The 77th Count of Velgertaa was born 13th in line for the family title during one of the bloodiest periods of the war-filled Nassarian history. Bound by the sheer will of successive strong monarchs of the royal family, the Nassari plunged into a series of ruthless inter-familial wars when an assassin killed the reigning monarch Jukaam XVII, leaving his child-heir subject to the regency of an unpopular majordomo. Within the course infancy, Jarajen Quaaliu became heir designate of his family's titles and estates – a tradition steeped in history, but due to the misfortunes of war, virtually worthless. The Adjeraan Regency was mercifully brief, lasting only a few years. The emerging Monarch, Vanselm XXIII, proved a strong, uniting force who forged an unprecedented, lasting peace and successfully presented the Nassari into the Federation. Jarrius Quaaliu, Jarajen 's father, had wisely linked his fate to that of the Monarchy, and found the interaction with the alien representatives at the Federation mission to be both enlightening and disturbing. The strangers described a mob-rule government independent of the concepts of nobility and divine right. Jarajen was both repulsed and curious, and was given a letter of marque from the Nassari king to join Starfleet to learn more of the Federation. Starfleet Academy was a stark study in contrasts for the young Nassari. The concept of dueling was foreign to most races, and those that were familiar with it saw the code behind it as only a historical curiosity. The Nassari were not amongst the most technologically advanced people in the Federation, and he found the grasp of many of the mathematics and physics difficult. Jarajen also found the discipline of the institution sadly lacking. Outcast and isolated, he endured only out of a deep commitment to the word given to his king and to his father. By the third year he was on the verge of resigning when he had the opportunity of flying in the Academy's Gold Squadron programme. If there was one technological area the Nassari excelled in, it was aeronautics. Jarajen had piloted small recreational craft on his homeworld, and took to piloting a fighter like an eagle takes to the skies to command them. He was a natural, and experienced a personal joy that had escaped him during his time on Earth. Quaaliu quickly became the best pilot in his class, and was rushed to continued training at the Advanced Flight School on Saturn Station. Jarajen's first assignment was on the Jupiter-class USS Miranda-A under the command of Admiral Victor Murdock as part of the first fleet. Although no stranger to warfare, the Nassari's baptism by fire during the Dominion Wars defied his own vivid imagination. Assigned to Rogue Squadron, Jarajen developed into a highly skilled, extremely protective wingman. More than one pilot chafed under the forced presence of the stoic Nassari, but each one of them managed to voice their complaints – aloud and alive – after the war was over. Jarajen became an 'Old Rogue' not by assignment, but by bravery, sweat, persistence, nerves, and more than his fair share of luck. At the end of the Dominion Wars, many of the Rogues were assigned to other ships to 'spread the wealth'. Jarajen was assigned to the USS Midway and helped to form Wolf Squadron on the heavy cruiser. The Midway was assigned to the Romulan/Federation border, and Quaaliu performed well during a number of 'incidents' with the fighter craft of the Second Galae. He eventually became the CAG of the Midway in 2379. In 2382 Jarajen received word that his father's health had declined, and was approaching the time to join their honoured ancestors. The Kej, the Nassari honor-code, demanded that Major Jarajen attend his father's passing. For the Federation, however, the nefarious events of the 'Federation Day" incident placed Starfleet on high alert. Jarajen ignored his captain's direct orders, stole a runabout, and made a beeline to the Nassari homeworld in full knowledge of the consequences. Diplomatically, drumming out the newest Count of Velgertaa was not the prudent choice during a time when the Federation needed all the strength of its member-worlds. Jarajen was demoted to Lieutenant and assigned a backwater post as an instructor at the Saturn Flight School. If Command sought to crush the Nassari's spirit, they didn't know much of the Kej or the character of "Quatro" Quaaliu. Jarajen proved to be a demanding but excellent teacher, inspiring a level of competence and discipline in his students the Starfighter group sorely needed. Still, while confident that his efforts contributed to a stronger fleet, it wasn't a combat post and Jarajen was, above all else, a warrior. Repeated requests eventually broke wore down the administration, and in late 2383 he was reassigned as CAG to the USS Galaxy's Vanguard squadron. |

It's been said that "Quatro" Quaaliu can outstare a Klingon, out-barter a Ferengi, out-argue a Tellarite, and out-logic a Vulcan. These are, of course, crass racial over-exaggerations created by the students at Saturn Flight School but give a glimpse into Jarajen's character. He's a stoic competitor who puts everything into every contest, whether it's a game of cards or a dogfight. Quatro also adheres fanatically to the Kej – he will offer no lie, break no oath, betray no lord, and commit no dishonour to the Nassari. His commitment to the Federation was been stated repeatedly with blood of its enemies, as the Kej requires. While stoic and warlike, Jarajen is no barbarian. An accomplished musician and poet, he has sometimes performed as a diplomat in court functions for both the Nassari and the Federation. His sense of humour is rare, subtle, and vicious. |

The Nassari are humanoids with gold-tinged skin and four arms. Their society is a complex, feudal-like culture based on a strict honour code called the Kej. The Kej binds father to son, mother to daughter, the people to the Monarchy, and the Monarch to the land. It is an integral part of Nassari society, and dishonouring or rejecting the Kej us a dualable offense. Suicide is the honourable solution. |
