Medical Department Breakdown

Medical Emblem
The Medical department maintains ship wide health of the crew. It utilizes Sickbay, the EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram), and medical instruments in order to ensure the wellness crew's physical condition. This department is also in charge of overseeing medicinal allocations and medical advances in surgical procedures. This Department also has Nurses trained in minor Counseling to assist in on-the-fly needs, but due to the size of the Galaxy, the majority of Counselling personnel fall under their own offices.

Hippocratic Oath

In the ancient names of Apollo the physician, and Aesculapius, and by Hygieia and Panaceia his daughters, I swear this oath – though chiefly by the one above Them, Whose Name we do not know.

I swear to fulfil, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I swear to wield my art in such ways, and only such ways, as serve to preserve sentient life in its myriad forms, or to allow such life to depart in dignity;

I shall turn aside from every action, or inaction, which would allow harm to any being, or to allow their life to depart untimely;

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure;

I swear to perform no procedure in which I am unqualified. Nor shall I use my position as a tool in the seduction of any being;

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery;

I will teach this, my art, without fee or stipulation, only though to other disciples bound to it by oath, should they desire to learn it;

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick being, whose illness may affect the person's family as well as them. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick;

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug;

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know;

Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. This awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty;

Above all, I must not play at God;

I ask the Power which hears oaths to hear me swear this one. As long as I keep it and always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling, may I stand rightfully in the respect of my fellow beings and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

"Primum non nocere"

It is a common misconception that the phrase primum non nocere, "First, do no harm" is included in the Hippocratic Oath. It is not, but seems to have been derived indirectly from his Epidemics, in which he wrote, "Declare the past, diagnose the present, foretell the future; practice these acts. As to diseases, make a habit of two things—to help, or at least to do no harm."

Life Sciences
This group of skills includes the study of living things, both terrestrial and alien plants and animals, bacteria, fungi, and other organisms. All Starfleet Officers have some training in one of these sciences, and Science and Medical Officers have training in at least one, with the likelihood of training in more than one extensively.

Botany
Ecology
Exobiology
Genetics
Zoology

Medical Sciences
This broad range of skills includes everything from First Aid to surgery and psychiatry. All Starfleet personnel are qualified in first Aid on themselves and members of their own race; Medical Officers, of course, study further, gaining professional-level skill in several areas of Medical Science.

Equipment

Medical technology and equipment has become increasingly more advanced, since the 20th century. As images become available, the more common medical equipment at the disposal of a 24th century Starfleet medic will be made available here as a link.

There is lot of history encompassed within Star Trek, and we'll try to include as much as possible, but in order to avoid confusion, I'm only going to include the more popular units used in the current timeframe the Galaxy sims in. In some extreme cases, the only images I will be able to find/use will be of an older origin, and creative license is granted within reasonable limits to bring it to a more current level.

Any requests, alterations, and/or submissions can be made to the webmaster at galaxywm@ns4golf.com after having the above request/alteration/submission granted by the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Galaxy. If this has not been done so, the change will not be made.

Enterprise™ and Star Trek: The Original Series™ images and equipment will not be included here.

Medicines

Star Trek has been the popularity juggernaut for almost 40 years now... come to think of it, that's pretty darn amazing. Can you imagine any other genre or program other than James Bond and Doctor Who to survive that long?

Anyhow, enough oohing and aahing. Nothing comes close to the generational popularity of an imaginary future as presented by Star Trek.

There have been so many medicines mentioned over the years, to put them all here would be insane! So, I'm only going to list the more popular ones used over the years. This by no means does it limit the use of the medicines. So long as they are approved by the Chief Medical Officer, feel free to make up others as you see fit. There are also plenty of websites that list others.

I've only put these here to reference for a quick fix.

Stimulants
Burns
Narcotics
Poisons
Restoratives
Pain Relievers
Sedatives
Anesthetics
Cardiacs
Resuscitative
Respiratory

Procedures

There are many procedures both surgical and non-surgical. I've selected a few of the procedures available on the right, but more can be found in the Medical database by selecting the More... link.

Again, these are only procedures mentioned in the Television series episodes. If you feel the need to create a new procedure, just like in reality, you need to go through your boss to get the okay. The Chief Medical Officer gets final say in procedural matters.

Basilar Arterial Scan
Biomolecular Replication
DNA Reference Scan
DNA Resequencing

Conditions and Ailments
There are many common ailments in the Star Trek Universe. Any new diseases, conditions, and/or ailments must be cleared by the Chief Medical Officer if they are potentially contagious to the crew and/or would have an effect on the Galaxy'A's plotlines.

Ba'ltmasor Syndrome
Rigellian Fever
