, and children are always born in pairs, linked to each other for the rest of their lives. Upon birth, a surgeon replaces the child's parietal lobe with a synaptic processor, which in itself is considered a christening ceremony. This enables them to have direct access to most computer systems via a physical link. Disconnecting a Bynar from the master computer or each other is near fatal.

Psychology
The Bynar's concept of logic is as close to binary as any organic being can get, dividing every issue into "1" or "0" choices, like that of a computer. Thinking in absolutes, Bynar logic may lead them to acts of questionable morality.

Society
Over time, they have merged their society and even their own identities into the structure of their vast computer operating system. All Bynars live and work in pairs, and are neither considered male or female but a linked pair.

Culture
The Bynars have an affinity with technology; they specialize in most science and technical skills, especially those dealing with computers. In fact, their computer skills are highly sought after within the Alpha Quadrant. They almost never found as active members of a starship though, or even starbase crew, as they prefer to stay on their homeworld, near their main computer network.

History

In 2363, the other two planets before Bynaus were destroyed in a stellar nova. The next year, they attempted to steal the U.S.S. Enterprise when their computer system was under threat. Bynar logic dictated that the need was too great, and they could not absolutely guarantee that the Federation would agree to help them. Rather than except the possibility of failure, they were prepared deal unjustly with others.

Naming Conventions
Bynar names are spoken as computer code, in binary tongue, composed entirely of ones and zeroes (ie. 110101).
