Steven is the illegitimate son of Lt Cmdr Phillip Vaughtin, Chief Security Officer of the USS Saratoga and Pamela Angeline the wife of the Trill Ambassador to Earth after they indulged in a six month love affair. Deeply ashamed of his wife's adulterous affair, the Ambassador committed suicide shortly after the child's birth. Pamela died the next year in the Anchorage VI plague of 2351. This left Steven in the care of his half sister Katrina who was teaching at a special school for hearing impaired children on Betazoid.
He excelled at maths and logic in the Federation Integration School, but found the physics and chemistry harder than most students. Not knowing what to do after his school days, his sister suggested that Steven enter the Betazoid Military Academy which he did. Two years later a disciplined, stronger and wiser 17 year old Steven emerged with a new lease on life and a desire to find his father. A search which took him to his birth planet. Alas, his desire to know his father came to an abrupt halt when he found out that his father had died the previous year at the infamous Wolf 359 battle. Broke, and with no job prospects, Steven decided to continue his military training by joining the Starfleet Marine Corps. After a year of basic Marine Corps training, and a 4 year stint on the USS Missouri, Steven furthered his training by entering the SERE course at the Academy, gaining advanced survival training skills and experience. His next posting, as a Sergeant, at Starbase 357 (which was based near the Cardassian-Federation border) allowed him to gain in skill and confidence. However, during 2374, after fighting as part of the large task force that tried to retake Deep Space Nine from the hands of the Dominion, he was captured and spent 2 weeks in a Dominion detention camp before escaping back to the Federation. A few years passed before Steven decided that he wanted to join the infamous SFMC Reconnaissance unit that was spearheading the fight against the Dominion. This meant more time at the Marine Academy, and in 2376 Steven was granted leave, and permission (he was only a Staff Sergeant at the time and you normally had to be at least a Second Lieutenant to get in) to begin the Special Ops training required to join the unit. During his tenure with the 7th Reconnaissance unit, Steven traveled to many worlds to help with civil wars, unrest, invasions, and a host of other more secretive missions. Steven was captured by the Kaleans and was held as a prisoner after infiltrating their home planet on a recon mission. However, he managed to escape within 24 hours and even dragged 2 fellow recon officers out with him. In that same year, while commanding a Platoon after a battlefield commission to 2nd Lt., Steven was awarded the Marine Cross of Gallantry for helping save several Federation diplomats and their families on a world where a civil war had started, despite losing the love of his life in the process. Steven received the first and only reprimand of his career due to the striking of the officer on duty of the Task force's Communications team after he reported that the area was too 'hot' and an evac of a critically injured marine was not possible. During the subsequent review of the striking incident and in conjunction with the mission review, it was determined that the officer had falsely declared that no evac was available so as to not endanger any Navy personnel for the sake of a single marine. He was subsequently demoted and reassigned. Acting 2nd Lt. Jonas was forced to spend 10 days in the brig as a result of the incident. Due to Starfleet policy on battlefield commissions of NCO's to Officers, Steven was forced to return to the marine academy for Officer training. |

Steven is generally a quiet person, until he gets to know you. As is typical of marines, he can be loud and brash at times. He has a deeper hatred of the Navy in general due to past incidents, and finds that Navy people need to prove themselves more to him than other marines before he trusts them.
Steven finds it difficult in large groups in social situations and tends to shy away from them when he can. He has seen and done things that most starfleet officers couldn't even dream about and often is found drowning the memories with frequent trips to Ten-Forward. He has a phobia of doctors and needles and tries to stay away from everything medical related. In his spare time, you will generally find Steven working out in the Gym, swimming in the pool, drinking in Ten-Forward or using the holodecks. |

Both of Steven's parents are dead, and he has 2 half-sisters Katrina and
Julia, neither of whom he hasn't seen in over 3 years.
As part of his mixed heritage, Jonas does not have the common Trill spot markings running the length of his body, but rather a cluster of them over his heart. Steven's last name 'Jonas' is his half-sister Katrina's middle name, though no one but his sister knows this. Steven also has a mass of scars on his back from the torture endured as a Prisoner of War in a detention camp run by the Dominion. Though they have healed and don't cause much pain to him, he has steadfastly refused to have the scars removed as a reminder of the suffering he endured. |
