Savar ir'Aihai tr'Khellian is the only son of Seylar, a powerful faction leader in the Romulan Senate. From an early age his interest in the military was encouraged by his mother who administered the estates of this minor branch of the power House of Khellian whilst Seylar engaged in military campaigns, often being away from ch'Rihan for years at a time. At the age of twelve Savar was sent to the ch'Rihan Academy, an elite educational institution reserved for the sons of the patriciate class. Here he was educated in the traditional fashion, inculcated with the values and desires of the Romulan ruling class, learned about Romulan high culture and official history, and prepared for a career in the military. During his time at the Academy, Savar's grandfather died, and Seylar retired his commission to take up his seat on the Romulan senate, continuing a family tradition of following a distinguished military career with political machinations at the heart of the Empire. After graduating with honours from the ch'Rhian Academy, Savar was put to work administering the family estates for four months whilst his parents were off-world on political business. During this period he met many commoners for the first time and came to understand a little about their very different experience of life on the Romulan homeworld. Some of the encounters he had with his poverty-stricken tenants were to have serious ramifications in his later thought. After this brief sojourn, Savar was enrolled in the Imperial Academy and trained as an officer at the War College. His focus at this time was tactical and strategic studies, the most sought-after specialization as it essentially acts as a fast-track to command. He received special treatment at the College thanks to his family's power, and was able to graduate very near the top of his year with few difficulties. His first commission out of the College was also arranged by his father - Tactical Officer on the Imperial Battleship Hnoiyika. Thus began a promising and brilliant career as an accomplished and cunning tactician. Savar advanced remarkably swiftly through the ranks, thanks to his own abilities but largely due to the interference of his father and his allies. He moved into command rapidly and served with distinction in the border conflict with the Jurai Protectorate, which hoped to take advantage of the RSE's distraction with the Dominion War. Protectorate forces were, however, routed and Savar's ship was part of a counter-offensive driving deep into Jurai space to claim more territory for the Empire. This campaign extended into a general aggrandizement along the Empire's 'eastern' border. Savar was personally responsible for annexing two star systems before the terrible events of 2379 sent him hurtling back to the homeworld. It was fortunate for his father that he was suffering from a sustained illness and was therefore absent during Shinzon's massacre of the entire Romulan Senate. By the time Savar's vessel reached Romulus, Shinzon had left in pursuit of the USS Enterprise-E. Savar and other warbird commanders engaged the remnants of the Reman fleet and was decorated for his success in battle. Savar was called upon to attend a meeting of the reconstructed Senate in the absence of his father. During the last four years of his career, Savar had become deeply disillusioned with the policies being decided by the Senate and seized the opportunity to criticize the expansionistic aims of Romulan policy, blaming Rihannsu oppressiveness for the Reman rebellion. Unfortunately, what was left of the Romulan patriciate was not interested in hearing this indictment. His coruscating attack on accepted strategy caused a public scandal, and Savar was stripped of his command. His father's allies intervened to prevent further repercussions and he was exiled from Romulus to save further embarrassments for his family. Only his highly-decorated status saved him from demotion. Contacts arranged for him to participate on the newly-created officer exchange programme with Starfleet Command, and he was duly reassigned to the post of Assistant Tactical Officer aboard USS Galaxy. |

Like most Romulans, Savar
is a deeply suspicious, even paranoid person. His upbringing has left him
outwardly cold and haughty, and unthinkingly arrogant as he expects to be
obeyed without question at all times. Despite his attempts to control his
emotions and retain rationality (he has some sympathies for the Vulcan reunification
movement), when challenged he rapidly becomes emotional and is more often
than not guided by his general mistrust of everyone around him, something
he learned the hard way in the Romulan Star Empire.
Savar is, however, a highly intelligent and quite sensitive young man with a highly astute political mind. Although much of his talents have been put to use in the field of tactical and strategic endeavours, he is well-cultured and far more than the sum of his parts. |
||
Savar speaks English with
a British accent, as this is the mode of pronunciation favoured by the snobbish
teachers of the Imperial Academy.
The little finger of his left hand is artificial. A falling bulkhead crushed Savar's hand during battle four years ago and the smallest finger was crushed beyond repair. Although this does not really hinder him, he is self-conscious about this as any sort of disability is generally reviled by Romulan society. |
