Saul Joop Bental was born to Edith, a History researcher and Shop owner, and Ilan Bental. His father perished before he was born, and Saul spent his childhood under his mother's care in the remote colony of Utrecht III.

The Bental family, A multi-branched Dutch Jewish family based on Utrecht III, is known throughout the rim-ward side of the Federation as a tribe of salty merchants with more than one hand in illegal activities.

Growing in the streets of the largest metropolis of a remote trade center, Saul gained most of his education from self-learning and from 'hands on experience' instead of more traditional methods, and eventually quit school altogether. Nevertheless, at the age of 12 he already knew more about History, Economics, and Piloting small shuttlecraft than most children his age.

From a very young age he and his group of friends were involved in many 'endeavors', some of them profitable and beneficial, and some of them on the border of the law. However, he never gained more than a small fortune, and also never 'earned' an official criminal record.

At the age of 17 he surprisingly decided to join the Utrecht III Domestic Guard, whose men he outsmarted many times in the past years. Barely two months afterward, and despite being given the boot camp commander's commendation, he quit the Guard and left Utrecht III altogether, using whatever fortune he had left to make the long voyage from the Utrecht system to Earth.

Saul applied and was accepted to Starfleet Academy. Despite achieving relatively low scores in the admission tests, Saul was discovered to be an excelling cadet. During his academy years he was known for his ambition, his 'Go-get-'em' attitude, his vast network of friends and 'connections', and his innovative and non-orthodox approaches to various situations. He starred in subjects such as Politics, Federation and Galactic History, and most of the science classes, but had only borderline grades in most subjects related to physics and mathematics.

Upon finishing the Academy Within the top 20% of his class in 2379, Saul joined Starfleet Intelligence's Special Observation program. For a year, he and his shipmates, a mix of Starfleet officers and civilian specialists, traveled areas just outside the Federation border, with a civilian Merchant ship and without any apparent ties to Starfleet, and visited many planets in order to obtain 'Non-covert' Intelligence about those planets.

After the craft's cover was nearly blown, Saul was reassigned to an attractive post as an Intelligence analyst and researcher at Starfleet Intelligence HQ. Despite being at the heart of Starfleet Intelligence's inner works, Saul constantly requested to be re-assigned to a Starship, even though a ship-board Intelligence officer is considered a less challenging post.

Eventually, on 2381, his request was granted and he was transferred to the USS Galaxy.

Soon after Saul transported to the Galaxy, the ship was involved in the major space battle which later became known as 'The Battle of Havras'. After the battle was won, two important events took place that would shape Saul's service on the Galaxy.

The first was a trip to Sakaria Saul took with one, Naranda Sol Roswell, a young and beautiful Engineer whose family lived on the planet. During his stay on Sakaria, Saul made contact with a local merchant named Karoue who ran the Bental operation in Sakaria, and recruited him for Saul's purposes.

Saul later became involved with both Naranda and the Galaxy's marine psychologist, Branwen. Eventually, it appeared that Naranda was the one to win his heart.

The other was a voyage to Bajor on the USS Valkyrie under the command of Cassius Henderson. The operation to retrieve the AWOL Galaxy Officer, Rima Pennington, was Saul's first experience as a department head. Also, during his trip to Bajor, Saul visited the planet with his newly acquired friend, the Galaxy flight controller Miramon Terrik. Together with Miramon, Saul executed a scheme against a man named Rosenthal, who was the Nexus of the Bental family's operations on Bajor. He had the man to be arrested by the local authorities, thus ruining all the plans his family members had for Bajor.

Saul became the squad leader of the secondary Intelligence Squad, 'Lily Squad', shortly before the Galaxy reached Trill, to aid in the recovery efforts after the terrorist attack on the Trill Capital of Leran Manev.

During the mission on Trill, Saul approached Nara Roswell and informed her that an assassin was hired to kill her. Together, they faked Nara's death, without reporting the scheme to any superior officers. This gave Nara's father an opening to find and arrest the man who hired the assassin, but both Nara and Saul received reprimands for failing to report that Nara was not dead.

Despite the reprimand, Saul was transferred to the position of Chief Tactical Officer on the Galaxy several months after the starship left Trill toward the Hydran border. Soon after, he finished his Master's degree, handing out his thesis on the subject of t he Hydran Sovereign Monarchy – U.F.P. relations.

Saul returned to the intelligence department - this time, as department head - shortly before the invasion of Romulus. Before the battle to retake Romulus, he helped develop a tactic to counter the triad's most fearsome weapon: the Starbeast. He also participated in the battle itself, taking temporarily the role of the USS Exeter's Chief Tactical Officer under Brevet Captain Elessidil's command.

It should be noted that since 2381, Saul was contacted several times by his family members after years of being out of touch with them. This fact suggests that he may have some unfinished business with his family.

Saul has several very remarkable attributes. He is highly intelligent and street-wise; He is also very ambitious, and likes to be in the center of things. Following his Dutch heritage, he is the kind of person who enjoys trading and bargaining, and is the person to come to if one needs to get anything. He is an adventurer to the bone, and always enjoys new experiences.

Saul also has a handful of problems, although none too severe. He is a tad arrogant, and often patronizes his colleagues who grew 'on a velvet cushion', in a more comfortable environment than he did. He is the kind of person who keeps a grudge once he has one. Also, being an old fashioned man, he has very strong opinions against various matters (A famous example is religion; During his academy years Saul had several very loud and passionate debates with some of the more religious cadets).

Saul always tries to avoid physical fight at all costs. He prefers ranged fights (In which he is quite good), or even better – to use his wits and avoid any fighting at all.

Despite having a very rich life experience compared to his age, Saul has very little romantic experience (despite being a romantic guy, as he often portrayed himself in counseling interviews), and until he became tied with Nara Roswell, he had no known serious past relationships with the opposite sex.

Finally, Saul is the kind of person who keeps and follows his own agendas. Despite showing nothing but loyalty and devotion to Starfleet before his transfer to the Galaxy, this should be noted.

Saul has brown eyes and light brown hair.

Saul has some Bolian blood, originating from one of his grand-grandparents. He takes a medicine on a daily basis which prevents several interesting physical symptoms such as his skin gaining an odd shade of Blue.
