Ciara was born into a highly conservative Trill family; for centuries, the eldest son in every generation of the Soralax family had been approved by the Symbiosis Commission to be joined. From their earliest years, Soralax children, particularly the boys, would be trained by their parents, bullied and pressured into pursuing high-flying careers in medicine, law or the civil service in order to gain approval. Being the only child of Hazri Soralax, Ciara was similarly brought up with the expectation she would be joined, despite her father's disappointment at the lack of a son.
Ciara's mother, Jul'ria Soralax, was an unjoined Trill Doctor whom Hazri had met during his travels across the galaxy. A year later, they were married and Ciara born. Ciara grew up in a good family home; although her father was a businessman and a politician, and was away from home frequently. Her mother was a family doctor however, and worked at a local clinic, allowing her far more time with her daughter. Other than the pressure to excel academically from her father (who was still hoping for a son), the first eight years of the young Ciara's life were largely happy ones. Her mother Jul'Ria Soralax was kidnapped on the 1st November 2363 at 15:05, on her way to pick up the young Ciara from school, by a hired Nausicaan criminal group, and she remained missing for three weeks, until her remains were discovered on a remote asteroid trading outpost. Despite the efforts of the Federation Investigation Service, the individuals who hired the group were never identified, although it is widely believed to be an act of retaliation against Hazri Soralax. Hazri spent the days following his wife's funeral locked in his Study, barely emerging for a fortnight. Then he went up to Ciara's room and spoke to her about what had happened. Brutally honest and far too complicated for the young girl to understand, he told her how he was going to fight to see justice brought about, and that Ciara was the only thing keeping him alive at the moment. Reminding Ciara once more that he expected her to grow up to become a host, he left the house. Deliberately avoiding the family home, he travelled widely and threw himself into his business, returning once or twice a year to visit the daughter he had left largely in the hands of the kind, but elderly Nanny Roziz, the family housekeeper and nanny. So it was that for the remaining ten years of her childhood that her Nanny became her surrogate parent. Nanny Roziz was always a strict but delightful woman who brought Ciara up to be a perfect young lady. The two remain exceedingly close and Nanny Roziz has become like an adopted Grandmother. Progressing through standard secondary and tertiary educuation with ease, Ciara enrolled on her Batchelor's Degree in Politics & Interstellar Relations at the University of Mak'ala. From there she moved on, as expected, to Trill Initiate Training. There she initially did well, until a final genetic analysis was carried out (previous tests not having been considered neccessary, Ciara being a member of the Soralax bloodline) which ascertained that her Maternal Great Grandfather had been half-human; Ciara was rejected. She returned in shame to a father who had come home in anticipation of her approval. Bitterly disappointed, angry and ashamed, in the one conversation he had with Ciara he blamed her mother, making all sorts of allegations, infuriating Ciara, who reacted instinctively, slapping him. Giving one last, piercing, stare he muttered one final sentence, "I have no daughter." before turning, and leaving the house; the last time Ciara saw the man. Her father was not the only one who dropped everything to do with her, all the members of her paternal family began to snub her. Angry and confused, Ciara decided not to allow the refusal of a symbiot to ruin her life, and jumped aboard a transport to Betazed to continue her studies at the Federation Institute of Social Studies. Following this, she worked as an Intern for a UFP Senator, before joining the newly-formed Federation Liason Corps as a trainee. Completing her training, she worked as a junior Policy Officer in the Romulan Bureau of the Federation Liason Corps, building up her language skills. Following an angry clash of personalities with her Andorian line manager, Ciara was transferred sideways within the Corps to become an Attaché on the USS Galaxy, not an oppurtunity she relished, interpreting the decision (correctly) as a punishment for speaking her mind. |

'... Ciara R. Soralax still feels very sharply the effects of having been forbidden the privilege of carrying a symbiot. This can lead to slight depression, but she seems to have developed coping strategies. I reccomend a review of the situation in six months ...' |
