It has often been said that people who become veteran NCOs are from a certain mould. Renora Loret would certainly be one of those people. Born in a Cardassian labour camp at the height of the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, she learnt that life would not be easy at a very young age.

Her father died before she was born she grew up in the company of her fellow prisoners and the Cardassian forces. Her chances of survival as a newborn in the harsh environment were nil and she would certainly have met her death had the wife of the camps commander, a woman named Seliaan Marak, not taken her in. Seliaan, who was unable to mother children of her own, thought of the young Renora as the daughter she had always prayed for. Her husband, however, was less pleased. Gul Marak had been brought up a very traditional Cardassian, warlike and very much in favour of the occupation.

Her formative years were, by the standards of a labour camp, not that unpleasant. She was forced to work in the mines but Seliaan always ensured she was sent with her own mother. She had never wanted to split them up but knew that Renora would not have had a chance without her. She stayed in the rooms of the commandant's residence and was allowed to eat comparatively well. As she got older she began to feel guilty about this as she was forced to see her mother and her fellow captives starve and be beaten.

Shortly after her ninth birthday Renora had seen her mother become slightly ill, nothing that would threaten her life normally but the conditions of the camps were such that her mother was not able to fight the infection to the best of her ability. Renora, now being older, wiser and more independent of her Cardassian captors, began to smuggle the better food out of the commandant s house and to the slaves in the camp.

It was during one of these runs that she was spotted by Gul Marak stealing food from the stores in his home. He dragged the child outside and threw her down into the dirt and dust that covered the labour area. He gathered all the slaves together and showed them what would happen to anyone who he found stealing from the Cardassians. He pulled out a whip and beat the child across her back leaving a series of deep cuts across her spine. Then he brought her mother forwards and ordered the guards to execute her. Renora could only watch as her mother was gunned down while she lay bleeding on the stony ground.

Renora was taken back to the camps infirmary where the camps doctor, a man named Jarec Linoka, treated her. The Cardassian doctor was kind man, timid and frightened. He did his job as well as the sadistic commander, who had become more cruel and vicious towards the prisoners since his wife left him and returned to Cardassia, would let him. Keeping the prisoners alive while never really healing them.

As the next few years passed Renora carried out her duties at the mine and became stronger and fitter. Her wounds healed and she began to grow close with members of the underground movement. She became part of raids on food supplies, sabotage missions and attacks on patrols. This gave her a good grounding in tactics and combat. These clandestine raids continued until, shortly before she turned eighteen, the camp came under attack from a large force of rebels. It was during this conflict that she made her move. She slipped past the guards of the commandant's house, who were too busy fighting the uprising and caught Marak by surprise. He dropped to his knees and begged for mercy from the young Bajoran woman, his eyes full of fear. She told him that she would show him the same mercy that he had showed her and her mother. She slipped the knife between his ribs easily, like she had be shown a hundred times before, then as the man struggled to crawl away from her she fired several shots from a hand held phaser, killing Marak. Her mother had been avenged.

Fleeing form the planet she stowed away on a passenger freighter that was traveling to Bajor to collect more slaves. Form here she caught passage on a Ferengi trade ship which was bound for Earth. Landing in San Francisco with no family, no friends and no way to support herself she did the only thing that seemed to make sense. She signed up with Starfleet.

Following her basic training she was assigned as a phaser rifleman on the USS Iowa and sent straight out into the Federation-Tzenkethi war. Renora was employed as a ground troop for the main and was able to utilize her experience of guerrilla warfare to an advantage.

Following a promotion to full crewman she decided that she wanted to experience the wider aspect of her work and also expand into areas such as ship to ship and ship to surface activities. She was transferred to the Okinawa and then got herself a transfer to the USS Black Hawk as a gunner s mate and gunner respectively. Though the job was fairly tedious and mundane she did take all of the available time to study tactical reports and other data that she could put to use in her role as a member of a tactical team.

Her career took a slight turn for the worse during her stay on the Black Hawk when she discovered that the ships chief intelligence officer deliberately withheld information regarding defenses of a marquis outpost. As a result three of the team Renora was a part of were killed. Incensed by the actions of the woman, Lieutenant Commander Galloway, she assaulted her in the ships canteen, leaving her with a broken jaw and Renora with a demotion, transfer and thirty days of brig time.

This was, however, not the worst possible assignment she could've had. The job was supposed to be a punishment but she reveled in learning the more technical side systems she used, being of the opinion that there may not always be an engineer to help you out. The posting was cut short when the USS Gage was destroyed at the battle of Wolf 359.

After Wolf Renora was returned to her previous rank and given a post as the armoury officer on the USS Highlander. This was another dreary assignment but she tried to make the best of it, learning about the weapons and even trying her hand at weaponsmithing. After three years of practice she actually became quite a good armourer and weapons design expert, learning all of the problems, advantages of ways to optimize most weapons. Feeling she had learnt all she could from this posting she applied to the USS Thunderchild as an active member to the tactical staff. This brought her life back full circle to another confrontation with the Borg at the battle of sector 001.

This time, however, Renora would not allow herself to be sidelined as she had been before. She immediately returned to duty aboard the USS Oberon and then, following another promotion two years later was assigned as the tactical analyst aboard the USS Maelstrom, a carrier. This posting was different from every thing that had gone before it. A large amount of work was required vectoring in the star fighters that operated from the parent ship and also the co-ordination of the ground troops to air activities. She found herself thinking more about numbers than the actual people on the ground and, by the end of the Dominion war she wanted to get back to some ground root practices. Following a posting in dispatches she applied and was successful in becoming the tactical trainer at the Wolf Station ranger academy.

This was a task she, loved, taking cadets and people straight out of the academy and teaching them what they needed to know. She was a harsh but fair instructor who only wanted her brood to be the best they possibly could. Unfortunately the position was only available for so long before she felt the draw of a life in space again and the urge to learn new tricks.

She left with the good graces of the academy and was posted aboard the USS Galaxy as a tactical officer.

Renora has two very distinct sides to her character. The first is of a very strong, model Starfleet NCO with a history of combat and tactical excellence that cares deeply about the job and the people. The other side of her personality is still very much that of a rebel and this is what has made her the thorn in the side of several of her former CO's. She has been know to be undisciplined and has little time for red tape. While officially this has only been reported on her service record a few times she has had more run-in s with previous crew than anyone would care to admit. It is not that she wants to be a disruption it stems from a genuine desire to try and do her job to the best of her skills. She will listen and respect the wishes of her superiors but she does have to choke it down sometimes when she is given orders by ensigns straight out of the academy who think that they know it all.

Renora has her markings from the labour camp on her upper right arm. She has three large scars running from her left shoulder to her right hip on her back where she was beaten by the camp commandant. Despite her combat record and time in the Bajoran underground she still feels a great deal of remorse and guilt for people she has killed during her life, even Marak. She can often be found at temple praying that those souls will find peace and that she will find forgiveness. She still visits the doctor who cared for her during the time at the labour camp whenever she is on Bajor, he is a prisoner there but she owes him a great deal and feels this is the least she can do for his kindness.
