- USS Enterprise puts in for repairs at Starbase 47, a Watchtower class starbase also known as Vanguard, weeks after crossing the galactic barrier (TOS: Vanguard #1). - The Tholian Lattice is disrupted by a thought-pulse that temporarily usurps the network and every Tholian (TOS: Vanguard #1). - Uhura, Bailey and Rand are (re)assigned to the bridge crew. McCoy returns as Chief Medical Officer. Kirk delivers the eulogy at Mitchell's funeral. (My Brother's Keeper: Enterprise - TOS#87) [Note: It is inferred that Uhura, Bailey and Rand are coming aboard the Enterprise for the first time. Also, McCoy claims to have served with Kirk previously aboard the Constitution, but not the Enterprise.] - Having completely plundered the planet of Oghen, the Neyel Hegemony sends forth a fleet of ships to conquer and colonize additional worlds. (The Lost Era: The Sundered - Ch. 20) - Following a minor refit of the Enterprise and changes in uniform design, the famed "five-year mission" begins. - Ingraham B is attacked by the same parasite creatures that later decimates the population of Deneva (TOS: "Operation: Annihilate"). - After more than 100 years of isolation, a Romulan starship crosses the Neutral Zone and attacks Earth outposts, until it can be destroyed by the Enterprise. - Federation starts to log distress calls along Romulan Neutral Zone. OutPost Four reports 'brief plasma discharge of awesome power' from unknown ship surprising base, damaging outpost through full shields and under almost a mile of solid rock. Unknown ship vanishes after attack. - The Enterprise investigates a self-imposed quarantine of the planet Timshel, and discovers the citizens are enslaved to a computer that produces an artificial euphoria. (The Joy Machine - TOS#80) - The Enterprise rescues member of the Anjiri and Nykuss, but does not log the incident to protect the location of their homeworld. 2265, January |
- The Enterprise returns to Earth to undergo crew rotation and refit after
the tragic events at Delta Vega. Uniforms are replaced as well, as Starfleet
had recently changed its uniform design. - The Enterprise heads out into space again, beginning a five year mission to to seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone before. - The Borg destroy Guinan's home planet. A small number of Guinan's people, the El-Aurians, manage to survive by spreading themselves across the galaxy (TNG: "Q Who?"). - Dr. Leonard H. McCoy is assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise as ship's surgeon to replace Dr. Mark Piper (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "The Corbomite Maneuver"). |
2265, May |
- The Enterprise encounters a glowing cube in space. When
Kirk discovers that the cube will follow the ship or block its path,
he orders the cube destroyed. At this point, an enormous vessel appears,
and alien captain Balok declares that he will destroy the Enterprise
in minutes. Kirk bluffs his way out by claiming that all Federation vessels
have "corbomite"
aboard, which he will detonate if Balok threatens the crew. Balok attempts
to escape in an escape craft, but the Enterprise catches up and contacts
the real Balok - a representative of an alien race whose members, in adulthood,
look like human children. Lt. Bailey, whose emotional outbursts had been
disrupting the already fatalistic attitude on the Enterprise, agrees to
stay with Balok as an "exchange student" so he may learn more
about the diversity of life in the galaxy. - Diplomatic relations established with the alien Balok of the First Federation. |
2265, June |
- After stealing a freighter and pushing its engines to
their limits in an effort to escape the pursuing Enterprise, Harry Mudd
and his cargo - three seemingly irresistable women - are recovered.
Although Mudd can't help but be suspicious, the women follow his instructions
to cripple the Enterprise without any questions from the male members
of the crew. The dilithium crystals powering the ship are sabotaged,
and Mudd intends to force Kirk to bargain for his crew's life when the
Enterprise arrives at a dilithium mining outpost. - As a landing party surveys a planet, a transporter malfunction splits Kirk into an aggressive aspect and a timid one. The aggressive Kirk threatens the security of the ship and crew, while the passive one tries to maintain his sanity and ability to command. In the meantime, the cause of the transporter problems haven't been determined, stranding Sulu and the team in the planet's subfreezing night temperatures while the two sides of Kirk's personality fight for control of the Enterprise. |
2265, August |
- Visiting Professor Crater and his wife (who, before
marrying Crater, had a close relationship with McCoy), an Enterprise
landing party starts to fall prey to an unknown assailant that seems
to drain its victims of salt. Kirk is suspicious - and McCoy alarmed
- when the Craters refuse, in spite of the threat, to evacuate their
planet. The landing party returns to the Enterprise with an extra passenger
- a shape shifter who can assume the shapes of Enterprise crewmembers
and who has been living with Professor Crater in the guise of his late
wife, whom the creature killed. The creature, in search of salt, sees
the Enterprise as a promising hunting ground. (Date is conjecture,
based on the long held rule of thumb that Classic Star Trek took place
300 years after it was aired. By that basis, Man Trap, the first episode
aired, took place in September 2266, and serves as a reference point.) - A member of a landing party investigating the ruins on a collapsing planet contracts an unknown infection and returns it to the Enterprise, where it spreads rapidly by touch. Lt. Riley locks himself in engineering and shuts down the engines, which may be needed to get the ship away to avoid damage from the planet's impending destruction. Kirk slowly begins to lose control, and even Spock is affected by the infection, while the planet's final phase of collapse begins with very little warning. Time travel is first achieved by a Starfleet vessel - the U.S.S. Enterprise - in its escape from the gravity of Psi 2000. |
2265, September |
Charlie, a young boy who reportedly grew up alone with only computer banks for company and teachers, is picked up by the crew of a starship and is transferred to the Enterprise for a trip to a starbase. During the trip, Charlie begins to learn more about human relationships and becomes infatuated with Yeoman Rand. When she tells him that he is too young for her, Charlie is enraged and begins to do away with members of the crew who he feels have been condescending to him - including Captain Kirk. |
2265, October |
- Responding to distress calls from border outposts along
the Neutral Zone between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire,
Kirk and the crew receive a final message from a Federation station reporting
an attack from an invisible ship. Before the station is destroyed, it
sends the Enterprise a brief view of the attacking vessel - a streamlined
fighter which appears for a second when it fires. Hurrying to the scene,
the Enterprise engages in battle with a Romulan Bird of Prey, armed with
a cloaking device and commanded by a battle-scarred and tired commander
whose crew is more eager to go into combat than he is. The Romulans,
to the Enterprise crew's amazement, bear a stunning resemblance to Vulcans,
which arouses suspicion in some, including Lt. Styles, whose father died
in a battle with the Romulans years ago. But as long as the Romulan ship
can remain invisible, the Enterprise is at a disadvantage (The Lost Era: "The
Sundered"). - The Enterprise is en route to visit Dr. Korby, a brilliant scientist working in isolation who also happens to be Nurse Chapel's fiance. Kirk and Chapel beam down and discover that Korby has used abandoned technology left behind by an extinct civilization to create android companions for himself - one of which, an attractive and very user-friendly "girl," arouses Chapel's suspicions. Korby, however, has become deranged in his isolation, and wants to take over the Enterprise so he can populate the "inferior" organic universe with androids. |
2265, November |
- Kirk and ship's psychiatrist Dr. Noel visit a Federation
mental hospital as the Enterprise delivers supplies. But one cargo container
beamed aboard the ship contains an apparently insane stowaway from the
facility on the planet who isn't a patient, but the second in command
of the hospital's director, who has invented a device that can lock emotional
impulses in or out of the brain permanently and is apparently used his
invention without any discretion. Spock and the crew discover that Kirk
and Dr. Noel are trapped on the planet, and are probably the next victims
of the mind-altering machine. - A remarkably Earthlike planet is the home of a human-like civilization whose entire adult population was wiped out by a virulent disease. The children remain, although their growth has been slowed down to the point that Miri - a teenage girl found by Kirk and a landing party - could easily by 300 years old. Miri develops a crush on Kirk, but at the same time reports back to a gang of unruly children who plot to kidnap the landing party, beginning with Yeoman Rand. Kirk, Rand and even Miri begin to show signs of the disease, which gives Kirk a chance to prove that the disease will eventually kill all of the children - but they are unwilling to admit they need help or the "stuffy" advice of an adult. - Yeoman Janice Rand leaves the U.S.S. Enterprise. She will receive further Starfleet training and become a transporter chief aboard the refit U.S.S. Enterprise in 2271. Rand will later receive her commission and in 2290 she will serve as communications officer on the U.S.S. Excelsior under Captain Hikaru Sulu. |
2265, December |
- Kirk is contacted by Leighton, a friend from Kirk's stay
on the Tarsus IV colony years ago, who believes that Kodos the Executioner,
the militant dictator who gave the order for scores of people to die
on the colony during Kirk's stay, is at large once more in the guise
of touring Shakespearean actor Karidian, who, with his touring company,
has stopped over at Leighton's post for a performance. Kirk isn't convinced
until Leighton turns up dead, leaving Kirk and Lt. Riley the only remaining
living witnesses of the Tarsus IV massacre. To investigate further, Kirk
invites Karidian's company to travel on the Enterprise to their next
performance, and attempts on Kirk and Riley's lives begin immediately. - Kirk attends a Christmas party along with Dr. Helen Noel. (Dagger of the Mind) |
2266 |
- The Enterprise unwittingly spreads a computer virus
to five planetary systems. A "virtual" alien civilization is
discovered in orbit around Tyrtaeus. Rand is still aboard. (Heart Of
The Sun - TOS#83) - Yeoman Rand becomes pregnant and takes a leave from Starfleet. (The Captain's Daughter - TOS#76) - Ensign Ingrit Tomson signs aboard. (The Lost Years) - Kirk investigates the murder of a Draqqi diplomat. ("Avenger," Enterprise Logs) - Spock is promoted to full commander. Pike is kidnapped by Spock, who diverts the Enterprise to Talos IV without authorization. Spock's court martial is dismissed when Pike chooses to remain with the Talosians, who provide him the illusion of good health. [Note: According to Spock in the television episode "The Menagerie Part I," this is thirteen years after the incident on Talos IV. In "Journey To Babel," it has been eighteen years since Spock left home for Starfleet. Subtract the one year between the episodes, and we have only four years for young Spock to have received all his academy training, promotion to full lieutenant, and assignment as Second Officer aboard the Enterprise . This is incredible, even for a Vulcan; plus, it contradicts Spock's service record given in Dorothy Fontana's Vulcan's Glory. Fortunately, since the "thirteen years" figure never appears anywhere in print, we can ignore it in good conscience] - Jean-Luc Picard arrives on Cestus III two days before the events of "Arena." (Requiem - TNG#32) - A plague destroys a third of the Romulan population. (Web Of The Romulans - TOS#10) - Klingon battlecruisers destroy a Federation hospital ship, killing the wife of Captain Androvar Drake. (The Ashes Of Eden) - The Enterprise returns to Earth for shore leave. Kirk contemplates resigning from Starfleet. (Final Frontier) - Kirk resigns from Starfleet and returns to Iowa. ("Reflections," Strange New Worlds I) - The Enterprise is caught in the gravity well of a black hole while in warp. Chekov saves the ship by plotting a spiral escape course. ("Indomitable," Strange New Worlds VII) - Chekov assigned to the bridge crew. Uhura temporarily transfers to the U.S.S. Lexington. Rithrim mercenaries raid several planets in the Xaridian system. (The Disinherited - TOS#59) - A race known as the Furies arrive with an invasion force from the far side of the galaxy to reclaim Federation and Klingon territory, including Earth, which they claim was once a homeworld. (Invasion! #1: First Strike - TOS#79) |
2266, January |
- A shuttle commanded by Spock crash-lands on a savage
planet where members of the shuttle crew are in immediate danger from
the local life forms. The Enterprise must leave the area as soon as possible
to deliver a much needed vaccine to a plague-stricken planet, and Commissioner
Ferris insists that Kirk leave the Galileo crew for dead and get underway
to the Enterprise's next destination. Meanwhile, Spock faces a command
situation where total logic and rationality may be of no use if the crew
of the shuttle is to return to the Enterprise. - Kirk is accused of murder when the Enterprise's records officer, Lt. Commander Finney, is apparently jettisoned during a violent ion storm which threatened the ship. Kirk insists that he gave Finney even more time than safely allowed to get out of the jettisoned ion pod, yet the Enterprise computer's records show that Kirk discarded the pod, and Finney, while only at yellow alert when there was no sign of actual danger. Kirk challenges the findings of the computer and is court-martialed, with accusations that earlier rivalries with Finney when both were new officers caused Kirk to act maliciously - and even Kirk's attorney, Cogley, may not be able to convince the court that the error may have been the computer's. |
2266, February |
- The Enterprise is summoned to Starbase 6, apparently
by Captain Pike, who commanded the ship before Kirk. Commodore Mendez
shows Kirk, Spock and McCoy, however, that Pike was recently paralyzed
in an accident and could not have signalled the Enterprise. Spock creates
false messages from Kirk and sends them to the ship, instructing the
crew that Spock and Pike will beam up immediately, the Enterprise will
be piloted by computer to its next destination, and that Kirk will be
staying behind. Kirk and Mendez follow the Enterprise in a shuttle, which
runs out of fuel when Spock refuses to slow the Enterprise down so the
shuttle can come aboard. Spock finally allows Kirk to catch up and then
places himself under arrest. Kirk is unable to disconnect the computer
from the helm, and Spock's court-martial begins. Spock offers, as evidence,
visual records of a voyage on the Enterprise on which Spock and Pike
served 13 years earlier. The bridge then informs Kirk and Mendez that
the recording is being sent to the Enterprise from Talos IV - a planet
that, according to Starfleet regulations, is absolutely off-limits to
all vessels, punishable by death. - Spock reveals that the Keeper of Talos IV has control of the viewscreen and the evidence being presented. The screen shows the events that occurred during Pike's visit to Talos IV in great detail, but Spock has difficulty convincing Kirk and Mendez of the validity of what they are seeing as well as the tremendous power of the Talosians. When the evidence suddenly stops, Mendez orders Kirk and Pike, the ranking officers forming Spock's trial board, to make their verdict, and all find Spock guilty. The final part of the record of Pike's adventure then continues, and then Commodore Mendez vanishes from the Enterprise. The Keeper himself tells Kirk that the Mendez that accompanied him in the shuttle and the trial was an illusion projected from Talos IV, and that Pike is welcome to return to the planet and be restored, as Vina was, to his former strength and health. |
2266, March |
- McCoy recommends a layover so the crew can rest from
the constant strain of nonstop duties, and an earthlike but apparently
uninhabited planet provides a perfect opportunity for shore leave, but
when odd things begin happening on the surface, Kirk becomes suspicious.
McCoy, after telling Sulu that the planet is like a setting from "Alice
in Wonderland," spots a large rabbit followed by Alice herself.
Kirk runs into his old nemesis, Academy prankster Finnegan, while Sulu
discovers a police revolver that he doesn't have in his ancient firearms
collection and later runs into a Samurai warrior. Mysterious tracking
devices follow the crew's actions and thoughts, and whatever they happen
to be thinking of seems to become real - even if it's a deadly threat,
as McCoy discovers. - The Enterprise crew discovers that the ship cannot escape orbit of a planet that doesn't even exist on the star charts. Kirk and a landing party beam down to the surface of the mysterious planet and their captor is revealed to be the immature but powerful Trelane, who initially seems to be a student of ancient Earth history (as demonstrated by his 17th century mansion, clothes and furnishings). Kirk, discovering that Trelane's hold on the Enterprise comes from a power far beyond 23rd century technology, must try to beat Trelane at his own game, but Trelane rewrites the rules constantly to make sure he's winning. |
2266, April |
- Arriving at a Federation planet at the request of a
starbase director, the Enterprise finds a devastated world with only
one survivor, who reveals that any summons Kirk received to visit the
planet must have been a trap. The Enterprise locates and pursues an alien
vessel right past the borders of the apparently omnipotent Metrons, who
halt the ensuing battle and force Kirk and the captain of the other vessel
- a huge, reptilian Gorn - to settle their differences in hand-to-hand
combat...a prospect which immediately leaves Kirk at a disadvantage.
Should he lose, the crew of the Enterprise will be destroyed. - The Enterprise encounters brief but intense turbulence after entering orbit above an uninhabited world. Kirk leads a landing party to the surface to investigate any possible connection between the planet and the disturbance, and they find a man named Lazarus, who, though he seems healthy and normal, claims to be fighting his own equivalent from a universe of antimatter. Lazarus proves to be a threat to the Enterprise's security, and the increasing blasts of turbulence seem to confirm Lazarus's story that he has a powerful enemy in another dimension. |
2266, May |
- Accidentally swinging around the sun into a time warp,
the Enterprise's crew recover from their turbulent journey and find themselves
in Earth's atmosphere in the 1960s over North America. Jets are dispatched
to bring the "UFO" down, and one is caught in the ship's tractor
beam and begins to break apart. The pilot, Captain John Christopher,
is beamed out of his plane before it disintegrates and is welcomed to
the Enterprise as the crew prepares to return to the 23rd century. Kirk
tells Christopher that he cannot be returned to his own time because
he has seen too much of the future, but Spock discovers that Christopher
will have a son who will be very important to the history of the space
program and Christopher must be returned to 20th century Earth. - Sulu and another crewman are investigating a primitive but ancient-Earth-like alien culture incognito, but their disguise is blown and they're running for their lives. The Enterprise can't beam Sulu up in time, and he is hit by a weapon on the planet which leaves him under the control of something or someone called Landru. Kirk and Spock beam down, finding the planet's people engaged in unusual rituals, and also finding out from some of the locals that Landru has complete control over most everyone on the planet, aside from a small resistance effort. What begins as an effort to free the people on the planet becomes a matter of survival when Kirk and Spock become hunted by Landru's "puppets." |
2266, June |
The Enterprise visits the twin planets of Eminiar VII and Vendikar so Ambassador Fox may approach their governments about joining the Federation. When they beam down to Eminiar 7, Kirk, Spock and the rest of their landing party are informed that the Enterprise has been struck by enemy missiles and Kirk's party, along with the rest of the crew, have been declared casualties. Investigating further, Kirk discovers that the war between the two planets is controlled by computers, which determine the damage done and the fatalities caused by the attacks, and assigns citizens to report to disintegration machines, which they do willingly. Kirk is trapped on the planet, but Ambassador Fox thinks he can remedy the situation and beams down unarmed against Scotty's advice. |
2266, July |
The Enterprise discovers a derelict vessel which turns out to be an Earth ship dating back to a series of wars in the 1990s in which Earth's population was threatened by a group of genetically engineered superhuman beings. The inhabitants of the rogue ship, though they try to conceal the fact at every opportunity, are the only surviving oppressors from that war. Their leader, Khan, wishes to resume their reign of terror, beginning with a takeover of the Enterprise. Kirk exiles them to a lonely planet Ceti Alpha V. |
2266, August |
- Investigating a colony whose settlers should be, but
for some reason are not, threatened by radiation, Kirk and a landing
party beam down to investigate. McCoy diagnoses the colonists as being
in fine health and none of them wish to leave, no matter how much danger
they are in. Spock, with Leila, an old acquaintance who has a crush on
him, is infested by spores from a plant while examining the colony grounds.
McCoy also soon falls victims to the spores, which leave their victims
- even Spock - in a stupor with no desire to leave... and Kirk is left
with a ship and no crew. - A mining colony reports a number of mysterious deaths just after they successfully dig to a lower level of a planetoid believed to be uninhabited. The Enterprise arrives, and Kirk, Spock and security officers from the ship begin a hunt for whoever or whatever is responsible for the growing body count. An amorphous creature capable of burning through the indigenous rock is found to be the cause of the deaths as well as a very well-thought out sabotage of the miners' life support systems. Through a mind-meld, Spock communicates with the being - known as the Horta - and finds that it is the last of its kind, a mother laying eggs in the tunnels and caves it builds for itself. But the humans have been discovering and destroying the eggs, and if the Horta cannot bring herself to negotiate with the miners, one party or the other faces extinction. |
2266, September |
- A sudden attack by the Klingons on a vulnerable neutral
sector - a location of great strategic importance - puts the Enterprise
on red alert, as the threat of a catastrophic war between the Klingon
Empire and the Federation looms. Kirk and Spock beam down to Organia,
the planet whose security is at risk due to the Klingon threat, and find
that the inhabitants, who appear to be humans who have reached the medieval
period of sociological and technological development, are not at all
concerned that their world is currently being overrun by Klingon troops.
Kirk and Spock try to conceal their identities, but fail, leaving Kirk
and Klingon Captain Kor at each others' throats - until the Organians
reveal their true nature and intervene in the impending war. - McCoy accidentally receives an overdose of cordrazine as the Enterprise encounters turbulence. He beams down to an unexplored world where he enters a time-travel device known as the Guardian of Forever and changes history in the 1930s. Kirk and Spock also return to the 30s, where Kirk falls in love with peace activist Edith Keeler. When McCoy is finally located, Kirk must allow history to run its course, resulting in Edith's death, or he will leave history altered irrevocably, with no chance of returning to the future or the Enterprise. |
2266, October |
The Enterprise witnesses a smaller ship diving into the sun of Deneva under the control of a pilot who seems to have intentionally killed himself. This confirms Kirk's worst fears, that a seemingly contagious outbreak of insanity on several other worlds has spread to Deneva, where his brother lives. On the surface, many are found to be dead - including Kirk's brother - and an unknown species of alien parasite is found to be responsible. In trying to gather data on them, Spock is attacked and taken over by one, and, like the people of Deneva and several other planets, starts to go mad. Spock's condition also presents McCoy with the first opportunity to learn more about both the creature and its victim, and Spock may have to die if the crew is to learn any more about the creatures to prevent them from spreading further into human territory. |
2266, November |
- When a crewman from a landing party investigating the
latest planet visited by the Enterprise returns under some form of exterior
control and then dies, Kirk decides to beam down and see for himself
what caused the death. What Kirk, Spock and McCoy find on the surface
is a house of horrors right out of ancient Earth mythology, right down
to three hideous witches delivering a prophecy of doom for the crew.
Two aliens are found to be at the heart of the evil activities, and they
have no intention of letting Kirk or the Enterprise leave their world. - Taking Federation Commissioner Hedford back to the Enterprise's sick bay so McCoy can treat her for a potentially dangerous but curable ailment, the shuttlecraft containing Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Hedford is diverted by a strange energy field to a barren planet, inhabited only by Cochrane, who invented the basis for current warp engine technology decades ago and should be dead by now. Cochrane reveals, however, that an energy creature called the Companion has halted his aging process. The Companion is also concerned about Cochrane's psychological well-being, and Kirk and the others have been brought to keep Cochrane company - possibly for the rest of their lives. |
2266, December |
- The Enterprise rushes to an underdeveloped planet in
an attempt to stop Klingon intervention in the somewhat primitive society.
The Klingon Krag is trying to convince the planet's people that an alliance
with the Klingon Empire would be beneficial, and when Kirk breaks cultural
taboos - not to mention the prime directive - by interfering with a "routine" killing
and saving a pregnant woman, it becomes all too easy for Krag to point
out that the landing party from the Enterprise have only come to usurp
the planet's ways of life. - The Enterprise is trapped in deep space by an enormous hand. Kirk and a landing party beam down to a nearby planet and find that a powerful being claiming to be the Greek god Apollo is the one responsible for holding the Enterprise in its place - and Kirk discovers that Apollo's ability to immobilize a starship is just a small demonstration of the being's power. When Apollo demands that the crew worship him, Kirk decides that the mythical figure must be defeated - but must rely on playing with Apollo's emotions and weaknesses since the being can tamper with the Enterprise's technology. |
2267 |

2267, January |
Spock begins acting strange - even violent - as, unknown
to the rest of the crew, he enters the Vulcan mating phase that strikes
adult male Vulcans every seven years. Kirk must divert the Enterprise
from a tight schedule to return Spock to Vulcan so his mating ritual
may be carried out. But on arriving, it is discovered that Spock must
compete with a gladiator of his prospective mate's choice - and that
turns out, on the spur of the moment, to be Kirk. - The starship Constellation is found in deep space, almost completely destroyed. The only person found aboard is Commodore Matt Decker, in a state of shock and only able to give minimal details of what happened. A gigantic ship/creature suddenly returns, well over ten times the size of the Federation vessels, capable of literally eating entire planets to replenish is colossal energy needs. Kirk is trapped on the unarmed Constellation, while Decker takes command of the Enterprise and plans to exact revenge on the huge alien vessel, no matter what the risk to Kirk's ship and crew. - Kirk records a log entry concerning Matt Decker's death (The Brave And The Bold, Book One: First Interlude). |
2267, February |
- After suffering a head injury on the Enterprise, Scotty
is talking into shore leave with Kirk and McCoy. On the planet they are
visiting, however, a series of grisly murders of local women begins,
and all the evidence seems to point to Scotty. Kirk must contend with
the overwhelming evidence against Scotty as well as the overzealous local
constable, who is ready to have Scotty punished as soon as possible. - The Enterprise is attacked and boarded by the unusual space probe Nomad, which Spock identifies as the combined remains of an alien robot and an Earth exploration probe. Nomad's purpose - a confused mix of aliens' orders and instructions from Earth - is to seek out and sterilize all impurities, including imperfect beings like humans. The only thing preventing Nomad from obliterating the Enterprise and everyone on board is the similarity between the name of Nomad's creator and Captain Kirk, and Kirk must try to play that role as best he can while figuring out how to get rid of Nomad. |
2267, March |
- An Enterprise landing party beams down to an paradisical
planet, where Kirk discovers that the people living there are still primitive,
all progress held in check by an enormous ancient computer known as Vaal,
which also demands sacrifices of food by the natives. Vaal detects the
Enterprise in orbit and begins to drain it of its power, and Kirk realizes
that he will have to destroy Vaal to save the Enterprise, but the surface
dwellers' lifestyles will be changed forever if Vaal is removed. - Returning to the Enterprise from an unsuccessful mission to ask the leaders of a planet for a possible mineral trade, Kirk, Uhura, Scotty and McCoy are being beamed up just as a freak accident hurls them into another reality, which still contains a USS Enterprise and a Spock and a Federation, but the other reality's versions are cruel and inhumane - the crew the alternate Enterprise is readying for a strike against the planet Kirk just left to take their mineral resources by force. Kirk and his landing party must try to cover their inexplicable identities and try to fit in, while stopping the savage alternate Enterprise from carrying its reign of terror any further. |
2267, April |
- Conducting a survey of a planet, a landing party from
the Enterprise is contaminated with a form of radiation sickness that
accelerates aging. With the ship's entire command crew rapidly aging
and slowly losing their ability to perform their routine duties, Commodore
Stocker, who is aboard for a trip to his next starbase command, decides
he must question their competency and take the captain's chair as Kirk,
Spock and the others face an impending death of old age. - The Enterprise is taken over by Crewman Norman, who turns out to be an android in disguise. He sets the ship on a course back to his home world, a planet populated entirely by androids - and one Harry Mudd, trapped there after a crash-landing. The androids plan to move out beyond their own planet to populate the galaxy with more of their logical, efficient kind, and the Enterprise is their chosen means of transport. Kirk, although understandably suspicious of Harry, must now cooperate with the con-man if the android invasion is to be stopped. And the greatest weapon at the disposal of Kirk, his crew, and Harry is total illogic. |
2267, May |
- The Enterprise is summoned to space station K-7 for
security duty when the station's security forces are considered inadequate
to guard a shipment of valuable grain by the standards of Federation
agriculture administrator Baris. A shipload of Klingons stops off at
the station as well, which has all parties concerned even more about
the grain consignment. Kirk orders stepped-up security, but that only
results in some of the crew - including Scotty and Chekov - instigating
a massive bar brawl with the Klingons. All the while, the seemingly harmless
huckster Cyrano Jones is trying to peddle furry tribbles off to anyone
with a few credits, and Uhura buys one and takes it back to the Enterprise,
not knowing that tribbles do only two things: eat and breed. - The Enterprise crew members make the difficult decision not to retain any tribbles as pets ("Missed," Strange New Worlds IV). - Trying to track down the crew of the downed Federation starship Beagle, Kirk, Spock and McCoy arrive on a planet populated by a society that mixes savage ancient practices with 20th century technology. Enemies of the Roman Empire-like state are rounded up and forced to participate in televised coliseum battles. Kirk and Spock briefly encounter a peaceful group of people, but all are captured and prepared for their duels - including one event which will pit Spock against McCoy. Kirk must hope that he and his landing party can survive long enough for help to arrive from the Enterprise. - Odo, Worf, Sisko, O'Brien, Bashir, and Dax travel to the time period of "Trouble with Tribbles" to halt an assassination attempt on Captain Kirk by Ambassador Darvin, whom Kirk had exposed as a Klingon agent (DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations"). |
2267, June |
- Delegates from several worlds are welcomed aboard for
a trip to Babel where a Federation summit will take place, among them
Vulcan Ambassador Sarek - Spock's father, from whom he has been alienated
since childhood. Spock's human mother, Amanda, can't stop trying to bridge
the gap between her husband and son, while Spock and Sarek can't seem
to do anything but continue their rivalry. At the Babel Conference, Ambassador
Sarek manages to broker an agreement to admit Coridan to the United Federation
of Planets. Prior to the conference, the journey of the ambassadors to
Babel, aboard the starship Enterprise, was complicated by an Orion plot
to assassinate the Tellarite ambassador with agents disguised as Andorians. "Journey
to Babel" (TOS), 100 years prior to "Sarek" (TNG). - The Enterprise visits a primitive world where the Klingon Empire has armed one faction of people against another in hopes of eliminating the weaker population and allying the stronger warriors with the Klingons. Spock is seriously injured when he, Kirk and McCoy beam down, and is returned to the Enterprise for treatment as Kirk and McCoy try to make contact with the locals. Kirk is injured by an poisonous indigenous animal, but reaches, with McCoy's help, his old friend Tyree. Tyree's mystical wife Nona cures Kirk and then pursues him. Kirk and McCoy, in the meantime, may only be able to resolve the unfair advantage between the planet's two factions by arming Tyree against his people's Klingon-backed adversaries. |
2267, July |
- A landing party beaming down to the Enterprise's latest
stop is intercepted by a more powerful, long-range transporter beam,
which hijacks Kirk, Uhura and Chekov to the planet Triskelion, where
they are immediately handed over to various "trainers" to prepare
them for their upcoming duties as gladiators to amuse the powerful rulers
of the planet. Spock orders the Enterprise to warp to Triskelion to save
the landing party but doesn't realize that the powers-that-be on the
planet may want to lure the Enterprise crew there to provide them with
even more entertainment. - While a landing party is conducting a routine survey of a planet, two crewman are killed and one badly injured by a cloudlike being Kirk suddenly believes he has encountered before. It turns out that the creature attacked a ship that Kirk had been stationed on years before and killed most of the crew, and Kirk feels that he should have been able to do more to save his former crewmates. He transfers that guilt to the surviving landing party member, who not only is considered responsible by Kirk, but is also the son of Kirk's former captain on that previous assignment. Kirk orders the Enterprise to follow the creature through space, determined to kill it - at any cost - before it can take more lives. |
2267, August |
- Spock telepathically receives the collective death cries
of the entire all-Vulcan crew of the USS Intrepid, which has just been
destroyed by an unknown force. The Enterprise intercepts a gigantic organism,
which then surrounds the ship, beginning to cause physical and mental
illness among the crew. Kirk, Spock and McCoy surmise that this paradoxically
huge single-celled organism may be a "disease," as its course
will soon take it through inhabited star systems. The Enterprise may
turn out to be the only "antibody" capable of saving millions
from the onslaught of the enormous parasite. - The Enterprise encounters a planet recently visited by the "Horizon" and discovers that a book on the Chicago mobs of the 1920s accidentally left behind by a crew member of the previous ship has become the basis of the planet's society structure over 200 years of the planet's time (the starship having had warp drive). The intelligent but imitative inhabitants show a keen interest in replacing telephones with communicators and replacing tommy guns with phasers when Kirk, Spock and McCoy, along with their standard Starfleet landing party equipment - are captured. |
2267, September |
- The Enterprise responds to a distress call, finding
only a trap set by a small group of aliens from the Andromeda galaxy
who are assessing the potential of the Federation's home galaxy for colonization.
The aliens successfully take over the ship, reducing all aboard except
for Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty to dehydrated cubes so the ship's supply
of food and oxygen can be used by the hijackers and Kirk's command crew
for the staggering 300-year return to Andromeda. The aliens, having assumed
human form, also gain attributes such as emotions, which may be just
the weakness Kirk and the others need to attack to regain control of
the Enterprise. - The Enterprise visits a planet long thought uninhabited, and finds globes that contain the consciousness of the last survivors of the planet, Sargon, Thalassa and Henoch. The three remaining beings wish to "possess" the bodies of willing Enterprise crew members, leaving the crew members' minds in the globes briefly as Sargon and his companions use the human bodies to construct android bodies for their minds. Kirk, Spock, and Dr. Mulhall agree to this procedure, but Henoch, occupying Spock's body, has other plans than building an android frame for himself. In the meantime, Sargon and Thalassa, in the bodies of Kirk and Mulhall, fall in love all over again. One way or another, though, the humans' bodies must be vacated since their metabolism is incapable of withstanding the levels of activity taken on by Sargon and the others. |
2267, October |
- On arrival at Ekos, the Enterprise is the target of
a nuclear missile attack, a technology which didn't exist the last time
a Federation ship visited the planet. Kirk and Spock beam down to investigate,
discovering that the government on Ekos has been transformed into a Nazi
police state which came about when Federation teacher John Gill tried
to simply increase the efficiency of the government on Ekos. Gill is
now under the control of the people he has tried to educate, and anyone
who tries to reveal the truth about Gill or rescue him - including Kirk
and Spock - are hunted men. - Kirk is ordered to relinquish command of the Enterprise to Dr. Daystrom's new M-5 computer, which, according to Daystrom, can make all the decisions that a starship captain would encounter correctly and more quickly than any human. The Enterprise, with Kirk and a few others aboard, is engaged in Starfleet wargames, but the M-5 begins to treat the other ships as a serious threat and retaliates with full salvos of phasers and photon torpedoes, destroying one ship. Believing Kirk may have lost his mind, Starfleet gives the remaining ships permission to destroy the Enterprise. |
2267, November |
- The missing starship Exeter is spotted in orbit of an
inhabited planet. Kirk, Spock and McCoy board the Exeter, finding only
the remains of the crew, wiped out by a disease which likely affects
the boarding party now. Transporting to the planet, Kirk finds that Captain
Tracey of the Exeter escaped his crew's fate, and the atmosphere on the
planet is capable of eliminating the disease from the Enterprise landing
party's bloodstreams. But more problems arise as Tracey discards his
loyalty to the prime directive in an attempt to gain power in the planet's
government. - After warping back in time to the late 20th century (1968) for a glimpse of Earth's past, the Enterprise intercepts a mysterious man who simply calls himself Gary Seven. Although Gary and his ever-present black cat Isis appear like inhabitants of the 20th century, Gary knows what kind of ship he is on and recognizes Spock as a Vulcan, and ascertains that the Enterprise is from the 23rd century. Gary Seven evades security officers and resumes his journey to Earth. Kirk and Spock assume 20th century disguises and pursue him, finding that Gary is a time traveler from the future who is here to influence Earth's history - but whether or not his influence will be benign is another question altogether (Easter Egg: This episode was meant to introduce Gary Seven and his trustful aide Rebecca Lincoln (played by Teri Garr) as a later spinoff. The series was never picked up). - The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters a probe warning the ship to stay away from the space of the Melkot; the telepathic warning is heard in the native language of each Enterprise crew member. The Enterprise is under orders to establish contact with the reclusive Melkotians at all costs, so Captain Kirk orders a course farther into Melkot space. Kirk leads a landing party to the Melkotian planet, but they find themselves trapped in a foggy environment. A Melkotian says they will be punished for disregarding the warning, and they find themselves in an incomplete simulation of Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881, the day of the gun fight at the O K Corral. |
2267, December |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise enters the disputed Tellun star system -- near the
Klingon border -- on a top-secret diplomatic mission, and picks up Ambassador
Petri of the outer planet, Troyius, and approaches the inner planet, Elas,
to pick up Elaan, the Dohlman of Elas. The Troyian ambassador tells Captain
Kirk that the Dohlman of Elas is to be the wife of the Troyian ruler to bring
peace to the two warring planets, now that they have the capability to destroy
one another. Ambassador Petri must teach the disagreeable Elaan to be civilized
before they reach Troyius. - Captain Kirk leads a landing party to an Earthlike planet that is on a collision course with an approaching asteroid, and finds an advanced alien obelisk near a settlement of a primitive Native American tribe. Kirk accedentally triggers a hidden door on the obelisk with his communicator and falls inside, and the Enterprise crew must leave without him in order to alter the approaching asteroid's course. Kirk emerges from the obelisk with amnesia, and the native tribe believes he is a god. |
2268 |
- A Romulan colony on Chaltok IV is destroyed in
the explosion of a polaric power plant, leading to an interstellar ban
of polaric power (VOY: "Time and Again"). |
2268, January |
- The crew of the Starship Exeter undercover a rebel plot
on the Andorian homeworld. (This was a fan-created film called "Savage
Empire". The adventures of the Starship Exeter are not part of official
Trek - this entry is simply here to acknowledge its possible place in
the timeline) - Captain Kirk is showing increasing signs of stress. He orders the Enterprise through the Neutral Zone into Romulan space, where the ship is quickly surrounded by Romulans, now using Klingon ships. The Romulan ships are using a new cloaking device, which allows them to move without being detected by Federation technology. |
2268, February |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise crew responds to a distress call
from a science colony on Triacus, and finds Professor Starnes and the
rest of his team dead, apparently from self-inflicted injuries, but their
children are still healthy and happy. The children are taken aboard the
Enterprise, where we learn that are secretly following the orders of
an alien called the Gorgan. - The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters an alien ship with ion propulsion and unique technology; a humanoid woman appears on the Bridge and incapacitates the entire crew of the Enterprise. When the crew awakens, they find Spock's body with his brain surgically removed. The Enterprise follows the ion trail to the Sigma Draconis star system, where Kirk learns that Spock's brain is being used to control a computer complex, and provide for the primitive people living on the planet. |
2268, March |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise is assigned to convey the Medusan
ambassador to the Federation back to his home planet, whose formless
inhabitants are so hideous that the sight of one can bring total madness
to any human who sees one. Medusan Ambassador Kollos travels in a sealed
metal container so that no humanoids will see him, and is accompanied
by Dr. Miranda Jones, a human woman with telepathic abilities (Dr. Jones
was played by Diana Muldaur, who returned to Star Trek two more times.
Once as another character in a later episode, and as a regular during
TNG as Dr. Katherine Pulaski). - The U.S.S. Enterprise arrives at the second planet in the Minarian star system, whose sun is entering the nova phase, to evacuate a research station studying the dying star. Captain Kirk, Commander Spock, and Dr. McCoy beam down to the reasearch station and find it empty, before they are transported to an underground facility by alien Vians who are studying a mute empathic woman. |
2268, April |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise is searching for the U.S.S. Defiant,
which disappeared three weeks ago. The crew locates the missing starship
in an area of space that is phasing between dimensions. Captain Kirk
leads a landing party to the Defiant, and finds the crew dead, apparently
killed by each other. The Defiant phases out of existence while Captain
Kirk is still aboard, and members of the Enterprise crew become increasingly
agitated from the dimensional interphase effects. As the Enterprise waits
for Kirk and the Defiant to phase back into normal space, a Tholian ship
arrives and Commander Loskene claims the Enterprise is in a territorial
annex of the Tholian Assembly and orders the Enterprise to leave. - The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters an asteroid 200 miles in diameter, propelled by atomic power, that is on a collision course with Daran Five, an inhabited planet with a large population. McCoy, Kirk and Spock transport inside the artificial asteroid ship, and enecounter whose inhabitants believe they are on the world of Yonada. |
2268, May |
- Captain Kirk leads a landing party to planet Beta Twelve-A,
where a Federation colony has disappeared after signalling that it was
under attack. A Klingon ship arrives, also responding to a distress signal,
and is disabled by internal explosions. Kirk beams the surviving Klingon
crew over to the Enterprise, but the Klingon commander, Kang, blames
Kirk for attacking his ship. Unknown to the crew, an alien life force
is also beamed aboard. - The U.S.S. Enterprise answers a distress call from an unknown planet that is rich in kironide deposits, a very rare and long-lasting source of great power. The residents of the planet escaped from their native star, Sahndara, millennia ago, before it went nova; they call themselves Platonians, after the ancient Earth philosopher Plato, whom they met on Earth before coming to this planet to create a Utopian society based on ancient Greek civilization. |
2268, June |
- While exploring an outer quadrant of the Galaxy, the
U.S.S. Enterprise answers a distress call from a city on the planet Scalos;
Captain Kirk leads a landing party to the planet, but there are no visible
inhabitants in the city, and one member of the landing party vanishes
from sight after drinking some water on the planet. After beaming up
to the ship, Captain Kirk's coffee is infected with Scalosian water,
and he is shifted to the same level as the hyper-accelerated Scalosians,
who have secretly boarded the ship, moving faster than humans can see. - The U.S.S. Enterprise finds an unusual planet that has evolved an environment similar to Earth's in only a few thousand years. As Captain Kirk leads a landing party to the surface, the Enterprise is knocked 990.7 light years away, stranding the landing party alone on the planet. A projection of an alien woman appears on the Enterprise and kills two crewmen and sabotages the warp engines, and a projection of the same woman appears on the planet, attacking members of the landing party. The landing party destroys the computer controlling the projections, and learns that the planet is a Kalandan outpost, whose people all died from a disease produced when they created the planet. |
2268, July |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise is en route to decontaminate the
planet Ariannus, when it encounters a stolen Starfleet shuttle piloted
by an alien who is white on his right side and black on the left. The
alien, named Lokai, is from Cheron, an uncharted planet in the southern-most
part of the Galaxy. An alien ship with an invisibility sheath intercepts
the Enterprise and Bele -- chief officer of the Commission on Political
Traitors on the planet Cheron -- boards the ship, claiming that Lokai
was convicted of treason and escaped (An excellent episode that brought
home the stupidity of discrimination based on colour). - The U.S.S. Enterprise arrives at Elba Two, a planet with a poisonous atmosphere where the Federation maintains an asylum for the few remaining insane criminals in the Galaxy. Captain Kirk and Commander Spock beam down to the colony to deliver a new medicine to treat mental illness. They learn that the newest inmate is Garth of Izar, a former starship Fleet Captain, who has used Antosian shape-shifting techniques to take over the asylum. |
2268, August |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise arrives at the planet Gideon,
which is under negotiations for Federation membership, but has not allowed
any delegations from the Federation to visit or scan the shielded planet.
Captain Kirk has been invited to be the first Federation representative
to visit Gideon, but when he beams down, he finds himself alone inside
an exact duplicate of the Enterprise, where he meets a woman named Odona. - The U.S.S. Enterprise is en route to Memory Alpha -- a planetoid set up as a central library containing the total cultural and scientific knowledge of all Federation members -- with specialist Lt. Mira Romaine aboard to supervise the transfer of new equipment from the Enterprise to Memory Alpha. Lt. Commander Scott falls in love with Lt. Romaine. The Enterprise encounters an energy storm moving at warp speed that enters the ship and causes Lt. Romaine to collapse. |
2268, September |
- A botanical plague is threatening all vegetation on
Merak Two, and the U.S.S. Enterprise heads to another Federation member
world, Ardana, the only known source of zenite, which can halt the plague.
When Captain Kirk and Commander Spock beam down to the mine entrance
to pick up the needed zenite, they are attacked by a group of disgruntled
miners called Troglyte Disrupters. Administrators from Stratos -- a floating
city sustained by antigravity high above the surface -- drive off the
miners and offer Kirk and Spock their hospitality in the floating city
while the needed zenite is found. - The U.S.S. Enterprise is in pursuit of the stolen space cruiser Aurora, which is heading towards Romulan space. The Aurora's engines overload in the pursuit, and the Enterprise beams aboard its passengers, a group of pilgrims seeking the mythical planet Eden, including the son of the Catullan ambassador. |
2268, October |
- The U.S.S. Enterprise crew is infected with deadly Rigelian
fever, and Captain Kirk leads a landing party to a small planet in the
Omega system to find ryetalyn, the only known antidote to the fever.
On the planet, they meet a man calling himself Mr. Flint, who lives in
a castle shielded from orbital scans, containing an extensive collection
of original artwork, including several unknown da Vinci paintings, and
an original waltz by Johannes Brahms. Flint lives with a young woman
named Rayna Kapek, but the Enterprise can find no records of either of
them. - The U.S.S. Enterprise is scanning planet Excalbia, which has a molten surface and toxic atmosphere, but there are unexplained life signs detected. As the Enterprise prepares to leave, Captain Kirk is contacted by a duplicate of Abraham Lincoln, who invites Kirk and Commander Spock to an area of Earth-like environment on the planet. There they meet Surak, the founder of Vulcan civilization. |
2269, November |
- Three and a half hours before the star Beta Niobe is
calculated to go nova, the U.S.S. Enterprise scans Sarpeidon, the only
Class-M planet in the system. The crew finds the planet deserted, though
the planet did not have space flight capability. Captain Kirk, Commander
Spock, and Dr. McCoy beam down to a library on the planet and meet the
librarian, Mr. Atoz, and his android duplicates, who sent the world's
population into the past before the nova, using a machine called the
Atavachron. As Kirk is viewing records of a past era, he hears a woman
scream and runs into a portal to investigate; he finds himself in an
ancient city, where he is accused of witchcraft. Spock and McCoy run
through the portal after the captain, but find themselves trapped in
the Sarpeidon ice age. Soon after Spock and McCoy leave, Zarabeth gave
birth to his son, Zar. - The U.S.S. Enterprise responds to a distress call from a group of scientists exploring the ruins of a dead civilization on Camus Two; the leader of the expedition, Dr. Janice Lester, knew Captain Kirk when they were together for a year at Starfleet, but his world of starship captains doesn't admit women. When they are alone, Dr. Lester uses an alien machine on the planet to switch bodies with Kirk, and assumes his identity. - Enterprise recommissioned as Achernar class cruiser. Chekov temporarily transfers off the Enterprise. M'Ress and Arex sign aboard (TAS Launch). - Lorne McLaren is sworn in as President of the UFP. He is a former Starfleet Officer ("Articles of the Federation", "Last Unicorn Games"). |
2269 |
- Although not known to the U.F.P. at large, Star Fleet
begins to take covert actions against the Kzinti. This "hemming-in" will
lead to the Kzinti Incursion in three years, and will later have great
affect on Star Fleet's shipbuilding schedule. [SotF] - Experimental work with single warp drive nacelles and more than two nacelles yields quick confirmation that two is the optimum number for power generation and vehicle control. [NTM] - The Klingon D-7S "K't'mara" ("Bringer Of Justice") class cruiser enters service in the Klingon fleet. [FASA] - The K-22B "Bird of Prey" class scout enters service in the Klingon fleet. [FASA] - The U.S.S. "Potemkin" (NCC-1711) and the U.S.S. "Essex" (NCC-1727) have their "Daystrom" Duotronic computer systems upgraded to "Daystrom" Duotronic II. "Tektar" and "Conus" fire control and sensor systems are also installed on the "Potemkin"--replacing the "Stalt" defensive system. [SotF] - Dr. Daniel Corrigan and Sorel perfect nerve regeneration. [TOS #39] - The "Coventry" class frigate U.S.S. "Ashanti" (NCC-1237) is used as a test ship for the Mark IV "Emperor" series multi-directional phaser cannon. The single unit mounted above the ship's impulse engines will be tested until 2274. [SotF] - The Type 2 V-30 "Winged Defender" class cruiser enters service in the Romulan fleet. [FASA] - The Klingon D6 "IKV Gnasher" raids Rita's Planet in the Neutral Zone, massacring the Federation colonists. The U.S.S. "Kongo" (NCC-1710) arrives and rescues Burt Engels, the only survivor. While transporting him to Organia to testify against Commander Karml'r, the "Gnasher" attempts to intercept the "USS Kongo." - The Lyrans produce the first war cruisers and war destroyers; ship classes that will change the galaxy. - The Federation receives plasma 'F' torpedoes from the Gorns as part of Treaty of Algeron. These are only mounted on a handful of ships (DDLs and FFLs) for test purposes. - The Argonians, about to surrender to the Romulans, develop a tracking system which can accurately plot their plasma torpedo trajectories. The Phaser-P (plasma phaser) is equipped with this system, enabling the phaser to do twice as much damage to incoming torpedoes. This discovery turns back the invasion, and the following year the Romulans will call off the attack, ending the war. The Argonians will not let this technology slip into alien hands. - The "Kongo" (NCC-1710) enters a time warp and returns, having evaded the Klingons. [SFB] - The U.S.S. "Excalibur" (NCC-1705) heavy cruiser is relaunched after being converted to "Enterprise" specs. [SotF, HCE, FRS] - The U.S.S. "Hood" (NCC-1707) heavy cruiser is drydocked at Star Fleet Division, San Francisco Yards, Earth for conversion to "Enterprise" specs. [SotF, HCE, FRS] - The U.S.S. "Monson" (NCC-2392) "Chandley" class frigate is overtaken by four Klingon K-23 class destroyers in the Outlands Triangle. They board a captured Klingon ship which self-destructs killing two marine platoons aboard and the entire Klingon ship's crew. Because of this incident, Star Fleet policy states that before marines board any enemy vessel a complete scan must be made of the vessel to determine if the destruct systems are in operation. [FASA] - Star Fleet approves the designs of new Star Fleet uniforms: Class A (Dress), Class B (Duty), Class C (Special) and Class D (Supplement). [URM, SFD]The new Star Fleet uniforms consisting of a wraparound maroon tunic, with black pants and boots, are issued. These may initially serve strictly as dress uniforms for an unspecified period of time. The duty undershirt and collar are color-coded, matching the color of the departmental stripe on the sleeve: white for admiralty/command, green for medical, gold for engineering/operations, grey for sciences/communications, black for ship's services/security, and red for cadet/trainee (with a color bar). The departmental stripe on the left sleeve is bordered with gold piping except in the cases of cadets and midshipmen. Officers, cadets, midshipmen, and chief petty officers wear a stripe at the right shoulder (clasp on front, Federation symbol on the back) and the left sleeve (8 centimeters from the cuff). Enlisted men and petty officers usually have the sleeve stripe as well as rectangular tabs at each shoulder. The sleeve stripe of a cadet being red and containing a diagonal bar of color denoting the department they are studying. The sleeve departmental stripe bears pips and bars indicating (initially at least) service length within Star Fleet with gold pips denoting years served as an officer and silver pips indicating years served as an enlisted man in one and five year terms in conjunction with bars. In later years pips and bars may be used to indicate commendations and/or citations earned in Star Fleet rather than service length. Rank is represented by means of ten variants of specialized gold (and in some cases silver) pins worn on the right shoulder, replacing the traditional sleeve mark braid. These first-issue rank pins may eventually be altered or updated in time. Flag officers have gold edging on the uniform front flap and a Flag Assignment Stripe above the rank insignia on the left sleeve. Uniform insignias are simplified and uniform, consisting of the arrowhead shield (on all uniforms except Class C): a silver inlaid gold plaque behind the gold shield denotes an officer whether commissioned or petty, while a gold shield without a plaque serves to indicate crewmen, cadets, and midshipmen (at least in the early stages of this uniform series). By the early 2290s, enlisted personnel will be required to wear name tags upon their duty uniforms. This series of uniforms will be extremely long lasting, and kept in use through the early 24th Century with slight variations including alterations and elimination of the undershirt tunic. The wrist communicator may possibly be phased out during this era also. [ST II, ST III, ST IV, ST V, ST VI, TNG 241, TNG 259, TNG 163] - The U.S.S. "Farragut" (NCC-1702) heavy cruiser is relaunched after conversion to the "Enterprise" class configuration. [SotF, HCE, FRS] - The U.S.S. "Genser," along with five other escorts accompanying a convoy of neutronic fuel carriers to the rimward frontier, scans an unidentified object travelling on a parallel course. The "Genser" breaks away from the convoy to investigate and disappears. After several minutes the "Genser" reappears, maintaining its last course and speed but doesn't respond to radio calls. Sensor scans reveal that the entire crew had disappeared. The convoy is halted and searches are made but nothing is found to solve the mystery. The mysterious object had also disappeared. The U.S.S. "Genser" is later assigned to active duty in the rimward frontier areas. [FASA] - The Cardassians attempt to make common cause with the Bekiir (literally "badger" or "digfish"--extreme xenophobes from the Gamma Quadrant) against the Klingons, but the Bekiir destroy the 3 Cardassian ships sent as emissaries. The Cardassians decide to leave them alone. A Cardassian kulukmetal security box from this time (Uta Dul dynasty) bearing a directed energy weapon and a Bekiir time key is sealed with a force shield lock. A century later it will fall into the hands of Captain Square-Deal Djonreel, a Lonatian trader, and be directly responsible for the total massacre of Deep Space 9--in an alternate timeline. [DSN #5] - Chekhov returns to the Enterprise. Arex and M'Ress depart (Conclusion of TAS). - Kirk orders a quarantine of the Danon race. (Devil World) - The Enterprise investigates the planet "Anomaly." (Planet Of Judgement) - The Enterprise is abducted by the Organian Enowil. (Trek To Madworld) - The Arachnae system is prevented from slipping into the Romulan Neutral Zone. (Vulcan!) - The Dyson Sphere "Lyra" is discovered. (The Starless World) - Contact is established with an ancient Earth colony on Perry's Planet. (Perry's Planet) - The crew is infected by spores that enhance ESP ability. - The Interstellar Organian Concordium fleet decimates a
Gorn battlegroup and encroaches on Gorn space, in their first Alpha Quadrant
appearance. - The Federation scout "Bowie" (NCC-597) is disabled and drifts into Tholian territory, precipitating a crisis. - Ambassador Kosnett arrives aboard the U.S.S. "Kongo" (NCC-1710) to negotiate. - In the Lesser Magellanic Cloud, the Andromedan star base shimmers into existence, precipitating crisis amongst Alpha Quadrant races. - The Romulans attack and disable a spy ship carrying Federation officials on a tour of the border areas. ---The Romulans test new fighters against the Gorn. - This year, the Kaltic Freestates (Frax) become semi-independent of the Klingon Empire. The Klingon Northern Fleet is given to the Kaltics, who have a loose treaty with the Klingons for mutual defense against Kzinti aggression. The battle stations in the Kaltic Freestates belong to the Kaltics. The Klingons do not build additional Battle Stations south of the Frax (as this would dissolve the political fiction that the Kaltics are still part of the Empire). - The Rigellian Colonial Consortium, representing the Rigellian colonies is admitted to the Federation, provided that the slave trade on Rigel VIII (Orion) ends.[SFB] - The Bajoran wormhole again undergoes subspace inversion. [DSN 476] - The U.S.S. "Merrimac" (NCC-1715) heavy cruiser is relaunched as a "Constitution (II)" class starship. [SotF, HCE] - Limited AEGIS electronic warfare systems are deployed in Starfleet. - Light carriers, F-4 "Phantom" and F-8 "Crusader" fighters are all in service. The light carrier is a conversion of the galactic survey cruiser U.S.S. "Discovery" allowing it to carry F-4 "Phantoms" in an enlarged hangar bay. The first light carriers will also be used for the initial demonstrations of fighter/carrier technology to the Gorns. - As tensions begin to mount along the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone, one of the key areas of tension is the Adanerg system. Early in the year the Klingons decided to attempt to seize it with a minimum-force assault. The F5G commando frigate "IKV Korl" was sent to eliminate the Federation colony. The U.F.P., detecting the attack and wanting to respond with similar force, sent out the commando frigate U.S.S. "Kripney." After a fierce skirmish, the Klingons are forced to concede control of Adanerg to the Federation, at least for the time being. - Orion Pirate Lord Deth O'Kay II's Orion cruiser "Hammerfield" and another Orion Q-ship, attack U.F.P. convoys in clear violation of the 'Armed MErchantman." Concords. - The Tholians deploy a dreadnought by welding together the hulls of three patrol corvettes. - The Klingons launch the C8 'Voor'cha' class dreadnought on the Kzinti border, and the C9 dreadnought on the Federation border. While launched simultaneously, the C8 proves to be the better dreadnought, though the design is nearly the same as the C9, save for the C8 being armed with six drone racks instead of four, and having two extra defensive phasers The loss of the cargo bay on the C8 for extra firepower is accepted as satisfactory. - The Klingons also employ the Z-1 assault fighter for use against enemy ships. This is the first fighter fielded by the Zegurnii Design Bureau for starship combat, and will also be made available to the Lyran Star Empire (the Lyrans would field only Klingon fighter designs for many decades). The Z-1, code-named the "Zoran," will become infamous in reputation. The Klingon Empire converts several D6 K'Tinga cruisers battlecruisers into carriers. The D6V, unlike most other races fleet carriers, carries only 10 fighters in two bays. The Klingons will soon regret the 2 fighters the D6V lacked when the ship first sees combat against another carrier. - Commander Ardak Kumerian serves in the Imperial Deep Space Fleet. He destroys the Tholian 3rd Patrol Squadron after it forms the first Tholian Pinwheel, and is promoted to Commodore in charge of the Tholian Investigation Squadron, aboard his flagship "Darkslayer." - Ardak Kumerian leads a Klingon task force against Tholian Stronghold space. He is detected by the Tholians and soundly defeated. Kumerian is criticized for not sending the lower quality ships on the deception mission and using the better ships against the base. Thelvis Kren, an officer under Kumerian's command, starts an another incident with the Tholians which backfires, during this mission. Needing a scapegoat to quiet U.F.P. complaints, the Klingon Empire picks Kumerian. He is stripped of his position as Commodore, but allowed to keep the rank of Captain and is given command of his original ship, the D6 "IKV Destruction." The ship is sent to the Western Fleet on the Hydran border. Commodore Korath replaces Kumerian in command of the Tholian border squadron. - The Lyrans begin using Klingon Z-1 assault fighters. Over the next three years they will begin deploying Expanding Sphere Generator Capacitors (a spin-off of technology designed to make the Hydran Hellbore less effective against more resistant ESGs). - The Romulans continue to receive their first D7 battlecruisers from the Klingons, and begin operating the K7R on the Federation border. These operate as a single squadron under Romulan Commander Dion Charvon. It is from this squadron that Deth O'Key will manage the theft of a cloaking device. The Romulans attempt, with Klingon help, to ambush the Gorn heavy cruiser "Reptilicon" but the plan fails when Federation command cruiser U.S.S. "Lexington" (NCC-1703) shows up and intervenes. - The Andromedan Androids "Rattler" class attack ships are first spotted in the Milky Way. - The Klingons receive "Mauler" technology from the Romulans. [SFB] - The U.S.S. "Yorktown" (NCC-1704) "Constitution (II)" class heavy cruiser is recommissioned. [SotF, HCE] - The Klingon warship "Hakkarl" ("Vanguard," KL 1017), an uprated "K't'inga" class heavy battlecruiser (fully automated) is launched with Captain Kasak sutai-Khornezh in command, via a Klingon Bird of Prey scout ship, "Tazhat" (IKV 1018). The renegade Klingon heads for Dekkanar (4725 Cancri IV) to trigger a war--and is destroyed by the "USS Enterprise". [TOS #48] - The Kzinti Incursion: forces from Kzin attack Tau Ceti and begin a 6-week offensive action against U.F.P. forces. Admiral Kirk, aboard the U.S.S. "Enterprise" (NCC-1701), commands a large task force against the Kzinti and employs the "Zetarian Squeeze" maneuver to force the enemy fleet into a neutron star. The starships "Astrad" (NCC-1739) and "Alfr" (NCC-1741) track down and capture the Kzinti patriarch's flagship. By September the Kzinti are defeated, after 11 Class 1 starships and dozens of Kzinti vessels are lost. [SotF, FRS, SotF2] - The "Hornet" (NCC-9700) class fighter-carrier is instrumental in the liberation of the home worlds of the Tellar system (61 Cygni) during the Kzinti Incursion. This class of ship was built to quell the rising tide of outlaw activity in the Orion star system and the Deneb/Rigel commerce zones. Built to be manned by a 50% Rigellian crew, these ships have a higher deck height and increased oxygen atmospheres. The "Hornet" is also unique for possessing no secondary hull but instead a sensor/ deflector platform attached to a fractional primary hull disc--the predecessor of the late 2280s' "Akula" class perimeter action ship. "Hornet" class fighter-carriers deploy 10 "Hornet" class (warp 3 capacity) fast attack craft to track Orion smuggler ships into asteroid field bases (the predecessor of "Killer Bee" assault craft) and with their own warp 8 capacity speeds and complements of 172, they are formidable starships. Ten vessels comprise this class (NCC-9700-NCC-9709) and each is armed with 10 phaser emplacements and 2 photon torpedo tubes. [STD2] - The Duotronic III series computer system is developed. [HCE, SotF] - The Klingons relinquish their claim to Arcanis IV. [DSN 498] - This is the era of the rise of the Crescent Order in the Cardassian Empire. ("Night Whispers," Enterprise Logs) - The refitted Enterprise encounters a huge cloud heading for Earth. Lt. Ilia is absorbed by the entity calling itself "V'ger" and returns as an android. "V'ger" turns out to be a machine built for the sole purpose of seeking for the Creator of their distant relative, the space probe Voyager 6 that was launched from Earth a long time ago. V'ger, in the form of Ilia, and the Creator in the form of Capt. Decker finally merge into a new lifeform ("Star Trek: The Motion Picture"). - The Enterprise undergoes a brief shakedown cruise. (Wagon Train To The Stars - TOS#89) [Note: The text gives the year as 2272, and the cover blurbs support this date by placing the "New Earth" series shortly after the V'ger incident. However, the details of the story clearly support a much later date: Spock is a captain, Kirk is an instructor, the Enterprise is a training vessel, Chekov is about to be transferred, etc. Furthermore, the uniform alterations would not occur so soon after the change in ST:TMP. Nonetheless, we must contend with several problems, including the whereabouts of Sulu's daughter and the fact that Chekov hasn't yet received the promotion to First Officer of the Reliant as mentioned in Deep Domain.] |
2276, November |
Onset of the Second Romulan War. (Rihannsu #4: Honor Blade - TOS#96) |
Prior to 2277 |

Chekov is offered assignment as First Officer of the U.S.S. Reliant. Kirk decides to become an instructor at the Academy. The Enterprise is recommissioned as a training vessel under command of Spock (soon to be promoted to Captain). (Deep Domain - TOS#33) - Sulu meets his daughter Demora following Ling Sui's death. He refuses assignment as First Officer of the Bozeman, and instead becomes an instructor at the Academy. (The Captain's Daughter - TOS#76 - Ch. 15-17) - Launch of the U.S.S. Bozeman under Captain Bateson. Kirk temporarily takes the Enterprise out of the Academy training program to investigate a Klingon incursion into Federation space. The Bozeman disappears into a temporal distortion. (Ship Of The Line - Ch. 1-5) - The U.S.S. Bozeman disappears in what turns out to be a temporal rift in the Typhon Expanse (TNG: "Cause and Effect"). - The U.S.S. Presidency. ("A
Piece Of The Pie," Strange New Worlds VI) - The Orion Issik reaches parity with the Federation Uni-Credit, and the black market 'Outlands' market dries up for the former privateers. - Kirk accepts an offer to return to the Enterprise and lead the 72 vessels of the Belle Terre colonial expedition on a nine-month journey to Occult IV. Captain Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew agree to join the mission. (Wagon Train To The Stars - TOS#89) |
2280, March |
Toshiro Czierniewski, the Assistant Secretary of Technology in 2380, is born (Articles of the Federation). |
2281 The Organian Peace Ends... The General War Begins. |
- Assuming the 7-year cycle has not been disrupted since
2267, Spock should be experiencing pon farr symptoms at approximately
this time.[TOS] - Kirk meets Demora Sulu, Hikaru's daughter, for the last time before 2293 ("Star Trek: Generations"). - The Organians disappear or withdraw. Several races are blamed for this but no one know the true situation. In any case, their enforcement of the Klingon Neutral Zone ceases. - Admiral Kirk retires from Starfleet. (conjecture based on Star Trek Generations) - The Belle Terre expedition is attacked by an alliance of two local races—the Kauld and the Blood—along with Orion pirates under direction of a renegade colonist named Billy Maidenshore. (Wagon Train To The Stars - TOS#89) - Following the colonization of Occult IV, nearly half of the planet is obliterated by a release of pressurized quasar olivium within one of its moons. (Belle Terre - TOS#90) - A conspiracy to flood the Belle Terre colony with olivium is discovered by Sulu and Uhura. (Rough Trails - TOS#91) - Chekov transfers to the U.S.S. Reliant as First Officer. The Kauld attack Belle Terre with an olivium-powered laser constructed on a comet. (The Flaming Arrow - TOS#92) - John Harriman graduates Starfleet Academy. His father, Blackjack Harriman, is a rear admiral by this time ("Serpents Among the Ruins," The Lost Era). - The USS Hunley is attacked by the Romulans ship Daami while rescuing the Dakota after having drifted into recently claimed Romulan territory. Most of the senior staff is killed, including Captain Linneus when the bridge dome is blown. John Harriman takes command and defeats the Daami by beaming onto its Bridge and capturing the senior crew, including Aventeer Vokar ("Serpents Among the Ruins," The Lost Era). |
2281, July |
- Admiral Randolph Morrow informs all Star Fleet vessels
that "According to information obtained by the highest levels of Star Fleet
Command, the race of energy beings referred to as the Organians have ceased
their enforcement of the Organian Peace Treaty." Apparently, the Organians
will no longer intervene in any actions between the Federation and the
Klingon Empire, which means that interstellar war is again possible. [FASA] - The Klingons decide to be masters of their own fate rather than wait and see what fate the U.F.P. will provide for them and declare war on the Federation opening the Third Klingon-Federation War. They attack U.F.P. outposts, swiftly destroying border stations and driving the Federation back 2,000 to 3,000 parsecs by the end of 2282. The savage battles of the doomed border forces, including the cruiser U.S.S. "Hood" (NCC-1707) and the Ghostlight fighter squadron are legendary. - The Federation is able to bring the 4th (Kzinti border) and most of the 5th (Gorn border) Fleets into action, but raids by Romulan "privateers" (which will escalate through 2282) keep the powerful 6th Fleet tied down. Federation counterattacks are local affairs, and their own Operation Hydra (a drive to reach Hydran space and help the Hydrans get back into the fight) destroys one Klingon battle station before being badly defeated and forced to retreat. Most of the survivors of this expedition are trapped at Starbase 15. - The Orions declare neutrality. - The Klingons are, however, able to penetrate Federation space and send Ambassador Thad Vak Kaleen to the Romulan capital to discuss their alliance. Some speculated that the successful arrival of Kaleen on Romulus is the most significant and far-reaching event of the year. - The Lyrans, not particularly happy with the developing strategic situation, recognize that it cannot be helped and take over most of the Kzinti and Hydran fronts as well as sending a squadron to the Federation front. - The newly-formed Klingon Northeast Fleet drives into the Federation-Kzinti border area, destroying the Kzinti starbase there but fails to destroy the Federation starbase as well. While this operation does succeed in tripling the length of travel between the U.F.P. and Kzinti capitals, it does not completely sever that length, and the combat power expended here comes from that which had been assembled for a final attack on the Kzinti home world, an attack that never happens. - Many tactical battles will be fought in Hydran space through 2295, but the Hydrans will never again be seen as a strategic threat. At one point, the Romulan squadron led by Admiral Roxanna Vulpes will be deployed to this theater, resulting in the tiny handful of historical Romulan-Hydran battles. The Romulans will remain only a few months, despite having originally been assigned to remain there for at least two years. [SotF2, SFB] |
2282 |
- Kirk, staying at his uncle's farm in Iowa, meets Antonia. The two fall
deeply in love. (eleven years before the 23rd century segment in Star Trek
Generations) - A plague of nanoprobes infect the Belle Terre colonists with a deadly siliconic gel. (Thin Air - TOS#93) - The cruiser Peleliu arrives at Belle Terre to relieve the Enterprise but is destroyed by Kauld warships. The colonists construct a new ship, the Challenger, using components from other colonial vessels. Following the surrender of the Kauld and the apprehending of Maidenshore, the Enterprise returns to U.F.P. space. (Challenger - TOS#94) - McCoy learns from his grandson Conner, age two, that his ex-wife Jocelyn had remarried and joined the diplomatic corps. (Shadows On The Sun) - A representative from Sigma Iotia visits Kirk at his home to pay him his "piece of the action." ("A Little More Action," Strange New Worlds IV) |
2283 |
- Somehow the Federation hangs on, although the fleet assembled
to relieve Starbase 15 has to be sent to stop the Romulans instead. Starbase
15 falls to an assault by the 3rd Klingon Marine Division. With what's left
of the economy on full wartime production, the shipyards produce new fleets
to replace those lost and the front line is stabilized less than 2,000 parsecs
from Earth. [SFB] - The Enterprise is (again/still) under Kirk's temporary command, conducting routine missions and training cruises. Lt. Saavik is aboard under Spock's tutelage. (Dwellers In The Crucible - TOS#25) - Demora Sulu visits Starfleet academy, where Hikaru is teaching a course in astronavigation, and briefly meets Saavik, Boothby and Admiral Kirk. (The Captain's Daughter - TOS#76 - Ch. 18-19) - At age 20, Tuvok is accepted to Starfleet Academy. (Pathways - VOY - Ch. 14) |
2283, March |
- The Kargon Incident: A U.F.P.
outpost located in the Orion sector of space is attacked by a group of
six Klingon D-18Bs, commanded by Captain Kresz sutai-Kargon. The U.S.S. "Kongo"
(NCC-1710) accompanied by two "Loknar" class frigates, the U.S.S. "Halk"
(NCC-2742) and U.S.S. "Rome" (NCC-2726) respond to the outpost's distress
call. The ships arrive too late to save the outpost, but not too late to
engage the Klingons. Detecting only three ships on sensors, one with severe
damage and the others with minor damage, Captain J.C. Fredriksen of the
"Kongo" orders the frigates to close with the Klingons and demand their
surrender. In the meantime, the "Kongo" approaches the D-18 lying dead in
space. As the "Kongo" nears the vessel, sensors pick up three ships coming
out of warp to the rear and the systems aboard the dead ship coming to life.
The damaged D-18 destructs with such tremendous force that the "Kongo's"
starboard nacelle is ripped from the hull and the port engine is damaged
beyond repair. The incoming D-18s fire into the burning wreck of the "Kongo"
and complete the deed their comrades had begun. The "USS Halk," also taken
by surprise, never has a chance to return fire and the first volley of shots
from the oncoming D-18s totally destroy the frigate. The "USS Rome," however,
opens fire on one of the disabled D-18s and scores two photon torpedo hits
on its bridge and numerous phaser hits to its engines. Turning on the other
disabled D-18, the "Rome" begins firing as fast as it can, scoring hits
with every shot. The D-18s rushing in from their attack on the "Halk" fire
in unison, and the "Rome" suffers the same fate as the other two Star Fleet
vessels. News of this attack reaches Star Fleet three days later when a
communications marker from the "Rome" is retrieved. - The U.S.S. "Tori" (NCC-1725), "Lafayette" (NCC-1720), and "Wasp" (NCC-1721) defeat the Klingon hunter-killers "K'chss" and "K'utuul" during the Taal Tan Offensive at Linze: Klingon attacks upon U.F.P. merchant ships. This substantial increase in Klingon activity leads to the construction of additional frigate-type starships by Star Fleet: the pacifist bloc falling out of favor with the Offensive having shaken the Federation Council. [SotF, SotF2] - Lars-Eric Valdemar becomes Federation Commissioner of the Star Fleet Division, signifying Council support for a program of Fleet rejuvenation. He will approve a number of incentives for re-enlistment, increase acceptances to the Academies, and make moves to improve morale. - Total U.F.P. membership as of this year is 459. - The Harland Ellison Research Outpost is established on the Time Planet (Gateway) in order to study the Guardian of Forever. After some 8 years of conversing with the stone gateway, the Guardian will mysteriously cease to respond to questions in 2291. - "Constitution (II)" class heavy cruisers begin to have their computer systems upgraded to Duotronic III variants on an individual ship basis. [SotF] - An attempt is made to salvage the Transwarp Drive Project by pairing it with the Space Control Ship Project. This results ultimately in the U.S.S. "Excelsior" (NCC-2000) class space control ship. With the Koeller UTI K27 transwarp engines, a maximum warp of 17 is achieved. The transwarp drive will be unofficially placed back on the research and development status in the next few years. [ECP, NTM] |
2283, August 26 |
In the fall of this year, the Klingon-Romulan Coalition offers the Federation "an honorable peace" which would result in "demilitarization" of the Federation's outer provinces (which would then be policed by Coalition "peacekeeping" patrols). After much debate, Federation Council Chairman Buckner wins a motion to accept the offer by a single vote. |
2284 |
- [?] Artrin na Yel is elected Magistrate of Triex. He will serve in this position for 90 years (Articles of the Federation). - Dr. Carol Marcus begins her officially funded work on the Genesis Project ("Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan"). - In a victory for the Federation Diplomatic corps, the Gorns join up with the U.F.P. although little changes except for the length of the front line. - The Romulans pull forces out of U.F.P. territory to defend against an expected Gorn attack. - The First General War has now reached virtually complete escalation. The Grand Alliance (Gorn-Federation-Kzinti) fleets battle Romulan-Klingon-Lyran Coalition fleets. The Hydrans have co-belligerant status with the Grand Alliance, but are not formal allies. - The Orions begin operations against the Grand Alliance, using unprecedented numbers of ships. Over the next year, the war rages back and forth across the "devastated zones", the area of U.F.P. territory within 3,000 parsecs of the original border. Occasional Alliance raids will reach the fringes of Coalition territory. - The Orion Pirates sharply increase their raids (and the combat power of their ships) during this period. - The Klingons and Romulans launch several raids on the Federation home worlds but never make a serious attempt to capture them. A faction of the Kzinti government attempts to negotiate a separate peace with the Klingons this year, and the "Admiral Kang" sets out on its most exciting voyage. However, this effort collapses when a "palace coup" by the Patriarch himself eliminates the defeatist faction. This is the nadir of the Grand Alliance; from this point on cooperation between the major Allies increases steadily. - This period of the War (The Days of the Devastated Zones) is known for a series of unusual incidents and battles, including: - The famous mutiny on the IKS Demonslayer. - The rescue by Commodore Radley of a Federation squadron trapped in stasis fields. - The mutiny of an entire squadron of Klingon ships from the mothball reserve fleet. - And (perhaps the most unusual incident of all) the wild battle around the Orion station known as Mad Jack's Hole. - The U.F.P. gains steadily in the overall balance, and the Coalition gradually loses the ability to control the conduct of the war. The initiative reaches parity when the Hydrans, with a new shipyard fully operational in the Old Colonies, begin launching a series of major assaults on the Lyran "Firewall" bases leading to "The Battle of the Line" that exhausts the combatants to a sputtering stalmate. Hostilities flare up whenever one ofthe combatabnts can afford the gesture. [SFB] - Kirk returns to Starfleet. He moves back to San Francisco from Iowa. (date is conjecture based on Star Trek Generations, Star Trek II) - Saavik works with Torias Dax on the Transwarp development project. Torias is killed when the shuttle Infinity attempts the first test flight. ("Infinity," The Lives Of Dax) - Sarek and Amanda learn of Spock's death. (Sarek - Ch. 12) - Joran Dax is found to be a serial murderer and is killed by one of his potential victims. The Trill Symbiosis Commission covers up all evidence that Joran Belar was ever joined. ("Allegro Ouroboros In D Minor," The Lives Of Dax) |
2284, March |
- Kirk's 51st birthday. His son, David Marcus, is twenty.
(Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan) - Khan Noonian Singh, driven by his revenge on Kirk who dropped him on a lonely planet, steals the U.S.S. Reliant (NCC-1864) on a survey mission near Ceti Alpha V. In the course of a fierce battle, Spock sacrifices himself to save the Enterprise from the imminent explosion of the Genesis device. The Genesis Device is prematurely activated, following a space battle between the "Enterprise" and the commandeered "Reliant." The latter vessel is destroyed and the former is severely damaged. In the future, the "Reliant's" name will be honored by having a residence hall at the Star Fleet Academy named for her. The Genesis planet is created from the Mutara Nebula. [ST II] ("Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan"). - Captain Spock mindmelds with Dr. McCoy, transferring his Katra to the doctor. Spock dies in the line of duty from radiation poisoning while manually repairing the main energizer needed to power the warp engines of the "Enterprise" and escape the detonating Genesis Device. [ST II, ST III] - David Marcus struggles to accept the knowledge that James Kirk is his father. ("Prodigal Father," Strange New Worlds IV) - Sarek and Amanda learn of Spock's death. (Sarek - Ch. 12) [ Note: The text gives the date of March 14, 2285. The Genesis Wave dates Spock's death on March 26, 2285. The conflicts are unavoidable. Kirk was born March of 2233, TWOK stated his age as 51, which places it in 2284. It is highly unlikely it would be a year before Spock's parents were notified of his death given the status of Sarek on the Federation Council as per the influence shown in STIV.] - Admiral James Kirk, in direct violation of Star Fleet orders, takes the "USS Enterprise" to Genesis in order to get hold of Spock's body to save his katra (soul). The crew returns to Genesis, but the battle-damaged ship is ambushed by a Klingon "Bird of Prey" scout commanded by Captain Kruge, also responsible for the destruction of the U.S.S. "Grissom" (NCC-638) superscout/survey vessel. To avoid the capture of the ship by the Klingons, Kirk has to destroy the Enterprise. The Klingons kill Kirk and Carol Marcus' son, David, but Spock can be saved and his mind is reintegrated into his body ("Star Trek: "The Search for Spock"). - The "Enterprise" departs the Mutara system to pickup the crew of the "Reliant" marooned on Ceti Alpha V. [ST II] - The "Enterprise" is self-destructed upon encountering Kruge dies in combat, and the Genesis planet breaks up into an asteroid belt. Admiral Kirk and his officers capture the Klingon scout ship intact, recover the Genesis Wave regenerated Captain Spock, and spend the next three months in exile on Vulcan. Maltz, one of the Klingon officers taken into custody, will help the Federation Scientific Research Council in the preparation of 'The Klingon Dictionary'. - Prior to its destruction, the Enterprise computer ponders its own sentience. ("Countdown," Strange New Worlds IV) - Joran Dax is found to be a serial murderer and is killed by one of his potential victims. The Trill Symbiosis Commission covers up all evidence that Joran Belar was ever joined. ("Allegro Ouroboros In D Minor," The Lives Of Dax) |
2284, November |
Hiram Roth, human male, is sworn in as President of the UFP ("Articles of the Federation"). |
2285 |
- Grand Nagus Zek of Ferengal takes his last vacation for 85 years (DS9: "The Nagus"). - Demora Sulu stays with Janice Rand during her father's exile on Vulcan. Rand transfers to Starfleet Command. (The Captain's Daughter - TOS#76 - Ch. 20-21) - A probe from deep space arrives at Earth and broadcasts a message toward the oceans, threatening to destroy the planet when there is no response ("Star Trek: The Voyage Home"). - Jo Stern is born. She will later serve as Chief Medical Officer under Rachel Garrett on the USS Enterprise-C ("Well of Souls," The Lost Era). |
2286 |
- Shortly after the destruction of the Genesis Planet, Star
Fleet disposes of its entire supply of protomatter. Admiral Drake is able
to produce records proving that all of the supply is accounted for. The
Genesis Investigation Committee concludes that David Marcus had obtained
protomatter from outside of the Federation, possibly the Klingons. [GN
20]
- Kiltarc zantai-Neygebh, Klingon Ambassador to the U.F.P., arrives on Terra. He meets with a select committee of Federation Council members, ranking Star Fleet officials, and Federation Supreme Court Justices. Describing Admiral James T. Kirk, in his role in the Genesis Project, as a pirate and interstellar criminal who has recklessly endangered peace in known space, Kiltarc demands that Kirk be turned over to the Klingon Diplomatic Corps to stand trial in the Klingon Empire for his crimes. The Federation Council President responds that if Kirk is going to stand trial anywhere, he will do so within the Federation and under Federation jurisprudence. At the moment, however, Kirk is immune to prosecution while receiving political asylum from Ambassador Sarek on Vulcan. [ST IV, FASA] - Before his death, Imperial Security Officer Karamark vestai-Treth secretly transmits a copy of the Genesis data obtained by Kruge to his superiors on Klinzhai. [FASA] - When an alien probe on the search for the extinct humpback whales threatens Earth, Kirk and his crew travel to the past in a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. They find two whales in the Cetacean Institute in Sausalito and after some problems with 20th century customs and technology, they manage to take the whales with them ("Star Trek: The Voyage Home"). - Scotty assists Dr. Gillian Taylor in attempting to determine why the whales George and Gracie have fallen ill. ("Scotty's Song," Strange New Worlds IV) - With the assistance of Koloth, Kirk and Sulu rescue the remaining survivors of the Gagarin from a Klingon prison camp. Gorkon becomes Chancellor of the Klingon High Council. (In The Name Of Honor - TOS#97) - Kirk buys a log cabin on Earth with his girlfriend, Antonia, whom he had met two years earlier. After considering retirement, he decides instead to return to Starfleet. (Star Trek VII: Generations) - Spock's illogical brother Sybok seizes control of the Enterprise and with his telepathic abilities he influences the crew except for Kirk, Spock and McCoy to head for the center of the galaxy where he believes is the planet Sha-Ka-Ree. At their arrival the landing party is received by a strange being that claims to be God. The Piercing of the Great Barrier at the Galactic Rim proves that it is not the same as the interdicted Galactic Barrier.("Star Trek: The Final Frontier"). |
2287 |
- The Lornak clan of Acamar III kill all but five members of the Tralesta,
ending a blood feud that had lasted for 200 years (TNG: "The Vengeance Factor"). - Kirk's dog, a Great Dane named Butler, dies ("Star Trek: Generations"). - The U.S.S. "Thoth" (NCC-26302) Mark II "Reliant" class cruiser enters service. - With the front line stabilized and the Federation economy churning out new ships faster than the Coalition can kill them (and the Coalition economy just beginning to falter), the Federation goes on the strategic offensive. Knowing full well that any offensive would have to be limited in scope and focused on a specific and valuable objective, Star Fleet Command decides on a drive toward the Tholians to separate the Klingons and the Romulans. Such a move would divide the Coalition (preventing them from moving supplies and ships back and forth), make optimum use of the U.F.P.'s interior lines, draw ships from both the major Coalition powers away from the badly damaged Federation Allies, reduce the effectiveness of the Romulan KR class ships by cutting them off from spare parts they could not supply themselves, and ultimately allow the Alliance to force a separate peace on the Romulan Star Empire. The Federation drive, called Operation Wedge, is coordinated with a Hydran assault on the Lyran Firewall bases and with a Gorn feint at the Romulan home worlds. - One of the most spectacular Hydran failures takes place at this time when a Hydran squadron, trapped with its back to a gas giant, is cut to ribbons by Klingon forces. - The Tholians are fiercely neutral, despite several minor Coalition attacks on their borders, will in effect move the edge of the galaxy closer to the Federation start lines. - The neutralized Orion cluster will, under the right circumstances, return to full membership in the Federation, allowing a bloodless conquest of one-third of the necessary distance to the Tholian border. Several alternative operations for the first Federation strategic counter-offensive (as opposed to the numerous local counterattacks) are considered and rejected. Ultimately the plan succeeds. Strong drives knock out key Klingon and Romulan bases, and a swift maneuver encircles the Orion enclave and forces them (although not the pirate fleet) to return to the Federation. The second stage of the drive in the fall of this year reaches the Tholian border, and the Tholians tentatively accept a "friendly power" status just short of an outright alliance with the Grand Alliance. They will not allow U.F.P. ships into their territory. Throughout the year there are continual operations along the front line between the Federation and the Klingons and Romulans. In one such battle, a Klingon fleet launches a deep raid behind Federation lines but are barely able to escape after their frigate squadron (the deepest penetrating unit) gets trapped and annihilated. - There is also a brief attempt by one Romulan commander (Admiral Tiercellus) to negotiate a separate peace (not for the Romulans; just for his fleet) with the Gorns. Alliance historians will regard this as a false effort used to trap a key Gorn warship, but Coalition historians will insist that it was a genuine effort and the cloaked ships in the area were simply there to guard against Gorn treachery. - The Interstellar Organian Concordium begins to move into Romulan territory this year, followed by their first incursion into Gorn territory one week later. - The Klingon destroyer "Qrish" is pursued between borderspace and Donatu, by U.F.P. starships upon discovering her disappearence from her homeport in the Shahkur star system. The U.S.S. "Hood" (NCC-1707) heavy cruiser is destroyed in the ensuing battle and the new destroyer U.S.S. "Ajax" (NCC-547) withdraws badly mauled. The "Qrish" escapes unscathed. [SotF, FRS] - Shar-Lon is born on the soon-to-become 'World of the Peacekeepers'. [TNG #2] - The Lornaks massacre the Tralesta clan ending a feud lasting 200 years in the Acamarian system. Yuta of the Tralesta clan has her life span extended to seek revenge. [TNG 157] - The U.S.S. "Ra" (NCC-26279) Mark II "Reliant" class cruiser is destroyed either by hostile action or natural disaster, causes unknown. - A Romulan scoutship is fired on by a Gorn battleship while in a system recently brought under Gorn control. Gorn fire severs the warp engine nacelle of the Romulan craft, limiting its self-destructive capability. The Gorn salvage much of the wreckage, learning about the Romulans. [FASA] - The Fleet Requirements Analysis Board (under the direction of Fleet Admiral Harry Morrow) issues its controversial recommendation for the decommissioning of "Enterprise" class starships as more vessels of the cheaper, but less versatile, "Reliant" class become available. [FRS, ST III] - Star Fleet Command institutes the Rapid Integration Program beginning with the Igresh and Ulthairian races. [FASA] - The Chief of Star Fleet Command orders that all remaining "Enterprise" class starships be retained in active service, and that they undergo systems refurbishing during regular overhauls to permit them to once again be assigned to deep-space exploration. [FRS] - The L-24 "Vor'Cha" ("Ever-Victorious") class battleship enters service in the Klingon navy. The largest warship in the Klingon fleet, this mammoth ship is commissioned into service prior to the testing of the U.F.P.'s "Excelsior" class and for a short period of time the balance of power along the borders turns in favor of the Klingons. The L-24 uses the most powerful warp and impulse engines in the Klingon inventory yielding a highly efficient maneuver ratio and allowing a sustained speed of warp 6 for long periods of time (warp 8 is maximum). The ship's 480 troops and their 8 light support vehicles are capable of being transported to the ground in less than 7 minutes. In addition the ship carries a crew of 1,070. [FASA] - The "USS Leavenworth" (NCC-1901-B) class frigate is authorized for construction. Primarily used to transport troops and fighter craft into battle, this class is armed with 3 megaphasers, 20 standard phasers, and 2 torpedo banks. All 85 proposed ships (NCC-1900-B-NCC-1983-B) are replacements for earlier frigates of the "Knox" class and carry complements of 645 with warp 9.2 capacity. 71 vessels will be built. The U.S.S. "Langley" (NCC-1915-B) frigate of this class will be active during the Wolf 359 battle in 2367. [JRM3, COM] - Tuvok graduates from the Academy and breaks up with his human girlfriend, Sophie Timmins. He will pursue an advanced degree in Tactical Strategies and Weaponry, and will be posted to Deep Space Three. (Pathways - VOY - Ch. 14 , also War Dragons - CT#1) |
2287, May |
- The "Tribble Ship" mystery regarding the U.S.S. "Mundy" is
solved when two of its crewmembers are found in an asteroid cluster,
somehow having been missed when the search parties checked the area for
survivors. They reveal that they had been boarded by a band of renegade
Klingons who, when they discovered that the cargo was tribbles, became
so infuriated that they killed the captain and officers and left the
crewmen on the asteroid. - With the links
between them cut, the Coailtion begins a series of attacks on the Federation
to regain the territory and reopen the routes. When these fail, the Coaltion
(perhaps in frustration) looks toward Tholian territory as a possible
new route. This is yet another strategic mistake that will change the
course of the General War and the nature of the alliances. - The Klingons, based on the success of a local attack by a fighter swarm that destroyed a Tholian battle station, reason that the Tholians can be easily conquered and that the Federation is too overextended to provide them with any significant aid. The Tholians occupied what had once been Klingon territory--and the Klingons want it back. The Lyrans argue against the drive, saying it would simply add dozens of ships to the Alliance forces. The Romulans argue against it because their cloaked ships are vulnerable to Web. - The Romulans launched the last raid on the Federation home worlds, devastating Rigel IV. Their loss of the dreadnought "Consul" in the attack brought an end to strategic penetration attacks by the Coalition. Thereafter, the Romulans make only token attacks but do tie down some Alliance forces. - The Klingons persist and launch a series of furious attacks that will last the entire year. All new Klingon production is thrown into Operation Nutcracker, along with the strategic reserves. The Klingons finally pull out of the "firewall" bases on the Hydran front, leaving them to the Lyrans. The Lyrans "temporarily" take over sections of Kzinti territory to release Klingon fleets for the attack and (for the one and only time) send a full squadron of ships to the Tholian border. Some Lyran ships return to the Federation border, but the limited logistical support in the sector makes it difficult to support them, and the U.F.P. continually raids their tenous supply line, keeping them from being effective. In a desperate panic, the Tholians allow Gorn and Kzinti squadrons to enter their space and participate in the defense against the Klingon (and to a lesser extent Romulan) onslaught. This is the first significant deployment of Kzinti and Gorn forces outside of their own territory, and the first time outside the range of their own supply lines. It will provide valuable lessons for future operations, such as the upcoming Operation Remus. [SFB] - The "Excelsior" (NCC-2000) class upgrade is authorized. Although termed 'upgrade,' existing ships will not be refitted, only new-build "Excelsiors" will be constructed to the new specs. These include hull reinforcements on either side of the navigational deflector (after a few prototypes experienced heavy damage in relatively light battles), additional hangar decks, and nacelles of a more sophisticated design. Some 62 ships are authorized (of which 19 are proposed, not necessarily built), The next starship "Enterprise" (NCC-1701-B) will be a member of this sub-class in the 2290s. |
2287, September |
- The "Soyuz" class frigates are withdrawn from service.
[TNG 218] - In the many months since Operation Nutcracker
the Klingons have pulled specialist ships (maulers and carriers) off
of the Federation border for the attack on the Tholians. By this stage,
the Tholians have lost virtually everything except their capital, and
that has been devastated. This is the time during which Ardak Kumerian
is restored to his rank as Captain of the D6 "Destruction". [SFB] - The "Reliant" class cruiser U.S.S. "Accommadator" (NCC-26256) returns from a 3-year mission into the spinward frontier. Most crew members are given leave while the ship undergoes scheduled maintenance. During the maintenance checks, the "Accommadator" is found to need parts not readily available and is therefore removed from its moorings inside the drydock and placed in an exterior mooring. A month later the "Liberty" class freighter U.S.S. "John B. Goodings" loses its directional maneuvering control system and rams the "Accommadator" causing excessive external damage and internal fires. The burning hull is towed away from the repair facility and allowed to burn itself out. Found unservicable by a damage control team, the vessel is scrapped. [FASA] - At the very moment of victory, the Klingons encounter a new Tholian force: the Neo-Tholian 312th Battle Squadron. The exhausted Klingons are unable to develop tactics against this new technology in time and are forced to back away from the Tholian capital with losses. The Romulans are ejected completely from Tholian territory. The crisis passes, but the war has changed forever--and not in the Coalition's favor. In the final analysis, the Klingons take the blame for championing the ill-fated campaign and making a major error in attacking the Tholians. The operation fails, and worse, it destroys the last strategic reserves of Klingon ships. - Aside from their introduction of fast patrol ships, the last of the Lyran reserves were already lost in a dozen small indecisive battles on the Kzinti and Hydran fronts. The Hydrans finally manage to destroy the Lyran firewall bases in a major offensive. The strategic initiative passes firmly into Alliance hands. This episode enhances the cooperation of the Alliance (by the deployment of fleets outside of their home theaters) and adds a new, if minor, power: the Tholians, with their ships and resources, to the Alliance as the Lyrans had warned. The links between the Klingons and the Romulans are weakened (they blame each other for the failure) and effectively ends their alliance, reducing them to mere co-belligerents. - After the failure of Operation Nutcracker, the Coalition (particularly the Klingons) are at a severe disadvantage in total available forces due to the steadily eroding economic situation. The U.F.P. is able to push the Klingons and the Romulans back to the original borders, where they run into the original network of Coalition bases that had been steadily upgraded during the ten years of war. Here the Federation advance stalls. The advent of fast patrol ships turns the war into one of attrition, and the campaign develops into trench warfare. - Captain K'Temok, commanding the Klingon warship "T'Ong," embarks on a long-term voyage with his crew in suspended animation. [TNG 146] |
2288 |
- Kirk receives a summons from the Planetary Court of
Iotia to answer charges of breach of contract. ("Legal Action," Strange
New Worlds V) - Sulu promoted to Captain. (Starfleet Academy) |
2288, November |
- Hiram Roth dies the day he wins a second term as President of the UFP by a landslide ("Articles of the Federation"). - Ra-ghoratreii, an Efrosian male, is elected President of the UFP during a special election after Hiram Roth's death ("Articles of the Federation"). |

- Hikaru Sulu assumes command of the U.S.S. Excelsior, now
equipped with conventional warp drive. Chekov is temporarily assigned
First Officer. Janice Rand is Communications Officer. (War Dragons -
CT#1, "Star
Trek: The Undiscovered Country"). - Six crewmen from the Excelsior are taken hostage by the Anjiri-Nykuss, including Commander Chekov. The intervention of Captain Koloth nearly results in a war. Afterward, Chekov returns to the Enterprise as Security Chief. (War Dragons - CT#1) - A criminal known as the Albino is chased and nearly captured by Kang, Kor and Koloth (DS9: "Blood Oath"). - The Klingon sleeper ship T'Ong begins a long-time exploration mission (TNG: "The Emissary"). - The Type 4D Combat Phaser sees widespread use by Star Fleet marines and security specialists. A lightweight, dilithium energized weapon, it is meant to be used by a trained marine or security specialist. Intended solely for combat usage and more rugged than previous units, there is no detachable hand-held unit and unlike most other phasers it features moving parts (toggles and thumb verniers) ideal for field combat. It has a maximum stun range of 100 meters, heat range of 30 meters, disrupt range of 200 meters, dematerialize range of 200 meters, and overload blast radius of 1000 meters. [SFD] - Star Fleet Tactical and Star Fleet Operations decide that there are definite advantages in having a permanent test crew assigned to Strategic Design. The Cathedral Unit, the test crew comprised of personnel from the Star Fleet Corps of Engineers and Star Fleet Tactical assigned to evaluate starship prototypes, is formed. [SfP] - The U.F.P. consists of a total of 560 member systems. [SFD] - Dr. Caroline Ravenwood is awarded the Cochrane Award for her breakthroughs in psychotherapeutic engineering, which will eventually make possible the invention of the Holodeck. [FASA] |
2291 |
- Klingon Chancellor Lorak dies and is replaced by Garon.
This ushers in the first real chance of Federation-Empire peace. The
Romulans react by commencing the "First General War". - Captain Roger Wright is assigned to the Cathedral Unit of Star Fleet. [SfP] - Ardak Kumerian is promoted to Thought Admiral. - The Lyrans launched their ill-fated invasion of the WYN Cluster, losing several major ships. - The Grand Alliance launches the three-pronged offensive Operation Remus. - A Gorn fleet drives into Romulan territory intending to rendezvous with the "USS MacArthur" at Remus. - The Kzinti fleet (headed by the space control ship "Titan" and the fast patrol ship tender "Unicorn") was to screen the open rimward flank of the Federation force by operating independently on their right. (This force being the same one that originally deployed in Tholian space.) This is the key to Operation Remus. - The Romulans do not suspect that a Kzinti fleet is anywhere near their territory and assume that the expeditionary fleet (which had disappeared from Tholian territory) had returned home. - The U.F.P. attack engages the 5th Star Legion and destroys the heavy carrier "Imperial Standard." The "MacArthur" then heads straight for Remus. The Gorns, however, are less successful. With a weaker fleet due to their previous losses and strong Romulan forces in their sector (which is a shorter path from the front line to the Romulan capital), they are unable to drive directly toward Remus and are diverted west toward the Federation. The Gorn admiral reasons that by rendezvousing with the Federation and Kzinti forces to the west of Remus, they can make a concerted drive on the capital. In any event, this rendezvous never takes place, freeing some Romulan ships for use against the U.F.P. (Later, there will be sharp words from the Federation Council to the Gorn ambassador, who will be able to restore the good image of his race as allies only by promising to send a fleet to Operation Cavalry.) - The Romulans position the "Gemini" and the 3rd Star Legion to hit the "MacArthur" from the flank, but the Kzinti fleet operating in the chaos of the Romulan rear, catches the Romulans at anchor. The badly broken 3rd Star Legion, with the gutted "Gemini" in tow, retreats into the relatively unoccupied areas of the Empire near the galactic rim. The "Gemini" will be repaired--but not for three years. The Kzinti, reasoning that their job was to screen and that they had eliminated everything worth screening, withdraw on the pretext of a minor Klingon attack on the Kzinti front. This action, later considered treachery by many in the Federation, ultimately worsens (although does not cause) the disaster. - Finally the "MacArthur" reaches Remus, and destroys virtually every military and industrial facility in the entire system. The "Leviathan," and several other ships under construction but still incomplete, are saved--having been towed to Romulus--but everything else is lost. The battle is not, however, entirely a Romulan defeat. Some ten flotillas of the new fast patrol ships, until now untested in battle, rip into the Federation fleet. They ignore all other ships and concentrate their attacks on the "MacArthur." At a terrible loss, they are successful, and the "MacArthur" (unable to separate its saucer section) crashes into the planet. It lands uncontrolled directly into the capital city (also called Remus), at which point the matter/antimatter reactors explode in a 174-megaton explosion. The entire planet is reduced, quite literally, to the stone age in the ensuing planet-wide earthquake and the brief nuclear winter that keeps the planet shrouded in clouds over the next three years. As the Federation fleet withdraws, however, they are attacked by the 1st Star Legion and the "Colossus." Advised of what had happened to Remus (which was the home world for many of the officers and crewmen of the Romulan fleet), the Romulans press home their attacks with a ferocity which, even for Romulans, is incomprehensible. Most of the U.F.P. force is destroyed in the long pursuit that follows. [SFB] - After 25 years the U.F.P. seal is changed. The new seal features a more uniform laurel wreath similar to that in the United Nations seal, circling an altered, gridless, view of the Treaty Zone emphasizing 3 stars. It will be approximately one year before the new seal is employed throughout all divisions of the U.F.P. but it shall remain unaltered for over 80 years. It may initially represent the Grand Alliance and clearly has its design lineage in the Star Fleet Space Station division emblem. [ST VI, SfP, FASA, JRM2] - Unknown forces attack Themis and Kudao. The Klingon moon Praxis explodes, giving the Klingon Empire 50 years of life left. The starship "Excelsior" (NCC-2000) witnesses the subspace shockwave in the Beta Quadrant of the Reydovan sector after 3 years of surveying 54 planets. [ST VI] - At the behest of Ambassador Sarek, Captain Spock opens a dialog with Gorkon, chancellor of the Klingon High Council. He proposes to commence negotiations at once. [ST VI] - At age 29, Tuvok is commissioned as an Ensign and is assigned to the Excelsior. ( Flashback - VOY , also Pathways - VOY - Ch. 14 ) - Demora Sulu attends a Xenoculture course and meets Los Tirasol Mentir for the first time ("Serpents Among the Ruins," The Lost Era). |
2291, July |
- The U.S.S. "Enterprise," drydocked at Starbase 1, undergoes
systems upgrades to warp drive (the incorporation of salvaged Transwarp
technology & intermix sequence giving the ship a maximum emergency
velocity of warp 18.6), secondary propulsion (all pulsed laser reaction-control
systems replaced with particle-beam thrusters), and the possible upgrading
of life support and transporter systems--with the potential alteration
of exterior hull markings in the near-future. This is also likely the time
of her third bridge refitting or swapout. The new bridge module features
the lateral relocation of turbolift shafts allowing the installation of
a total of four aft stations (2 Tactical and 2 Master Situation) instead
of the previous two stations between the turbolift alcoves. This upgrade
results in modification to the upper two deck levels in the command hull
and relocation of the captain's ready room from B Deck to the outer perimeter
of Deck 1, in addition to the usual individual bridge station instrumentation
upgrades. - "Enterprise," under command of Captain Kirk, is assigned to escort the Klingon battlecruiser "Kronos One" through U.F.P. space. Gorkon, Chancellor of the Klingon High Council, is assassinated and Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy are sentenced to the Rura Penthe penal asteroid. Escaping from the asteroid, Kirk prevents the assassination of the U.F.P. President Ra-ghoratreii at the Khitomer Conference and destroys the prototype Bird of Prey "Dakronh," capable of firing while cloaked, commanded by General Chang. The "Enterprise" heads back to Earth to be decommissioned, her principle bridge officers anticipating retirement. "Enterprise" fatalities: Ensign Burke, Ensign Samno (Security Yeomen). [ST VI] - Special WYN commando teams take over the WYN Orion shipyard, using longplanted agents (ceremonies for the completion of the pocket battleship were used to infiltrate additional forces into the yard). This triggers the brief WYN-Orion War which will last for a few weeks within the Cluster. Hard feelings from this episode will lead to clashes outside the Cluster in years to come. Without Orion support, the shipyard can no longer produce Orion ships, but can produce the WYN versions of those hulls. With the shipyard in hand, production of "fish" ships is accelerated (using much of the accumulated wealth of the three generations of Usurpers), and purpose-built variants will begin to appear, such as the drone-bombardment destroyer in 2292. - KEHL (Keep Earth Human League) members stage protests on Earth, growing in force and popularity due to telepathic influences of the Fleelans (Romulan-raised Vulcan descendants). Cadet Peter Kirk is kidnapped by the KEHL and taken to Kronos by Kamarag, also influenced by the Freelans, as a pawn to lure Captain Kirk. The Romulans intend to shatter peace relations between the U.F.P. and Klingon Empire and trigger a war. Under mental influence, the Klingons attack the Patelva colony among other border worlds and the starship "Enterprise" comes to their aid. The "Enterprise" returns to Vulcan for a brief drydocking. Captains Kirk and Spock, and Dr. McCoy rescue Peter Kirk from Kronos and take the "Enterprise" up against the advancing Klingon warships at the Neutral Zone. With the Freelan Plan exposed, Wing Commander Taryn surrenders after defeat in armed combat with Ambassador Sarek. The Romulan-raised Freelan Vulcans are released. - Captain Kirk consults the Guardian of Forever at the Ellison Research Outpost on the Time Planet and is picked up by the U.S.S. "Excelsior" (NCC-2000). [GN 18] - Commanders Uhura and Chekov go undercover on a 6-month mission to flush out illegal weapons dealers of Klingon armaments, under orders from Star Fleet Intelligence. They give the appearance of having been dishonorably discharged from Star Fleet. [GN 20] - At a second Khitomer Conference, Captain Spock and Ambassador Sarek meet Delegate Pardek of the Romulan Star Empire (replacing the executed Ambassador Nanclus). Spock considers the unification of the Romulan and Vulcan peoples. The Khitomer Accords are signed, leading to the dismantling of the Klingon Neutral Zone. [GN 16, TNG 208] - The original projected retirement date for the "Enterprise" senior officers. Probably only Captain Scott retires at this time. [ST VI, GN 20] - The U.S.S. "Enterprise" (NCC-1701-A) is mothballed, and scheduled to be decommissioned next year. The "Excelsior" class U.S.S "Enterprise" (NCC-1701-B) is laid down. [ST VI, GN 20, TNG 230, ST VII] - The U.S.S. "Potemkin" (NCC-2005) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - Following the conquest of Tal Demica, the High Gul and his Elite Guard are placed in suspended animation. He is betrayed by Fransu, who not only takes credit for the conquest but also sees to the slaughter of two thousand of the High Gul's men. The High Gul and the last of his Elite will be moved to Terok Nor once the station is completed and operational. [DSN #13] |
2292 |
- The Romulans are the last Coalition power capable of
a strategic offensive, following several years of attrition battles
fought in the Devastated Zone in the Outlands. The Romulan deployments
are as follows, with each fleet designated by a flagship: |
2292, April |
This would be the projected time of decommissioning for the starship USS ENTERPRISE. The ship would have been a target vessel for wargames testing the new Mark VIII twin vortice photon torpedoes. [GN 20] |
2292, June |
- Several senior officers of the "Enterprise" retire from
Star Fleet. Captain James Kirk receives a gold chronometer from Star
Fleet and a Vulcan robe from Spock, who also presents his captain with
a wooden sextant and Dr. McCoy with a Vulcan mandala. Kirk gives Spock
a paper copy of 'Horatio Hornblower.' Captain Spock will consider doing
some diplomatic work with Sarek, and take up Shakespearian acting on
Vulcan. Dr. McCoy presents Kirk with a wine bottle and a mantel clock
(Kirk will later visualize it in the Nexus, or perhaps another clock
he gave McCoy as a gift), and Spock with a bottle of Saurian brandy.
He will have a private practice in New York after spending time with
his daughter Joanna, and her family, possibly followed by research out
in the B'renga sector. Captain Scott will be hired as a part-time consultant
by Star Fleet for the design of vessels and settle in Scotland with his
sister's family. Commander Uhura will become Senior Vice President in
charge of Procurement and Delivery at Inter-Galactic Systems, in orbit
between Earth and Mars. Commander Chekov, between assignments, will work
for Trans-Universal Shipping (having learned that Irina Galliulin was
soon to marry--someone else). Kirk swears he will never set foot aboard
a starship again. In 2293 he will break his promise and consequently
end his life. [ST VI, ST VII, TOS #74] - A Hydran-Klingon Conflict occurs. This is a prelude to war between the Klingon Empire and the Hydran Congress. The latter are a cloistered people on the verge of interstellar flight. [TNG #31] - The Federation urges its allies to launch a renewed offensive against the Romulans, reasoning that with only a handful of dreadnoughts on the front line, two-thirds of the Romulan Empire literally burned to the ground, and the imperial fleet in tatters, actual conquest (or subjugation) of the Romulans is possible. This would solve a long-term problem that had faced the Federation and Gorns for more than a century. However, the problem is that no such offensive is possible without drawing one U.F.P. fleet and one Kzinti fleet from the Klingon-Lyran theater. Two Federation fleets can't be transferred, as the Kzinti would have had to divert parts of their fleet to defend U.F.P. territory. The Kzinti flatly refuse and present good arguments in favor of their position. While the subjugation of the Romulan Star Empire would solve Federation and Gorn problems, it would do nothing for the Kzinti (at least not immediately). The Kzinti also consider the key victory of the Operation Remus campaign (that of their own expeditionary fleet) to have been a matter of sheer luck that could not be counted on again. Moreover, the Romulans, even left to themselves, will not become a threat to the U.F.P. and Gorns for at least a decade. - The Grand Alliance then turns its attention to the Klingons. Considering that the fleets that would have been required as garrisons would have been no smaller than those left on combat patrol, there is little validity in claims that the war will turn out any more favorably for the Alliance. The Romulans rush to get the ROC "Senator" into service, but then repair the "Gemini" (not having been converted to a space control ship) before completing the conversion of the "Leviathan." Romulan dreadnought strength, which had been eight in 2288 has fallen to only three (the "Colussus," "Proconsul," and "Behemoth"), although this will increase to six by the end of 2294 with the completion of the "Leviathan" and the "Senator" and the repair of the "Gemini." They also convert "Superhawk" cruisers to the questionable "Killerhawk" and "Thunderhawk" designs. Romulan efforts are devoted exclusively, from this point on, to retaining what is left of their economy. Low-level attrition battles will continue through 2295, but there will be no major operations in the Romulan theater that will affect the course of the war. The Romulans and the Gorns devote more and more of their forces to the IOC frontier. Meanwhile, the Klingon-Lyran/Kzinti-Federation front remains stable since it returned to the original border circa 2289. Occasional operations punctuate what is otherwise an attrition battle without major changes in ownership of terrain, while the WYN had taken over the Orionowned shipyard in the Cluster last year. The Klingons use their last operational reserves for an unsuccessful attack on the WYN Cluster. (The original commander assigned to this operation, Admiral Korath, is killed when Federation F-15 fighters intercept the fast patrol ship leader he was using for an inspection tour. Command then devolved onto Commodore Ketrick, the officer who had drawn up most of the plans. Ketrick is also killed, but his flagship, the battlecruiser "IKV DeathDealer ," survives the debacle.) Shortly after this operation, the WYN frigate "Black Dragon" makes an epic voyage to the LDR to obtain gatling phasers for use on new WYN warships to take part in the War of Return (after the General War). After the success of Operation Remus, the Federation (facing an economy just starting to show the strain of war) sends its major units to the Klingon front and the Gorns deploy a fleet to that theater. The joint Alliance Command decides on an operation to destroy the key northern Klingon starbase. The theory being that the destruction of this base will collapse the northern Klingon sector, currently protected by a neutral Frax fleet. In one of the preparatory operations to pave the way for this Operation Cavalry, the Klingon 77th Gunboat Division is lured into a trap and destroyed. The combined Cavalry fleets drive into Klingon space, but the Gorn admiral-in-command allows his forces to be dispersed to engage several minor Klingon forces. - Admiral Cat-who-sleeps-with-dogs of the "Hegemony" refuses to directly engage the Coalition forces during Operation Cavalry, secretly being a critical part of the post-war plan for the return of the Usurper. It will eventually become involved in the battle of the "WYN and the Lion" involving the Lyrans. Meanwhile, the decisive battle against Kumerian's Red Fleet is an Alliance victory, but a pyrrhic one as the remaining fleet is inadequate to assault a starbase and virtually destroyed. In a strategic sense, however, the campaign is something of a victory as the last Klingon and Lyran elements are forced out of those parts of Kzinti space they still held. The Kzinti cannot, however, make serious headway against the original Lyran and Klingon border defenses, or perhaps they do not try. Late in the year, the Seltorian Tribunal Fleet arrived from the original Tholian home galaxy and began its first attrition operations against the Tholians. The only real effect this has is to effectively end Tholian willingness to send any expeditionary fleets into the Federation. Also this year, an attempt is made by one Romulan faction to negotiate a separate peace--a move blocked at Oxvind-V by the last Klingon ships operational in Romulan space. [SFB] - The Tellarites declare victory in absentia over the Calligar. [TOS #57] - The U.S.S. "Kitty Hawk-B" (NCC-2007/B) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - Beyond the frontier, the "USS Excelsior" (NCC-2000) offers assistance to the Beta Promethean vessel "Sundew" and the starship's officers are kidnapped, including Captain Sulu. An incident develops which Klingon factions unhappy with the recent U.F.P. treaty are preparing to exploit. Retired Captain Kirk reunites the senior officers of the "Enterprise" on Earth and stages a mission to Beta Prometheus aboard the star yacht "Plush Princess." The mission is a success although entirely unsanctioned by Star Fleet and the U.F.P. - Iron Mike Paris graduates Starfleet Academy with honors ("Serpents Among the Ruins," The Lost Era). |
2292, November |
Ra-ghoratreii is sworn in to a second term as President of the UFP ("Articles of the Federation" - based on a 4-year election cycle). |
2293 |
- Uhura vacations in a far-off region of the galaxy before
returning to teach at the Academy. Spock is involved in a diplomatic mission
on behalf of Vulcan. McCoy and his family attend his granddaughter's graduation
from the Vulcan Science Academy. Retired Captain Kirk takes on a series
of daredevil stunts including rappelling the Crystalline Trench, rafting
down lava flows, and orbital skydiving. Scott and Chekov meet him in a
cornfield on Earth one day prior to the "Enterprise's" christening ceremony. Captain
Sulu of the "Excelsior" returns from a star-mapping expedition in the Thanatos
sector. [ST VII] - Kirk renews his relationship with Carol Marcus. The Enterprise-A is destroyed while defending the Excelsior from Klingon warships under the direction of Starfleet Chief Admiral Drake. (The Ashes Of Eden) - Captain Sulu is captured by the Beta Promethean ship Sundew and is rescued by Kirk and crew aboard the star-yacht Plush Princess . (The Fearful Summons - TOS#74) - Chekov rejoins Captain Sulu's crew as First Officer aboard the Excelsior. (War Dragons - CT#1) - Kirk visits the Guardian of Forever for the final time. (Federation - Prologue/Epilogue) - Kal-Tor Lissan of the Falorians is murdered in his Federation prison cell by the Orion Syndicate. (The Last Roundup - Epilogue) - The Romulans sign a non-aggression treaty with Triskelion. ("Lights In The Sky," Strange New Worlds I) |

2293, Post-June
|
- The "Excelsior" class U.S.S. "Enterprise" (NCC-1701-B)
is christened in Earth orbit. Captains Kirk and Scott,
along with Commander Chekov, are guests on her first cruise
under the command of Captain John Harriman. On the outskirts
of Sol, the "Enterprise" comes to the rescue of the El
Aurian transport ship "Lakul," rescuing Dr. Tolian Soran
and Guinan among other Listeners, from the Nexus energy
ribbon. Captain Kirk is seemingly killed in the line of
duty saving the ship, and the "Enterprise's" secondary
hull and deflector dish is severely damaged. Only 47 are
rescued from the "Lakul," Guinan's "6th sense" having originated
from contact with the Nexus ribbon. [ST VII] - The "Enterprise" (NCC-1701-B) will be commanded by Captains John Harriman and Tomas Johnson, Jr. and be a key figure in the exploration of space beyond the Gourami Sector. Over 142 star systems will be mapped by this ship, including first contact with 17 civilizations. Other captains of this "Enterprise" will reportedly be Saavik and Matthew Stanley. [ST VII, EDC, NTM, FTS] - NCC-1701-B reportedly will be loosely assigned to Starbase 12, taking part in many engagements in the Neutral Zone and the Triangle. She will serve on 4 five-year galaxy exploration tours and boast the least crew losses by death for six years straight. Often serving as a transport for dignitaries, the "Enterprise's" passengers will include at one time or another: the Klingon Emperor and his consort, the Romulan Praetor, 6 of the most powerful Orion families, the whole Vulcan political hierarchy, 50 Star Fleet admirals, and the entire Federation Council. The ship's career will be ended 5 parsecs from the Imperial Klingon States upon engaging an IKS L-24 battleship and a Romulan "Nova" class battleship working together in the Triangle. [FASA] - The U.S.S. "Chikuma" (NCC-2008) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - The Kotri close-in deflector shield system (CIDSS) is incorporated into the "Enterprise (II)" class heavy cruisers. The CIDDS might also be backfitted into all "Constitution (II)" class vessels. [SotF] - The U.S.S. "Kongo-B" (NCC-2009/B) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - Spock and Pardek meet on the Khitomer Conference (TNG: "Unification"). - "Project Archangel" recommendation is adapted and Starfleet Marines are 'Mothballed' while Starfleet primary focus is directed to low-scale Military solutions and Research/Scientific emphasis. (Gal:TNG) - Elaan of Troyius ruminates upon her time spent with Kirk years earlier ("Obligations Discharged," Strange New Worlds VII). - Spock returns to Vulcan to act as than'tha for Saavik's orphaned student, Sanara ("The First Law Of Metaphysics," Strange New Worlds II). |
2294 |
- The U.S.S. "Jenolen" (NCC-S2010) "Sydney" class transport,
bound for the Norpin V colony crashes onto an alien Dyson Sphere artifact.
The retiring Captain Montgomery Scott, and Ensign Matt Franklin, are
the only survivors of the crash. They lock the transporter's pattern
buffer in a diagnostic cycle and place themselves into transporter stasis.
[TNG 230] - A distress beacon lures the "Enterprise" (NCC-1701-B) to Askalon V. Captain Harriman is forced to kill Ensign Demora Sulu in self-defense. The "Enterprise-B" heads back to Earth for memorial services as does the "Excelsior" (NCC-2000). Spock is on a diplomatic mission and is unable to attend. McCoy also is unavailable: undergoing an organ transplanet. With Askalon V under quarantine, Captain Sulu disregards orders to handle a diplomatic situation at Centrelis (a world newly admitted to the U.F.P. and on the Tholian border) and takes the "Excelsior" to Askalon V. Harriman and his father, Admiral Harriman, intercept the "Excelsior" at Askalon with the "Enterprise" and rescue Demora Sulu from Taine who believed her to be his daughter. Harriman had phasered a clone--the product of forbidden alien technology uncovered on this world. This would be the last time the Harriman's would speak to each other outside of official capacity, being as the younger Harriman beamed his father to the brig.[TOS #76] - The U.S.S. "Ajax" (NCC-2010/A) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - The Klingons assemble a huge "swarm" force of fighters and and, hoping that one major battle will give them the bargaining strength to end the war, launch an attack. - Federation Admiral Jack "Cracker Jack" Radey saves the fleet at the Pleiades Turkey Shoot. After the victory, the Federation launches its only major attack on the Klingon capital, but this operation is defeated and accomplishes little more than wrecking the incomplete Klingon battleship "IKV Inviolable," a major propaganda victory. The B-10 battleship "Inviolable" (the 3rd on which construction was stared) was only partially complete when sent into action against the Grand Alliance offensive, and so heavily damaged that construction was never completed. - By the end of the year, the known galaxy is literally exhausted with no will remaining in any government to launch new offensives. - The IOC has begun to make serious incursions into Gorn and Romulan space, and the Galactic Intelligence Agency is sounding dire warnings of IOC spies operating within U.F.P. territory. - The appearance of Andromedan Android Dominators turns this mysterious race from a curious nuisance to a major threat. - The last serious Klingon attack on the Kzinti destroys the infamous 23rd Fi-Con Division but accomplishes little else. - The groundwork for the Kzinti War of Return (also known as the Second Kzinti Civil War) had been laid for years. When the old Patriarch dies, the Crown Prince does not immediately ascend to the throne--the nobles using the end "crisis" as an excuse to avoid the obligatory confirmation ceremony. The Usurper, wanting the throne but unable to take it by himself, makes a complex deal with the Count. For his part, the Usurper agrees to build a single mauler (using Lyran technology originally gained from the Romulans) and use it and most of his forces to attack a battle station located near the Cluster. The battle station, built by the old Patriarch in the Count's territory, was under the Crown Prince's control. The Count will not openly support the Usurper until this base is captured or destroyed--the Count regarded its removal as a "show of good faith", by the Usurper. The Count promises the Usurper support from the space control ship "Hegemony". [SFB] - Magna Roma (UFC 892-IV) becomes a member of the U.F.P. following revolutions and the start of reforms. [TNG #8] - The U.S.S. "Achilles-A" (NCC-2011/A) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - The Camp Khitomer peace conference continues to have an impact on Star Fleet. Opposing factions debate the role of starships in the Fleet (weapons platforms vs. unarmed exploration vessels). Differing viewpoints has resulted in a schism in the Federation Council and in Star Fleet, with the ensuing conflict yielding Council member resignations, withdrawal from the U.F.P. by several governments, and the early retirement of several high-ranking Star Fleet officers. At this time a compromise is reached: both peace-keeping and exploration roles would be preserved, with exploration and scientific studies established as Star Fleet's primary mission. Appropriations are made to design and build a new class of starships to be the vanguard of this new policy: the Starcruisers. This will result in the launch of the U.S.S. "Constellation" (NCC-1017) in 2299. [GSM] THIS IS THE START OF 'PROJECT ARCHANGEL' - In the Small Magellanic Cloud, the Neyel cruiser Slicer follows the last known path of Tuskerslayer through the interspatial rift, emerging in Tholian space. (The Lost Era: The Sundered - Ch. 25) - Demora Sulu, assigned as Helmsman aboard the Enterprise-B, is purportedly killed by Captain Harriman in an act of self-defense. (The Captain's Daughter - TOS#76) - Spock returns to Vulcan to act as than'tha for Saavik's orphaned student, Sanara. ("The First Law Of Metaphysics," Strange New Worlds II) - "About a year" after Kirk's disappearance. (Vulcan's Forge) |

- Construction is completed on the "Riga" (NCC-3340) class
corvettes, totalling 17. [SotF] - Three ships of the "Tikopai" class are assigned to the Star Fleet Reserve Force. [SotF] - The Organians return and halt the war. They offer no explanation for their absence, but express hope that the "Lower Empires" (as they call the others) have "learned the futility of war." Tentative diplomatic initiatives by many races meets with a warm (if grudging) reception, and a general peace agreement ends the General War with the original borders more or less intact. However, within the next few weeks of the General War's end, a group of disgruntled officers will overthrown the Romulan government, precipitating the Romulan Civil War. - The Klingons conquer the Krebiz following the period of the General War in their War of Annihilation, absorbing the remaining Krebiz into the the slave population of the Klingon Empire. The Klingons also set out to exterminate the Seltorian Tribunal, which had failed to eradicate the Tholians. The IOC sees their advantage in the ending of the General War, as they possess more ships than any three of the races combined, as well as the 'blessings' of the Organians. - The outbreak of plasma plague in the Obi system takes many lives. (TNG: "The Child") - The U.S.S. "Arizona-B" (NCC-2012/B) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - The heavy cruisers "Essex" (NCC-1727) and "Potemkin" (NCC-1711) are decommissioned. The building/converting of "Enterprise (II)" class heavy cruisers is completed. - The Mark IV becomes the Federation standard in torpedo design which will last for over 80 years. The only major changes in the design will be software upgrades. [KTM] - The Battle of Gamma Amar IV is fought. The Klingons soundly route the Federation forces. [TNG #33] - Star Fleet reaches its Class One fleet buildup goal of approximately 90 classes and 1600 active hulls, Commissioner Valdemar's proposition and 'PROJECT ARCHANGEL' is officially underway. [SotF] - The U.S.S. "Royal Oak II" (NCC-2013) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - As the mouth of the intergalactic rift drifts closer to Oghen, Tholian vessels begin to threaten the Neyel homeworld. Gran Drech'tor Zafir declares a genocidal war against the Tholians. (The Lost Era: The Sundered - Ch. 26) - A "holochamber," the precursor to holodeck technology, is field-tested by Captain Harriman aboard the Enterprise. ("Shakedown," Enterprise Logs) - Rachel Garrett is born ("Well of Souls," The Lost Era). |

- The IOC launch their "Pacification Program" (or "ISC Conquest")
and freely roam within the entire known area of the Near Side of the
galaxy as far as Lyran space. The start of a self-appointed peacekeeping
mission to end warfare, not conquest as such, the IOC will learn to leave
the Tholians alone and never will actually conquer any major race. They
do however manage to force races to withdraw from their border areas,
hoping to keep the races apart and keep wars from happening. Two years
of peace will result, during which warship construction will reach a
peak, giving the galaxy the edge needed to survive the upcoming Andromedan
Invasion. The Organians have some contact with the IOC and may have had
an arrangement under which the IOC assumed these peacekeeping duties.
During the upcoming Andromedan War, the ISC will gradually give up its
idealistic pacification philosophy. - The Ansata of Rutia IV are denied their independence and resort to terrorism which will last for over 70 years. [TNG 160] - The U.S.S. "Arizona II" (NCC-2012) "Excelsior" class starship is destroyed in action. [FASA] - The U.S.S. "Agincourt II" (NCC-2014) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - While the Interstellar Organian Concordium attempts to save the warring galaxy from itself by occupying most of it over the next year, the WYN launch the War of Return against the Kzinti, sparking months of civil war. The Usurper, storms out of the Cluster. The campaign will last nearly a year, and will end in a titanic duel of space control ships. The Crown Prince knows it is his only chance to win, since the Duke is about to join the Usurper. The Usurper, at first reluctant to accept the duel when on the verge of victory, will do so when many of his ships announce plans to depart due to the IOC threat to the Cluster. Both the "Hegemony" and the "Titan" survive their duel, though both ships require extensive repairs. In the years to come the adherents of both sides will claim that it was their leader who sat on the Patriarch's throne. The WYN-Kzinti will be welcomed back into the Hegemony, and a few will return to the Cluster, along with Kzinti from the Crown Prince's side. Some, from both sides of the war, will become pirates. - The Hydrans launch a local operation to recapture the Landfalk system from a former Klingon satrap, and fail. [SFB] -The U.S.S. "Constellation" (NCC-1017), lead ship of the "Constellation" class starcruisers, is unveiled after 20 months of intensive effort. [GSM] - The U.S.S. "Yamashiro II" (NCC-2015) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - After their demand of independence is refused, the Ansata of the Eastern Continent of Rutia IV begin a long terrorist war (TNG: "The High Ground"). - By this time, Lt. M'Ress has vanished into a time portal and will emerge some 80 years later. (Gateways #6: Cold Wars - NF) - The Jenolen crashes while investigating a Dyson sphere. Captain Scott and Ensign Matt Franklin place themselves into stasis in a transporter buffer. (TNG: Relics) - Rafe Buonarroti is assigned to the USS Enterprise-B as an Engineer ("Serpents Among the Ruins," The Lost Era). |
2296, October 31 |
- For decades, the WYN government council had consisted of seven members, of which three represented the Kzinti; one each the Orions, Lyrans, and "everyone else"; and the seventh was the Usurper (sitting as chairman). With the departure of the Usurper and most of the Kzinti, the demographics of the Cluster literally change overnight. A palace coup reforms the council, reducing it to 5 members (including an elected chairman and the vacant Orion seat) and reducing the Kzinti to a single seat. The council declares continued support for the Usurper, if only in the hope that he will not "return." Aggressive Lyran and Klingon probes in the last months this year will cause great concern and will result in the arrival of numerous Orion mercenary warships and the resumption of the construction of true Orion ship designs. - Klingons establish first contact with the people of Ventax
II. (TNG: "Devil's Due") - The Federation makes first contact with Ventax III, a peaceful rural society on the formerly highly industrialized planet (TNG: "Devil's Due"). - Tuvok announces to his parents his decision to pursue the Kohlinar discipline. (Pathways - VOY - Ch. 14) - After completing mining operations on Janus VI, Engineer Vanderburg of the Federation gives a farewell speech to the Horta ("Guardians," Strange New Worlds VII). |
2298 |
- The U.S.S. "Exeter II" (NCC-2016) "Excelsior" class starship
is built. [FASA] - Beta Li'odo signs a treaty with the U.F.P. The first known contact with the Nuaran Imperium occurs when the U.S.S. "Polaris" (NCC-1443-B) engages the invading fleet. [TNG #6, JRM3] -The Fifth Fleet of the Krenn detect radio signals from the 30453 FAS system and determine that they are from the Lethanta. The Krenn stop off in a nearby system and rebuild their fleet into an even more powerful Sixth Fleet to ensure absolute victory. [TNG #37] - The Andromedans invade the galaxy with a vengeance, reaching the borders of the Lyran Democratic Republic. The Klingon B-10 battleship "Invulnerable" (the 4th on which construction commenced) is never completed, but the boom section is completed and assigned to the local defense of the Klinzhai system. It will be destroyed by the Andromedans this year, but will be the key to defeating the Andromedan attack on Klinzhai, the Klingon capital. The Romulan KB10R battleship design is never delivered or begun by the Klingons, though papers are signed with the Romulans promising delivery of the "Inseparable". [SFB] - The U.S.S. "Fuso II" (NCC-2019) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] - Unable to stem the continuing violent incursions of the Neyel, the Tholians request a meeting with the Federation to discuss a possible alliance. The Excelsior is sent into Tholian space to host the negotiations. (The Lost Era: "The Sundered") - Tuvok resigns from Starfleet and returns to Vulcan, where he announces to his parents his decision to pursue the Kohlinar discipline. (Pathways - VOY - Ch. 14, Titan: "Red King") - Lojur, a Halkan outcast that served on Excelsior with Tuvok, travels to Vulcan with the former science officer to undergo teachings on how to control his violent tendencies. Lojur returns to Starfleet after only half a Vulcan year having given up on the endeavour (Titan: "Red King"). |
2299 |
- All major Class 1b starships are "Transwarp" retrofitted.
[SfP] - Wiith a great deal of fanfare, the U.S.S. "Constellation" (NCC-1017) star cruiser is launched and turned over to Star Fleet's Cathedral Unit for shakedown. The last message received from the "Constellation" indicates a matter/antimatter imbalance had created a wormhole into which the ship was being drawn. The ship is destroyed, lost with all hands. This disaster spells the end of the "Constellation" class star cruiser (at least for this era) and the design is scrapped with an effort begun to replace it. The ten largest shipbuilding entities in the U.F.P. are supplied with specifications and requested to prepare new designs for a ship to take the "Constellation's" place. Note that the "Constellation II" class heavy cruiser (refit?) will later prove to be highly successful. [GSM, COM] - The Klingon B-10 "Insatiable" (the 2nd of the battleship class on which construction began) was converted during construction to a B10V heavy carrier (which may have been ready for service in this form in 2294) and, when almost complete, was partially disassembled and converted to a B10S space control ship. It was completed this year and used against the Andromedans, carrying stasis field generators to trap an enemy ship in a helpless time-space energy field. [SFB] - U.S.S. "Ryujo II" (NCC-2022) "Excelsior" class starship is built. [FASA] |
2300 |
- Captain Hikaru Sulu at age 70 may be experiencing heart
problems at this time from latent gravity stress effects experienced in
his childhood, according to Dr. McCoy's diagnosis in 2258. [GN 1] - War breaks out between the Klingon Empire and the Hydran Congress. The war will last decades and be bitter for both sides: "twenty years of war and twenty more of harassment" as described by the Hydrans. [TNG #31] - Star Fleet begins employing combadges utilizing the decades-old uniform insignia pin with the writ mounted comm-bracelet combo. The badges appear identical to the old insignias but incorporate communicators. [COM] - The Directorate discovers how to physically transport across to our continuum and learns that dilithium, as with all disposed materials, is unrecoverable. The underground movement tampers with the records, tricking the Directorate into believing that Krantin's asteroid belt is the source of dilithium, not the planet itself. [TNG #36] - The U.S.S. "Hood II" (NCC-2017) "Excelsior" class starship is built. She may be assigned the number NCC-42296 later on in the century. [FASA, TNG 101] |
