Hok was born on Ferenginar, the younger of two brothers. His father, Grax, was extremely wealthy. In addition to their own business ventures, Hok and his brother, Nezel, worked with their father.
Hok didn't know it at the time, but his father was connected to the Orion Syndicate and was involved in many illegal deals. When Hok was twenty-five, his father died in an accident. Nezel took over the business, but it was rough for both of them, as they missed their father. When Nezel died in an accident a few months later, Hok was devastated. It was very difficult for Hok, but he stepped in and assumed leadership of the business. While on a trip off-world to renew a contract with one of his father's old business partners, Hok was approached by a Human man. This man asked Hok when he would be handing over 'the item.' Having no idea what the man meant, Hok said as much. The man became insistent, implying Hok would experience an accident, if he didn't agree to hand over whatever this 'item' was. Repeating that he didn't know what it was, the man told Hok he had one week. Completing his business off-world, Hok rushed home to Ferenginar. He frantically searched the records from his father's past business dealings, but he couldn't find anything that would lead him to what 'the item' was or where it was. At the end of the week he was given by the mysterious man, his moogie, Tyia, fell ill and slipped into a coma. Doctors couldn't explain how or why. At the hospital, Hok thought he caught a glimpse of the Human man. The next day, Hok was summoned to appear before the Ferengi Commerce Authority. Some old enemies of his father had manipulated circumstances, and had an investigation launched against the Grax family business. To Hok's chagrin, his business license was revoked and all his assets were confiscated. Hok had nothing, had no future on Ferenginar, and had no way to provide for his sick moogie. Fortunately, an old family friend that had once been a suitor of Tyia, stepped forward and said he would care for her. Satisfied, Hok decided to go to Earth to try to start anew. He signed onto a freighter, to work as part of the crew, to pay his passage. On Earth, Hok was able to find work, but being a Ferengi, he was still filled with the desire for profit, so he considered opening a restaurant. Being a Ferengi, no one trusted him, so he wasn't able to secure a location for the business. Add to that, he spotted the man that had told him to turn over 'the item.' In fear for his life, and with no real prospects for profit, Hok did what he felt was the craziest thing he could ever do. He applied to join Starfleet Academy. To Hok's amazement, after a series of grueling tests, and a long background check, he was accepted. Since he had always been the pilot of his father's private ship, piloting and conn is the field he chose. He was twenty-five. At age twenty-nine, Hok graduated and was given his commission. He was surprised at how proud he was at this accomplishment. He still had the drive for profit, but he also had the commitment and loyalty of a Starfleet officer. His life had definitely taken a turn he would have never imagined. After serving on Earth as a shuttle pilot for nearly a year, Hok was summoned to meet with his commanding officer. Fearing that he had done something wrong, he was shocked, and relieved, to learn he had been transferred to the USS Galaxy. |

As is typical for Ferengi, Hok is very outgoing. He always shows friendliness to everyone he meets, whether it's genuine or not. He is generally a likable person, and is a loyal friend, if a person is his friend, but he's still driven by profit. After all, his motivation for joining Starfleet in the first place, was to have a safe and protected path for his life. He has an inner conflict with his Ferengi nature and what he learned about being a Starfleet officer. |

Hok is extremely adept at math, managing resources, negotiating, reading people, and seeing the angle behind things. Because of his four-lobed brain, he is immune to telepathy and empathy. His large ears give him an incredible sense of hearing. He has a Universal Translator implanted in his left ear. |
