Lieutenant Charlie Everett was an engineer aboard the USS Integrity in late 2356 when he met Ensign Susan McGuire, a recent graduate from Starfleet Medical Academy, and he fell head-over-heels in love the moment he saw her. After several days of touch-and-go courtship, Charlie swept the beautiful doctor off her feet with his "New Texan charm" (as he called it), and they were married scarcely more than a month after Susan's arrival aboard the Integrity. About ten months later their only child, Nathaniel Charles Everett, was born on Charlie's homeworld of New Texas; the Everetts have never been known for taking things slowly.

The couple felt that having a young child aboard a starship wouldn't be very safe, so Nathan (as he prefers to be called) spent the first few years of his life with his grandparents on New Texas. He joined his parents when he was five, and from that point on he spent an overwhelming majority of his life in space, living on five different starships as his parents advanced through Starfleet. The only real time he spent planetside during his early childhood was on his parents' shore leaves, which were always spent either visiting his father's home in Traviston, New Texas, or his mother's home in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Nathan, who took more after his father, preferred New Texas to New York, but for him, neither location compared to the vastness and beauty of space. When not running amok with his friends, Nathan could usually be found in an observation lounge, just sitting there and looking out at the stars.

Both of his parents hoped to convince Nathan to follow in their own footsteps; Charlie (whose career choice was influenced by his Uncle Jake, a Starfleet engineer himself) wanted Nathan to be an engineer, while Susan hoped to see her son become a doctor. However, Nathan found neither medicine nor engineering particularly interesting; he was obsessed with simply exploring the universe and venturing into uncharted regions of space. He found that far more intriguing than what either of his parents did. Given his background and interests, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Nathan would join Starfleet when he was old enough.

When hostilities with the Dominion began to intensify in 2373, Nathan's parents once again sent him to live with Charlie's family on New Texas. He continued his education there for the next two years, and as soon as he'd finished his final year of basic studies at the age of eighteen, Nathan applied to and was accepted into Starfleet Academy. Just a couple of months after arriving at the Academy, Nathan took part in the defense of San Francisco when the Breen attacked the city in late 2375.

At the Academy, Nathan performed exceptionally well in all of his classes dealing with mathematics, astrogation, stellar cartography, and astrometry. However, he was only average in his other classes, doing just well enough to pass them; this wasn't because of a lack of ability, but a lack of interest in the subjects that didn't deal with flight control and navigation. He briefly considered joining the Starfleet Starfighter Corps, but that idea was quickly forgotten, as he reasoned that a true explorer belonged at the helm of a starship, not sitting in a cramped cockpit with a stick between his legs.

Nevertheless, Nathan proved to be a supremely talented pilot who was unmatched in his class, and his skill won him a membership in Nova Squadron, Starfleet Academy's elite flight team.

Despite growing up aboard numerous Starfleet vessels, strict discipline was never properly instilled in Nathan, and so he had a bad habit of bending the rules to their limit. While Nathan maintained an above-average GPA and was one of his class's most active participants in athletics and other extracurricular activities, he was also quite the troublemaker and earned more demerits than anyone else. He was involved in one particularly difficult (though highly enjoyable) situation during his final year, when he became sexually involved with his Advanced Warp Theory professor. The Academy Commandant eventually learned of this affair, and would have expelled Nathan and fired the professor had she not been married to a highly influential admiral.

The admiral, more concerned about his wife's public image than his being made a cuckold by someone barely out of his teens, forced the Academy to keep the incident under wraps.  Nathan was reprimanded for fraternization, and that was the end of it.

Nathan graduated in 2379 and was assigned to the USS Mercury as a helmsman, where he served for three unfulfilling years. Even though he was promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade and the position of Assistant Chief Flight Controller during his tour, Nathan was unhappy with his life on the Mercury. He found his captain uninspiring and his crew difficult to get along with, so he put in for a transfer to a new posting. However, the only one available at the time that Nathan was qualified for was a spot in the USS Miranda's Rogue Group, a Starfighter Corps unit. Desperate to get away from the Mercury, Nathan swallowed his pride and requested the position.

This, however, turned out to be a good decision on his part, as he quickly learned that being a fighter pilot was his true calling.

Nathan made a name for himself as a Rogue, and he flew combat missions across the Federation, in the Delta Quadrant, against the Orion Syndicate, at the Battle of Romulus, and even in an alternate universe. The two years he spent aboard the Miranda were easily the best of his life, but when he was offered a promotion to Deputy Commander of the USS Galaxy's fighter wing, Nathan couldn't turn it down.

Nathan is a pretty happy-go-lucky guy, and tends to make friends easily. He's a bit of a clown and a wisecracker, and normally tries to defuse a tense situation with a joke or a witty comment. He is also somewhat unpredictable in the cockpit, which tends to have a polarizing effect on the people he works with; some of them love the way Nathan flies, and some of them look upon him with dread when they see him form up on their wing.

Nathan has a quick, analytical, and clever mind. He's fairly ambitious, and because of this it's difficult for him to be tolerant and understanding of those who desire less in life or who are slower and more methodical by nature; patience is not his forte. He also has a very active (some would say hyperactive) sex drive, and because of this he is almost constantly seeking out female companionship. He doesn't normally remain with the same woman for very long, however, as he's never been very good with relationships. It's difficult to say whether this attitude is due to his constant moving around as a child or just overactive hormones, but it's clear that Nathan is enjoying himself far too much to care.

During the Battle of Romulus, his parents' ship, the USS Regulus, suffered heavy damage and was nearly destroyed. This was a stark wake-up call for Nathan, who had never before been struck so hard by fear. The realization that he'd nearly lost his parents forced Nathan to reevaluate his life and the way he'd been living it. In the months following the battle, Nathan has begun to turn over a new leaf. He's become a more mature individual, and is less prone to some of the more childish antics he became known for during his stint on the Miranda.

That isn't to say that Nathan has mellowed out completely, however. He still knows how to have a good time and enjoy himself. He wouldn't be the Cowboy otherwise.

Family:
Father: Captain Charlie Everett, Commanding Officer, USS Regulus
Mother: Commander Dr. Susan Everett, Chief Medical Officer, USS Regulus

As a result of Nathan's spaceborne upbringing, the first time that he spent more than a few weeks not in space was the two years he spent on New Texas during the Dominion War. During his first few months there, Nathan felt a sort of fear and helplessness being outdoors and under an open sky for so long, and he was eventually diagnosed with mild agoraphobia. While he was able to get through it with the help of counselors, family, and friends, Nathan is still wary of going planetside for extended periods of time.
