Birth and Early Childhood
Born Tinishaavi shanivoor sh’Akledor on the Andorian Independent world of Seltaxis (Seltax VII), T’shani grew up in the privileged and politically powerful Akledor clan that ruled the mountainous and resource-rich Barraad province on the northern continent of Teer Shev. To say the least, childhood life was unique for the young shen. From an early age, her formal training incorporated
the traditional teachings of discipline and martial-arts skills.
From the beginning of her training, Tish--as her friends called her--demonstrated remarkable skill and poise, even at a very early age. Her inherent physicality, combined with a keen intellect and uncanny precognition provided her with the drive and clarity to learn both the vreem and kroov styles of Andorian martial arts before her first Age of Turning. By age 12, she had attained the level
of Student-Master in both disciplines. Particularly, she became skilled with the chaka blade (the Andorian honor sword, passed down through a clan by generations), so much that she was awarded the title of Apprentice-Master, a title never before bestowed on someone so young.
Her great skills as a young warrior did not come without price, however. The long, exhausting training sessions left very little time for her to develop requisite social and cultural skills with the other younglings her age. Oftentimes, T'shani was made the subject of childish jokes and pranks, especially concerning her lanky, preadolescent frame and belligerent tendencies. Though she had mastered
the blade, it seemed she was still too young to develop control over her innate aggressiveness. To say the least, she often became entangled in fights with others her age, though usually not the one to land the first blow. Instead, she defended herself--and the few friends she did have--vigorously. Needless to say, she never lost a fight.
Through it all, however, her one true friend, Troneshevlaar th'Koorvban--a thaan the same age as her--stood by and always defended her. Inseparable from age 4, Tinis (her preferred form of her name-song) and Tron seemed to share a common bond that ran deeper than simple friendship. In fact, both children's parents had made arrangements for the two to become a shelaa, or bond-pair. At their first
Age of Turning at age 12 (both Tinis and Tron were born in the same cycle), they were joined as a Chosen Pair of Firsts through tezha (a formal, premarital, coital union to establish and reinforce a sheyv, or soul-bond). Following the old practices of tezhayv, they were expected to choose a suitable Pair of Seconds at the celebration of their second Age of Turning, approximately 10 to 12 years
later. At that time, a public shelthreth ceremony (the procreative form of sexual union within a marriage-quad) would be held to celebrate the newly-bonded quad.
Sadly, tragedy struck before she and Tron were completely bonded through tezha. Her world--indeed, her whole life--was quickly turned upside-down.
The Fall of Seltaxis
On stardate 44389.05 (23 May 2367), the Seltax system was invaded by a Romulan armada intent on annexing the system for the Star Empire. (For more information about Seltax and its disputed history, see the "Historical Notes" section below.) T'shani and Tron, along with their clans, made their way through the secret underground tunnels of Askeev in an attempt to escape to the other side of the
mountain range. For days, the Romulans followed them, killing many of her clansmen, including her zhavay (zhen-mother), Yela.
Unfortunately, soon after they escaped the Askeev Tunnels, they were ambushed again while trying to cross the Karu River. In the ensuing battle, her charan (chan-father), Koor was murdered. As Koor fell, Tinis seized his chaka, fighting vigorously (even killing a few Romulans) before she and the others were captured, bound, and marched to the Romulan encampment, where she and the other females
were tortured, raped, and mutilated as the men were forced to helplessly watch, before being brutally executed, themselves.
Separated from both her clan and her tezhay Tron, Tinis was subjected to cruel abuse at the hands of a particularly twisted Romulan lieutenant named Toluk. Using her young body for to play out his own perversions, he repeatedly raped, beat, and tortured her. Unable to escape or resist, Tinis resigned herself to death, her last conscious thought of her mothers and fathers and her tezhay, Tron.
Escape From the Battle
Help, albeit late, finally arrived. A Federation task force--assembled expressly to liberate Seltaxis--drove the Romulan fleet from the sector, while Starfleet Marine Corps ground troops mopped up the invaders planetside. Attacking at night, SFMC commandos raided the Romulan encampment T'shani and Tron were held at. In the ensuing commotion, Tron somehow escaped and rescued T'shani, who was suffering
extreme blood-loss and dehydration; she was on the brink of death.
The next thing she was aware of, Tinis had somehow been transported back across the Karu River, and was lying under a rocky overhang, her father's chaka mysteriously beside her. Upon regaining her strength somewhat, she searched for Tron, but never saw him again. Alone, tired, beaten and exhausted, Tinis wandered aimlessly along the Karu River. On the second day of her wandering, she came upon
a band of Romulan fugitives, hiding out in a cave. One of them, she recognized, was her rapist, Toluk. As she spied on the Romulans, she discovered that Toluk was also the one responsible for the attack on Karu Barraad, and the one responsible for the ambush at the Karu River. In essence, he was the one responsible for all the death and torture T'shani had witnessed and experienced.
Fueled by the fury of unquenchable grief and inordinate pain and suffering, the battered shen went berserk, killing the Romulans as they slept, but not before Toluk escaped. Ignoring her own pain, she willed herself to survive--she vowed that she would not rest until the day Toluk's green blood flowed down her father's--now her--chaka blade.
Revenge, however, would not be hers at that point. A young Caitian recon scout named K'rr,m'n Blackar accidentally stumbled upon young T'shani as she rested. Earning her trust, he immediately turned her over to his commanding officer, Major Tanner Houghton of the 209th Spaceborne Ranger Specialist's Regiment.
A New Beginning
After the battle, Tanner was awarded temporary custody of T’shani until the courts could decide her fate. Without any surviving relatives on Seltaxis, and no distant relatives on Andor willing to take her, her custody was awarded to Major Houghton and his wife, Margarie on New Texas. Over time, her physical wounds healed, though the psychological damage was harder to overcome. Adjusting
to life without her clan, and being raised now by Pinkskin aliens was, to say the least, difficult for T'shani. The first year was hardest, as she also underwent extensive physical and psychological therapies.
Tanner and Margarie's loving yet military-strict parenting style provided the needed strength and discipline the now-adolescent shen had been so used to with her clan. Within time, she grew to love and trust both of her new "parents", as well as their five other natural children. At 16, the legal Andorian age for self-determination, T'shani decided to allow the Houghtons to officially adopt her.
Though rough at times, her road to recovery was quick. She became especially close to Tanner, who reminded her so much of her thavan, Eriv. Soon, as "father" and "daughter" they became inseparable, and Tanner--now newly-promoted to Lieutenant Colonel--did everything he could to continue her martial and military training, as Eriv would have done.
Because of this, or perhaps because of her natural interests and experiences, Tinis poured herself into being the best warrior she could be, training hard so that she could gain a commission in the Starfleet Marine Corps. Upon applying, however, she was turned down--the Acceptance Board questioned her mental stability because of her losses on Seltaxis. At the same time, Tanner became more
distant, not only to T'shani, but to the whole family, as well. There were whisperings that he was somehow involved in a new, clandestine agency of the Marine Corps. Either way, Tinis tried not to show her hurt from his new behavior. Instead, she again applied for military duty, this time enlisting herself as a member of the elite Andorian Imperial Guard.
The Andorian Guard
Her reasons for joining the Andorian Guard were twofold. First, since the SFMC had snubbed her, it was her way of snubbing them back. Also, it was her way of dealing with Tanner's sudden uninvolvement in her pursuit. One way or another, she vowed to prove that she was every bit the warrior-shen she had trained to be.
Finishing the Andorian Guard Basic Training at Juurth, Andor, Tinis was assigned to the prestigious 4th A.G. Strike Brigade (the same unit that had participated in some of the biggest pre- and post-Federation battles of the Andorian Guard) as a rifle soldier.
Quickly, she made her way up the ranks, becoming a squad leader at the age of 19. In 2376, her unit participated with the Andorian Guard as they repelled the Tholians at Chryonis V, for which her unit was awarded the prestigious Andorian Regent's Unit Citation award (though details of her actions still remained Classified). Later the next year, now promoted as a recon specialist and attached
to a "black" infiltration/retrieval team, she again faced down the Tholians at the Battle of Helmis Retreat.
Starfleet Marine Corps
Although she loved her life in the Andorian Guard, T'shani's advancement opportunities were limited by its smaller force-size. Always willing to try new things, T'shani decided that she would train to become a starfighter pilot.
Timing was--as the saying goes--everything. In late 2378, the SFMC Aerospace Corps had just expanded from 14 fighter groups to 26; they needed new pilots, now. Realizing that this was an opportunity too good to pass on, T'shani applied for, and was accepted to, the SFMC's Officer Integration School (since all fighter pilots had to be officers) at Syrtis City, Mars. There, she underwent an intensive
series of fast-track courses as a W-1 Warrant Officer. Being her first time in the core world Sol System, Tinis was amazed at the teeming variety of different species and people that lived there. She greatly enjoyed her training courses on Earth, and even went so far as to purchase a private villa for herself on the eastern coast of Central America. Finally, she had a place she could now call
Home.
But "home" didn't last long. After successfully graduating Aerospace Top Gun Academy, Tish was awarded her commission as a First Lieutenant and assigned as a combat pilot to the U.S.S. Thunderbird's Nighthawk Squadron.
Red Division
Just after her assignment to the Nighthawks, however, Tanner suddenly contacted her again, much to her surprise. To say the least, they hadn't talked to each other since her enlistment with the Andorian Guard, 7 years ago. He informed her that Margarie was dying, an unknown and previously undiagnosed genetic disorder. Rushing home (the Houghtons now lived on Mars), T'shani once again watched
as a "mother" was taken from her in a matter of days.
Upon Marge's death--and perhaps, because of it--Tanner finally broke down the walls between he and Tinis, explaining that the reason he had been distant for so long was to protect her. Though she didn't quite understand what he had meant, she let him explain to her that he had been selected to direct a top-secret Military Intelligence division. Unlike the regular M.I.'s, it wasn't numbered.
Instead, it was given a special "code-color": Red Division.
Over time, Tanner persuaded T'shani to become a member of this elite division of scientists and commandos, pledged with the duty of discovering, understanding, and reverse-engineering enemy weaponry and technology to the SFMC's use. She would become an "embedded" spy for Red Division--secretly studying and acquiring alien technology and secrets while carrying out her "normal" duties. Under this
guise, she was returned to active service and transferred to the U.S.S. Galaxy, a ship that--above all others--seemed to have more than its share of run-ins with strange aliens and their technology.
The Galaxy Years
In November of 2380, T'shani transferred aboard the Starship Galaxy as a member of Major Rex's 104th SFMC (later integrated into the newly formed SFSC) "Vanguard" Squadron. The change was difficult for her in some respects--unlike the Thunderbird, which patrolled many of the Federation core-world sectors, the Galaxy was often assigned on long-distance missions in hostile, border-space territories
near the Romulan and Hydran borders. Out of contact with her friends and loved-ones, she became withdrawn, distant, and cool.
To say Tish had developed an "attitude" was an understatement. In reality, it was her way of compensating for her new assignment; she would often withdraw into herself, focusing only on her training and flying. Her new nickname, "Icequeen", was given for good reason. It wasn't until Tinis met Cassius Henderson, the Galaxy's Executive Officer, that she began to feel life might get back to normal
for her; at least, as normal as it could be on a starship such as the Galaxy. Their friendship was strengthened even more after Henderson rescued her from the botched Red Division mission to recover stolen technology from the Romulans at Rel'Kessan Prime, a mission in which she had to face her arch-enemy, Toluk, again. Although he escaped, Tinis vowed to keep her promise: she would not rest until
Toluk was dead by her blade.
After the Rel'Kessan incident, Tish was temporarily reassigned to Red Division on Special Assignment. Her actions during that time are still classified Top Secret: Level 5. One month later, she was once again back onboard the Galaxy, this time as the new Commanding Officer of the newly-formed SFMC 188th "Furies" Tactical Strategic Specialists Detachment, an experimental highly-specialized rapid-response
commando unit completely autonomous from its Regiment stationed at Starbase 212.
Although she denied it, she also found herself falling in love with Cassius, even though he had moved on in life and was now seeing another woman. Jealous and hurt, Tish did everything she could to try and win Cassius's love, but just ended up making a fool of herself, in the end. Although he was the first man she had loved since Tron, so long ago, she realized that he was already dedicated
to only one love: his career in Starfleet. For awhile she tried to cope, even finding solace and support in her former Vanguard commander, Corran Rex. Though they had a few one-night stands, nothing ever really developed between the two.
Already torn between the two men in her life, as well as trying to command the Furies detachment, Tish put in for transfer. Although she wasn't thrilled about working for Tanner again, she knew that--for now--her talents and skills would be put to use (and challenged) best by re-joining Red Division in November of 2382.
After completing several Top Secret missions for Red Division, T'shani has been temporarily "retired" back to active 'Fleet duty, a standard practice in the Special Services, so that operatives don't get too burned out by a succession of high-intensity missions.
Upon her reassignment in early August 2383, T'shani has attained the rank of Marine Captain (now called Marine "Lieutenant" in some fleets) and is currently serving as the Marine Intelligence Liaison for the SFMC 101st Field Expeditionary Battalion onboard the U.S.S. Miranda. With her Special Ops, Intelligence, Marine, and Starfighter background, T'shani is well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities
that lay ahead of her. |
